The night in question
On September 14, 1957, Brazilian columnist Ibrahim Sued received by mail, from an anonymous sender, several fragments of a whitish, light metal accompanied by a letter claiming they came from a flying disc that had exploded over a beach near Ubatuba, in São Paulo state. Sued reproduced the letter in his column and submitted samples for analysis, giving rise to one of ufology's most cited 'physical evidence' files.
The earliest studies —attributed to a Brazilian mineral-production laboratory and later publicized by the U.S. organization APRO— reported the material was magnesium of very high purity, with very few trace elements detectable by the era's spectrography. That purity fed the hypothesis of an exotic technological origin, on the reasoning that in 1957 magnesium so pure would be hard to produce. The case thus became a flagship exhibit for the current arguing that 'recovered material' of non-human origin existed.
The provenance, however, could never be established: there were no identifiable witnesses to the supposed event and no chain of custody, only an anonymous letter. And later analyses —including those carried out or reviewed within the scientific panel convened by physicist Peter Sturrock in the 1990s, and other teams with modern instrumentation— wholly reframed the anomalous claim. The modern review qualified two things. First, the purity, though real, is not by itself anomalous: high-purity magnesium is producible by terrestrial means and in fact already was at the time. Second, the isotopic analysis, which would be the strongest evidence of a non-terrestrial origin, found no significant departures: the small differences detected are consistent with fractionation from heat treatment, not with material from elsewhere in the solar system. Some studies did note striking impurities —strontium, for example— that surprised the analysts, but that does not amount to a conclusive anomalous signature. The modern balance is that the sample is terrestrial magnesium, not proof of exotic technology. It enters the corpus as Tier B for exactly that reason: a historically important physical-evidence case whose anomalous claim did not survive scrutiny, valuable as an example of how a claimed sample is evaluated —and deflated.

Why this case moved the needle
It is one of the most famous 'physical evidence' cases in the Latin American corpus and a test case of method: how a claimed sample goes from 'ultra-pure magnesium of unknown origin' to 'terrestrial magnesium of high but ordinary purity' when modern analyses —isotopic in particular— are applied and a chain of custody is required. Its value lies not in the anomaly, which did not hold, but in the epistemic lesson it distills: without verifiable provenance, not even a tangible material sample concludes anything. An anonymous letter is not a chain of custody, and purity alone is not a signature of non-human origin.
That is why the case is instructive for calibration. It shows that a file's weight is set not by the spectacle of its initial claim ('material from a disc that exploded') but by the robustness of its evidence under sustained scrutiny. Ubatuba was, for decades, the flagship exhibit of the 'recovered material' current; its orderly deflation —real but non-anomalous purity, normal isotopes, unverifiable provenance— is exactly the kind of correction an honest corpus must record. Tier B and low probability reflect that duality: a solid documentary anchor (real lab reports, serious modern review) over a core whose anomalous claim was refuted.
