The 387 that survived

The 1946 'ghost rockets' wave —fast projectile-shaped objects over Scandinavia— began in Finland: the first reports date to February 26, 1946, by Finnish observers. Finland was central to a phenomenon that totaled ~2,000 sightings in the region that year (200 radar-confirmed), with physical fragments recovered and investigated by the authorities. It complements the Swedish case (Försvarsstaben) by anchoring the phenomenon's origin and the Finnish institutional response; honest framing: the most-discussed explanation is Soviet tests of captured missiles, inconclusive.

During 1946 some 2,000 reports of unidentified projectiles were logged over Sweden; after reviewing them, the Swedish Defence Staff (Försvarsstaben) classified 225 cases as 'real physical objects' it could not explain.

Four U.S. Army/Air Force (AAF/USAF) files on the first 'flying disc' wave, declassified in the first PURSUE tranche (May 8, 2026): Air Materiel Command 'General' correspondence from 1946-47 and 1948, a November 1948 air-intelligence report (Netherlands) and the '319.1 Flying Discs 1949' file with incident reports filed under FSR 200-4 regulation, by military and Civil Aviation Authority witnesses. The set documents the institutional onset of the UFO problem —from the Twining memo (1947) to Project Grudge (1949)— in its administrative substrate. A tier-B document-case: a primary record of the process, not evidence of anomaly.

On 23 September 1947, Lieutenant General Nathan Twining sent General Schulgen a classified memorandum stating that "the phenomenon reported is something real and not visionary or fictitious". It is the first documented institutional assertion by a USAF commander that the phenomenon was real — the historical floor of the entire later debate.

From 1947 the Office of Naval Intelligence compiled structured incident summaries over naval air stations — including Muroc, on the same day as the Roswell press release — preserved in National Archives Record Group 38: internal operational documentation, not press statements.

File 62-HQ-83894 is the FBI's central 'flying discs' archive, opened in 1947 and fed through the 1970s with investigative reports, witness testimonies, press clippings and correspondence between the FBI and the Air Forces. PURSUE declassified its serials in the first release; this file embeds in its viewer a sample of Volume 1 (Sections 1-10, subfile SUB A and Serials 130, 153, 164, 220, 403, 438 and 449 (the heaviest sections were split into parts for the viewer)), investigative correspondence from the 1947 wave. The archive contains famous pieces —such as the 1950 Hottel memo on 'three saucers recovered', which the corpus treats separately— but its bulk is fieldwork that resolved most reports into balloons, hoaxes and misidentifications. Its value is institutional: it documents how the U.S. security apparatus processed the flying-disc panic, not that the discs were anomalous.

The 509th Bombardment Group's base issued history's only official military press release claiming recovery of a 'flying disc', retracted within hours as a weather balloon; the official explanation later changed twice more (Mogul 1994, crash-test dummies 1997).

On June 24, 1947, private pilot Kenneth Arnold was flying near Mount Rainier (Washington) when he reported nine bright objects in formation moving at great speed between Rainier and Mount Adams. He timed their passage against the peaks and estimated a speed of about 1,700 km/h, far above any known aircraft of the era. His description of the motion —'like a saucer skipped across water'— led the press to coin the term 'flying saucer.' It is the foundational sighting of the modern era of the phenomenon: the one that triggered the 1947 wave and the vocabulary we still use. Later prosaic explanations (mirages, meteors, birds) never closed it conclusively.

Three volumes (incidents 1-100, 101-172 and 173-233) of U.S. Air Force 'Incident Summaries' —the viewer embeds all three volumes (1-100, 101-172 and 173-233; the latter split into parts due to its size)—, declassified in the first PURSUE tranche (May 8, 2026). Each summary is organized around a standardized form —'Check-List: Unidentified Flying Objects'— with sighting data, and many include witness lists, statements and narrative reports. They are the bureaucratic artifact with which the USAF of Projects Sign (1948) and Grudge (1949) tabulated hundreds of flying-disc reports for systematic evaluation. A tier-B document-case: its value is to show the method —the recording-and-triage machinery that preceded Blue Book— more than any single incident; the bulk resolved into balloons, stars, aircraft and misidentifications.

In June 1947, days before Kenneth Arnold's sighting, Harold Dahl and Fred Crisman claimed to have seen six doughnut-shaped objects over Maury Island (Washington); one supposedly dropped metallic slag that injured his son and killed his dog. Dahl said he was visited by a 'man in black' who warned him to stay quiet. Two intelligence officers died when the B-25 carrying the 'samples' crashed. The FBI rated it a hoax — and Dahl himself admitted he would call it a fraud. It is the foundational case of the 'men in black' myth.

Between 1948 and 1950, 209 sightings of green spheres were logged over the Albuquerque–Los Alamos nuclear corridor, investigated under military sponsorship and acknowledged by AARO in the PURSUE R02 release: the first documented wave over US nuclear infrastructure.

In a 1948 TOP SECRET document, the Project Sign team concluded the interplanetary hypothesis was the most probable explanation of the phenomenon; General Vandenberg rejected the estimate and ordered it destroyed, with no documented scientific rebuttal.

Around 2:45 a.m. on July 24, 1948, Eastern Air Lines pilots Clarence S. Chiles and John B. Whitted saw, from the cockpit of a DC-3 at 5,000 feet near Montgomery (Alabama), a torpedo- or cigar-shaped object —about 30 meters, wingless, with two rows of 'windows' glowing like burning magnesium and an exhaust trail— that passed to their right and climbed away in 10–15 seconds. A passenger saw a flash. The case was among those that led Project Sign investigators to draft the 'Estimate of the Situation' favoring the extraterrestrial hypothesis (later recalled and destroyed). Blue Book's final explanation was a bright meteor; skeptics of the meteor note that the change of direction and structural detail do not fit. A foundational pilot case, genuinely ambiguous.

On October 1, 1948, Air National Guard Lt. George F. Gorman engaged in a roughly 27-minute 'dogfight' over Fargo, pursuing in his F-51 Mustang a small white light that maneuvered faster than his fighter. Confirmed by tower operators and another pilot on the ground; investigated by Project Sign/Blue Book.

Captain Thomas Mantell died when his F-51 crashed after he chased a bright object above the aircraft's safe operational ceiling without oxygen: the first documented US military fatality in pursuit of an unidentified object.

Five documents declassified in PURSUE Release 03 (June 12, 2026) portraying the founding years of the U.S. military study of 'flying discs' (1948-1953): a Navy Report of Flying Discs (Fifth Naval District, Norfolk, Dec 1948), an Army Flying Saucer Study (Army Field Forces, 1949), the USAF 'Analysis of Flying Objects in the United States' in 'Check-List UFO' format (objects 1-172, the Sign/Grudge era), and the 1953 internal transmission of the CIA scientific panel report —the Robertson Panel—, which steered official policy toward public 'debunking'. Its value is institutional and historical: it documents how the postwar security apparatus studied and then framed the phenomenon, not that the objects were anomalous.

The so-called 'other Roswell': the claim that in March 1948 a 99-foot saucer with 16 humanoid bodies crashed near Aztec, New Mexico, and was recovered by the military. Journalist Frank Scully published it in 'Behind the Flying Saucers' (1950). In the mid-1950s it was exposed as a hoax by two con men, Silas Newton and Leo GeBauer.

Successor to Project Sign, Project Grudge (1949–1952) was the U.S. Air Force's second official 'flying saucer' program, with an inverted premise: not to investigate but to debunk. Its 1949 report concluded that sightings were misidentifications, natural phenomena, hysteria or hoaxes, and recommended reducing public interest. It closed discredited after the 1952 wave and was replaced by Project Blue Book. It is the institutional link — and the posture — that later disclosure would cite as the template of state 'debunking'.

Eighteen CIA documents declassified in PURSUE Release 03 (June 12, 2026) portraying the Agency's dual role toward UFOs: steering U.S. policy and collecting foreign intelligence. It includes the Scientific Advisory Panel (Robertson Panel, 1952-53), Project Blue Book Special Report No. 14 (Battelle's statistical analysis), the report on the U-2 and OXCART programs (1954-1974) —which acknowledges that many UFO reports of the era were the CIA's own spy flights—, the 'current status of the UFO project', and the Leon Davidson case; plus a broad collection of intelligence on sightings in the Soviet bloc and abroad (Budapest, Soviet scientists, Sary Shagan, Ladakh/Himalaya, British and Australian activity) and a modern Harare case (2008). Its value is provenance: it documents how the CIA managed and monitored the phenomenon as a counterintelligence matter, not that the objects were anomalous.

Four administrative documents declassified in PURSUE Release 03 (June 12, 2026) showing the 'long tail' of how the U.S. government handled UFO interest over half a century: an FBI correspondence referral (1949), the file of the FBI's Newark field office (1952-1967), the FBI's 'UFO' investigation in Washington State (1952-1960), and a file of correspondence among Congress, the White House and citizens about UFOs (1998). They document no incident or anomalous evidence: they document the bureaucratic processing of the topic —referrals, filing of citizen reports, office responses— across decades. Their value is institutional texture, not probative.

In December 1950, Transport Canada established Project Magnet, an official UFO study program directed by radio engineer Wilbert B. Smith, aimed at investigating the phenomenon and the possibility of harnessing geomagnetism for propulsion. In April 1952 the government also created Project Second Storey, a parallel Defence Research Board committee. Magnet was formally active until 1954. These are among the world's earliest state UFO programs; honest framing: the extraterrestrial conclusions were Smith's personal interpretation, not official policy — the value is the early institutionalization of the subject in a G7 government.

The first official flying-saucer study by a Western government: the Flying Saucer Working Party, set up by the UK Ministry of Defence under Henry Tizard in 1950. Its secret report (1951) concluded all sightings are explained by misidentification, illusion or hoax, and recommended no further investigation. Declassified in 2001.

On May 11, 1950, at a farm near McMinnville (Oregon), Evelyn Trent said she saw a metallic, disc-shaped, slow-moving object approaching; her husband Paul took two photographs that rank among the most analyzed UAP images in history. In 1968, physicist William K. Hartmann studied them for the Condon Report and concluded they were consistent with the testimony: an extraordinary, real object flying at a distance —one of the few cases the committee could not discredit. Later analyses (Sheaffer, IPACO) have argued for a small model hung from a wire. The case remains without an agreed resolution: for some, the best photographic evidence in the U.S. corpus; for others, a skillful domestic hoax.

On August 15, 1950, Nick Mariana, manager of a Great Falls (Montana) baseball team, filmed in 16 mm two silvery objects moving over the stadium — one of the earliest films of an unidentified aerial phenomenon. The USAF (Project Grudge/Blue Book) and the Robertson Panel (CIA, 1953) attributed it to reflections from two F-94 jets; independent analyst Robert Baker concluded the motion and brightness did not fit that explanation and left it unresolved. Mariana maintained the Air Force returned the reel without the first ~35 frames, the sharpest. Tier B: real film, disputed object.

Authentic 1950 FBI memo in which agent Guy Hottel relays to Hoover a hearsay account of three discs and nine bodies recovered in New Mexico. The most-viewed document in the FBI Vault and the archetypal example of a genuine paper with unverifiable content.

On September 10, 1951, during an Army Signal Corps radar demonstration for dignitaries at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, an operator tracked a low-flying target too fast for the AN/MPG-1 set's automatic mode — more than 1,100 km/h; fifteen minutes earlier, two pilots of a T-33 near Sandy Hook had seen a silver object 12-15 meters across moving independently below their aircraft. The radar-and-pilot-visual sequence, occurring before military witnesses, was the direct trigger for the reorganization of Project Grudge into Project Blue Book under Edward Ruppelt.

On 19 February 1951, the crew and seven passengers of an East African Airways flight between Nairobi and Mombasa watched a metallic, bullet-shaped object over 60 metres long hover for 17 minutes above Mount Kilimanjaro before rising and vanishing at about 12,000 m. Nine witnesses signed a sworn affidavit; attempts to photograph it yielded nothing conclusive. A classic aviation case of the 1950-51 wave.

In August and September 1951, over Lubbock (Texas), several Texas Tech College professors observed on repeated nights formations of between 18 and 30 blue-green lights crossing the sky within seconds. On August 30, student Carl Hart Jr. managed five photographs of a 'V' formation that were published in LIFE magazine. Project Blue Book investigated the case; the explanation that ultimately prevailed was prosaic: birds (plovers or ducks) reflecting the city and a drive-in theater's lights. It is a classic Blue Book-era case —qualified witnesses and photos— but with a strong natural candidate; it enters as a calibration anchor.

On the weekends of 19 and 26 July 1952, controllers at Washington National and Andrews AFB tracked unidentified returns over the restricted airspace of the Capitol and the White House, visually confirmed by pilots and chased by F-94 fighters. The episode triggered the largest USAF press conference since the war and catalyzed the Robertson Panel.

Official U.S. Air Force (USAF) program between March 1952 and December 1969, direct successor of Project Sign (1947–1949) and Project Grudge (1949–1952). Operated from the Air Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson AFB (Dayton, Ohio), it archived 12,618 reports; ~701 (5.5%) remained catalogued as 'unidentified' after official investigation. Closed in December 1969 by Air Force Secretary Robert Seamans, based on the 1968 Condon Report (University of Colorado). The Bolender Memo (October 1969) revealed pre-closure that UAP reports with national-security impact 'are not part of the Blue Book system' — documentary confirmation of a parallel classified channel. Archive transferred to NARA Record Group 341.

On the night of August 5-6, 1952, tower controllers at Haneda AFB (Tokyo) observed through binoculars a brilliant light with a dark circular body over the bay; Shiroi GCI radar tracked an unidentified target in the same area, and an F-94 sent to intercept achieved radar lock for about 90 seconds before the target accelerated away. Triple channel — visual, ground radar, airborne radar — and Blue Book's official classification: 'unknown.'

During Operation Mainbrace (September 1952), NATO's largest naval exercise since the war — some 200 ships from nine nations — twelve days accumulated independent military sightings: a triangular object seen from a Danish destroyer, a silver disc over RAF Topcliffe officially reported by RAF personnel, a sphere photographed in sequence from the deck of USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, and a Meteor pilots' pursuit over the North Sea. No file closed with a firm identification.

In March 1952, Commander Edward J. Ruppelt — director of the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) Project Blue Book at Wright-Patterson AFB — gave a 'flying saucer' lecture to scientists at MIT Lincoln Laboratory (a FFRDC founded in 1951 at Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts). The talk was filmed and catalogued as 'AF-ATIC-FILM, 03/52.' The film remained in MIT Lincoln Lab's possession for 74 years. On June 24, 2026, Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) confirmed that MIT Lincoln Lab acknowledged the file's existence and agreed to hand it over to Congress. It is the first known film of an official USAF briefing on UAP/flying saucers to civilian defense contractors, made four months before the Washington D.C. 'Invasion of Washington' of July 1952.

On 29 January 1952, during the Korean War, two USAF B-29 bomber crews on independent missions 80 miles apart reported a nearly identical orange globular object pacing them at close range over North Korea. Project Blue Book classified it "Unknown"; the two independent observations rule out individual error.

On July 2, 1952, U.S. Navy Chief Photographer's Mate Delbert C. Newhouse filmed in 16mm near Tremonton, Utah a group of ~12 bright objects moving in formation. The Navy photographic labs (Anacostia) analyzed the film and concluded they were not aircraft, balloons or birds; the 1953 Robertson Panel reviewed it and attributed it to birds.

On July 14, 1952, Pan American pilots William Nash and William Fortenberry observed from their DC-4, near Norfolk, Virginia, between 6 and 8 bright-red discs flying in formation below their aircraft, which executed an abrupt flip and joined others before departing at high speed. Project Blue Book initially classified it as 'unidentified'.

Battelle, the institute that manages DoE national labs (incl. Oak Ridge), executed under USAF contract the Project Blue Book Special Report 14 (1952–1955) — the largest statistical UAP study of its era, which left ~22% of cases 'unknown', with a higher rate among the best-quality reports. Decades later it reappears in phenomenon material analysis. The contractor-analyst with the longest historical track record.

On the night of September 12, 1952, after seeing a bright light fall over a hill, a group of seven people from Flatwoods (West Virginia) —the May brothers, their mother Kathleen, other children and a National Guardsman— climbed to look for it and described a huge figure with glowing eyes, a hiss and a nauseating smell that made them feel ill. The most accepted explanation —a meteor that night, an aircraft beacon and a perched owl, magnified by fear— is prosaic and well argued. A Tier B case, a folklore icon: multiple witnesses, an object almost certainly mundane.

On December 22, 2010 —two days before Christmas Eve— the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) released twelve volumes, roughly 2,500 pages, of Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) UFO files dating back to 1952: nearly sixty years of reports from civilian witnesses, military personnel and pilots, including the material documenting the famous 1978 'Kaikōura Lights' (see [[kaikoura-1978]]). The release came after two years of lobbying by researcher Suzanne Hansen, director of UFOCUS NZ, via an Official Information Act request. It was, at once, the largest UFO declassification by an Oceania country and a textbook case of the limits of a 'complete' release: it only covered the Air Force —the Navy and Army kept their own records classified—, with privacy embargoes running until 2050 and entire pages illegible due to redaction.

On 17 October 1952, many residents of Oloron-Sainte-Marie (southwest France) described a tilted cylinder preceded by about 30 'red spheres with a ring' moving in zigzagging pairs, while a white filamentous substance —'angel hair'— fell on wires and roofs and vanished when touched. Ten days later it recurred almost identically in Gaillac.

In June 1952, a German newspaper reported that Norwegian fighters had found a crashed saucer on the Arctic island of Spitsbergen: a disc with jets around the rim to spin it, bearing 'Russian' inscriptions. The story, later embellished with alien crew, spread throughout the Cold War. The Norwegian Ministry of Defence never had any record; researchers consider it a journalistic hoax.

A five-scientist panel convened by the CIA in 1953 recommended in writing a 'debunking' program and the monitoring of civilian groups to reduce public interest in UFOs: the discrediting policy is prescribed on paper, not inferred.

On the night of August 5-6, 1953, a luminous object over Rapid City, South Dakota, was observed simultaneously by a Ground Observer Corps volunteer, by GCI radar operators at Ellsworth AFB, and by two F-84 jets sent to intercept it: one chased it more than 190 km into North Dakota before breaking off for fuel, with solid radar blips correlated to the visual contact. Edward Ruppelt, first head of Project Blue Book, described it as 'the best UFO report in the Air Force files.' Quadruple channel — ground visual, air visual, ground radar, airborne radar — and an 'unknown' classification.

On November 23, 1953, an F-89C Scorpion fighter took off from Kinross AFB to intercept an unidentified radar return over Lake Superior. Ground radar showed the aircraft and the target merge into a single blip — and the F-89, with Lt. Felix Moncla and radar operator Robert Wilson, vanished without a trace. Neither the aircraft nor the bodies were ever found.

On June 29–30, 1954, BOAC's Boeing Stratocruiser 'Centaurus', with Captain James Howard —a former RAF squadron leader— in command, was escorted for about 18 minutes and ~130 km over Labrador by a large dark object that changed shape, trailed by six or seven smaller objects in formation. All 11 crew and some of the 51 passengers saw it; it was reportedly tracked on radar at the USAF Cartwright station, and a fighter was reported scrambled from Goose Bay. On the ground, USAF intelligence interviewed the crew. A Tier A case: multiple professional witnesses, object with no firm explanation.

On October 27, 1954, during a Fiorentina football match, ~10,000 people at the Stadio Artemio Franchi saw objects over the stadium and the game stopped. A filamentous substance ('angel hair') fell, which Professor Giovanni Canneri (University of Florence) analyzed by spectrography: boron, silicon, calcium and magnesium, non-radioactive. A mass sighting with named witnesses (players, press, police) and a physical sample with university analysis — though with an open skeptical debate (Italian Air Force chaff exercises that day).

In the early hours of August 23, 1954, in Vernon (Normandy, over the Seine), industrialist Bernard Miserey and other witnesses —including a gendarme— said they saw a huge vertical cigar-shaped object, perhaps a hundred meters, hovering in the sky, from which several smaller luminous discs descended and moved off separately. It is one of the emblematic 'mother ship' cases of the great French wave of 1954, documented by ufologist Aimé Michel. Tier B: multiple night witnesses, no physical evidence, in the middle of a national wave.

On September 10, 1954, during that year's great French wave, metalworker Marius Dewilde reported a dark object resting on the railway tracks near Quarouble and two small figures; he said he was paralyzed by a beam. The Gendarmerie Nationale investigated and documented physical marks: depressions in the wooden sleepers consistent with great weight.

A 1954 file (code E5465B) of the Swiss Air Force Intelligence Service contains directives for pilots and officials to report UFO sightings systematically. Observation forms in three languages were developed —position, direction, elevation, size, shape, apparent propulsion, speed— which former army pilots confirm were used until the 1990s. Most of those documents were destroyed. Switzerland's first record: the value is the institutional reporting infrastructure, not an anomalous case, in a neutral country.

On 16 August 1954, over the capital of Madagascar — then Tananarive, a French colony — tens of thousands of people watched a large green metallic-looking sphere pass at low altitude, followed by an identical second object. Witnesses described an electrical blackout as it passed and the stampede of zebu herds. The base commander, General Fleurquin, ordered an investigation led by the observatory director, who questioned more than 5,000 witnesses. It is one of the best-attested mass sightings of the period.

In the early morning of 29 November 1954, in Petare (east of Caracas), two merchandise-transport workers —Gustavo González and José Ponce— recounted finding a luminous spherical object hovering in the middle of the street and hairy figures about one meter tall. González said he wrestled with one of them, which threw him several meters and left him with scratches. It drew attention because there was police intervention and a prosecutor's record that the witnesses were not intoxicated or deranged. It is one of the most cited humanoid encounters of early Latin American ufology.

On 1 November 1954, the Tuscan peasant Rosa Lotti said she found in a clearing at Cennina an object shaped like a spindle or double cone, of polished metal and with a small glass door. From it emerged two beings a little over a metre tall, dressed like pilots, who took some carnations and a stocking from her. The case is one of the most famous of the great Italian wave of 1954.

Document 341_110677 (PURSUE Release 01) contains Air Intelligence Information Report IR 193-55, signed on October 14, 1955 by U.S. air attaché Lt. Col. Thomas S. Ryan. It records the account of three 'highly reliable' U.S. observers who, traveling by rail through the Trans-Caucasus (between Aliaty and Adzhijabul, south of Baku) on October 4, 1955 at 19:10, saw two disc-shaped objects ascend almost vertically —with the outer surface revolving slowly to the right— to about 6,000 feet, at which point they sharply accelerated northward. The take-off area, 1-2 miles south of the line, showed two searchlight beams pointing almost vertically. The attaché assessed it as significant for the USAF's UFO project. What the document doesn't say —and a separate CIA memo (CIA-UAP-D020, declassified in PURSUE Release 04) does reveal— is the identity of those 'three observers': Senator Richard Russell, then chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee; his military aide, the same Lt. Col. E. U. Hathaway cited as the report's source; and interpreter Ruben Efron. The case stayed classified for thirty years.

On the night of 21 August 1955, the Sutton and Taylor families —eleven people— said they were besieged for hours at a farmhouse near Hopkinsville, Kentucky, by several small creatures with large heads and bright eyes that approached the house. They fired at them with no apparent effect and fled to the police station in terror. Police and state troopers investigated: they found no traces or landing marks, but did find bullet holes and shell casings. It is the most cited multi-witness encounter of its era and the origin of the phrase 'little green men'.

Three USAF bases in England simultaneously tracked returns at 2,000–4,000 mph; an RAF Venom achieved radar lock and the object reversed the tactical position onto its tail. The Condon Committee called it genuinely puzzling.

On 17 July 1957, a USAF RB-47 reconnaissance aircraft detected a radar signal correlated with a visible light over the Gulf of Mexico via three independent ELINT receivers, ground radar and visual observation, all appearing and vanishing in sync for 90 minutes across 1,100 km. The Condon Report classified it as unexplained.

Within three hours, fifteen independent drivers around Levelland, Texas reported an oval object that killed engines and headlights on approach, with systems recovering as it left; sheriff Weir Clem confirmed it at the scene. The first documented mass electromagnetic-interference event.

On the night of May 20, 1957, USAF Lieutenant Milton Torres scrambled from RAF Manston (Kent) in an F-86D with orders to fire a full salvo of 24 rockets at a stationary radar target over East Anglia that ground control had been tracking for some time. Torres locked on at 24 km to an echo 'with the proportions of a flying aircraft carrier'; before he could fire, the object moved at a speed he estimated at Mach 10 and vanished from radar. It is a typical tier-B incident case from the flow of citizen sightings the FBI channeled to the Air Force: a single witness, a structured description but no instrumental corroboration, and the routine administrative referral. Its value is documentary —how a report was processed— more than probative.

Before dawn on September 24, 1959, police officer Robert Dickerson saw a bright object descend over Redmond, Oregon, and hover at about 60 meters, with the treetops lit up. He alerted the FAA office at the airport; the controllers observed it and the Klamath Falls GCI radar tracked it, after which six F-102 fighters were scrambled and a B-47 and an F-89 on routine flights joined the pursuit. Radar followed the object for about two hours, with altitude changes between 1,500 and 15,800 meters. The Air Force wavered between 'Venus,' 'a balloon' and 'insufficient data.'

On the nights of 26 and 27 June 1959, at the Anglican mission of Boianai (Papua New Guinea), the Reverend William Booth Gill and some three dozen people —including teachers and a medical assistant— observed a large disc-shaped craft with humanoid figures on its upper part. Document 59_214434 (PURSUE Release 01) is a memorandum of July 18, 1963 from the National Aeronautics and Space Council —the White House's space advisory body, within the Executive Office of the President—, signed by Maxwell W. Hunter and addressed to Robert F. Packard of the State Department's Office of International Scientific Affairs. Titled 'Thoughts on the Space Alien Race Question', it reflects on the policy question of 'what to do if an alien intelligence is discovered in space', a topic that arose during the BNSP Task I deliberations. The author lays out the scientific shift —from believing life improbable to considering it probable among the stars—, discusses the Martian 'Canali' and Project Ozma, and speculates, with humor, about Martians mining the Moon and about 'hints' of life on the satellite. It is a rare record of how the U.S. executive apparatus thought about the contact contingency two decades before formal post-detection protocols.

On the night of 21 October 1963, the Moreno family reported several luminous objects at their farm in Trancas (Tucumán): one settled near the house, by the railway tracks, for about 45 minutes, while others lined up in the distance. A beam of light was directed at the house, and a residue was collected from the site. It is one of the most famous Argentine cases for the number of witnesses and for having a laboratory analysis of the residue (mostly calcium carbonate). On 24 April 1964, police officer Lonnie Zamora broke off a chase to investigate a white egg-shaped object resting on legs, with two small figures nearby, outside Socorro, New Mexico. Project Blue Book classified it "Unknown", with landing marks and scorched vegetation verified on site by Hynek, who cited it as the case that changed his stance.

On the night of 4 September 1964, bow hunter Donald Shrum, separated from his group at Cisco Grove (California), climbed a tree and said he was besieged for hours by two humanoid beings and a red-eyed 'robot' that exhaled a vapor that knocked him unconscious. He defended himself with arrows and fire. A lost companion saw the same object; the case was investigated by Project Blue Book.

In September 1964, according to the testimony of then Air Force lieutenant Robert Jacobs, an optical tracking station at Big Sur (California) filmed the test flight of an Atlas missile launched from Vandenberg base with a dummy warhead. On reviewing the film days later, Jacobs says a disc-shaped object was seen approaching the warhead in suborbital flight and firing four beams of light at it from different angles, after which the warhead became destabilized. In the early hours of October 7, 1965, controllers and air police at Edwards AFB — the USAF's flight test center — reported up to a dozen lights changing color and moving erratically over the base; there were radar returns and an F-106 interceptor was scrambled. Everything was recorded: hours of tapes of the communications among the tower, the air defense sector and the operators, later released to the public. Its climax was social, not aerial: on 1 October 1965, around 20,000 people gathered at the Ángel de la Independencia awaiting a 'parade' of interplanetary craft announced in the press. Nothing appeared. It is the corpus's case study of how a wave is manufactured by media and expectation, with a public prediction that failed in front of thousands.

Some 300 students and teachers at Westall High School in Melbourne watched a silver object land in daylight on an adjacent paddock, leave a circle in the grass and depart — pursued, according to witnesses, by RAAF aircraft; the subsequent administrative suppression was documented by the education department.

Pine Gap Joint Defence Facility, a joint Australia–U.S. intelligence base established in 1966 under the code name 'Rainfall', initially presented as a space research site and later one of the most important satellite nodes of the 5-Eyes alliance. It is the Australian structural equivalent of major U.S. classified programs: signed bilateral agreement, continuous budget, written mandate and sustained institutional recognition over six decades. Before dawn on April 17, 1966, officers Dale Spaur and Wilbur Neff chased a luminous object with a downward light beam from Portage County (Ohio) to Conway (Pennsylvania): about 138 km across two states, with two more officers joining. Major Hector Quintanilla's Project Blue Book dispatched it as the Echo satellite and then Venus, after a two-minute phone call; it took congressional pressure for him to travel and interview them. J. Allen Hynek recorded the handling. Multiple police witnesses, poor institutional handling: Tier A.

On January 19, 1966, rural worker George Pedley (28) reported observing a metallic disc roughly 7.5m wide rising from Horseshoe Lagoon near Tully, Queensland. At the site he found a circular depression of about 9m of flattened reeds he called a 'nest'. Five additional nests were later found. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) conducted an official investigation — the first sample-analysis investigation in Australia. The RAAF conclusion was that the reeds died 'from natural submersion'; the University of Queensland attributed the patterns to 'severe turbulence' compatible with regional line squalls. The case is the first 'crop-circle' paradigm with documented official military investigation, a chronological parallel of Westall (same year, different modus).

Between January and October 1966, police, municipal officials and hundreds of residents of Wanaque (New Jersey) reported luminous objects over the state's largest reservoir. On 11 January, a bright, silent object spent about two and a half hours beaming light onto the ice; police received over 150 calls. The mayor and councilmen came to see it.

On 20 August 1966, two Brazilian electronics technicians, Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz, were found dead on the slope of Morro do Vintém (Niterói), in suits, with raincoats and lead masks over their eyes, with no signs of violence. A note read 'ingest capsules... protect metals, wait for the signal'. The case, tied to spiritualism and 'lights' in the sky, remains unsolved.

Between November 1966 and December 1967, residents of Point Pleasant (West Virginia) reported a large winged creature with red eyes near the former 'TNT Area' explosives site. On 15 December 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed, killing 46 people; the temporal coincidence fused both events into the 'Mothman' legend.

On 4 October 1967, several Shag Harbour (Nova Scotia) residents saw a four-light object fall into the sea; the RCMP confirmed yellow foam and a lingering slick within minutes. Maritime Command ordered a three-day underwater search by the Fleet Diving Unit, and the government released the records without dispute.

Prospector Stefan Michalak suffered hospital-documented geometric-pattern burns after touching an object that had landed near Falcon Lake, Manitoba; the RCMP and RCAF investigated officially and elevated radioactivity was measured at the site.

All ten Minuteman ICBMs at Malmstrom AFB's Oscar-Flight Launch Control Center simultaneously went off-alert while security reported a luminous object over the bunker; the USAF logged it as 'cause undetermined' and Captain Salas testified publicly.

In the early hours of December 3, 1967, 22-year-old police officer Herbert Schirmer reported an oval object hovering over Highway 6 near Ashland, Nebraska, and immediately noticed a red mark under his ear and unaccounted-for minutes on his shift. The case reached the University of Colorado's Condon Committee, which in 1968 had Schirmer hypnotized by psychologist Leo Sprinkle (University of Wyoming) and polygraphed — he passed. Under hypnosis he described pale grey-skinned occupants with slanted eyes —the grey archetype, not reptilian despite a winged-serpent emblem on their uniforms— and a warning of two future visits. The Condon Committee itself labeled the case 'psychological'.

On 29 August 1967, in Cussac (Cantal, France), two shepherd children —François Delpeuch, 13, and his sister Anne-Marie, 9— said they saw a bright sphere about two meters across and four small, completely black figures near the ground, which rose into the object before it took off with a whistle. The gendarmerie opened an investigation that same day and noted a persistent sulfurous odor and dried grass at the spot. Years later GEPAN —the official French agency— reviewed the case and classified it as 'worthy of further study'.

According to an account attributed to a former U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) analyst, in March 1967 two MiG-21s of the Cuban Air Force were sent to intercept an unidentified object; one was supposedly destroyed in mid-air as it prepared to fire, and the loss was logged as 'equipment malfunction'. The story, collected by NICAP, rests on a single source and the NSA never confirmed it. It is Cuba's case in the corpus — and an example of the fragility of single-source accounts.

A document declassified in PURSUE's fourth drop (July 10, 2026) bundles two unrelated pieces of FBI correspondence, connected only by topic: a 1967 note summarizing, in one paragraph, an eleven-year-old child's report of a 'weird' noise and a 'flash of light'; and a 1974 exchange of letters between the FBI and Larry W. Bryant —a pro-disclosure UFO activist who would later sue the Pentagon— about an alleged 1954 sighting of an 'occupied UFO.' The Bureau's reply to Bryant is the central piece: it has no record of the event he's asking about, and by 1974 it no longer collects UFO sighting information at all.

Before dawn on 24 October 1968, an object interacted simultaneously with an airborne B-52 —whose UHF comms failed and which was captured on radarscope film— and with security personnel at Minuteman missile silos at Minot AFB. It joins two corpus patterns: airborne electromagnetic interference and nuclear-infrastructure surveillance.

On the morning of August 18, 1968, Emil Barnea — a construction technician and former Romanian army officer — and his companion Zamfira Matea saw, in a clearing of the Hoia-Baciu forest near Cluj, a round object of metallic appearance shining in the sun above the treetops. Barnea managed to take four photographs as the object advanced, brightened, and then accelerated out of sight. Technicians at the University of Cluj studied the plates and built scale models; ufologist Ion Hobana investigated the witnesses. It is one of the most analyzed photographic cases of the Eastern Bloc, taken three days before the invasion of Czechoslovakia.

'Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects' (1968), led by physicist Edward Condon at the University of Colorado with USAF funding. Its conclusion —that studying UFOs offers no scientific value— closed Project Blue Book in 1969. But its credibility was damaged: the 'Low memo' revealed a design bias, and roughly a third of cases remained unexplained despite the conclusion.

In November 1968, a French physician (anonymized as 'Dr. X') saw from his window two luminous disks that merged into one and emitted a beam. After the encounter an axe wound and an old war injury vanished, and weeks later a triangular rash appeared on him and on his fourteen-month-old son. On 7 August 1968, two employees of a camp on Lake Champlain (Vermont), Michael Lapp (16) and Janet Cornell (19), saw a light that split into smaller ones 'like pearls'; they woke on the dock with a 'lost' hour. Ten years later, investigator Walter Webb reconstructed under hypnosis two abduction accounts that matched each other.

Through the spring of 1968 U.S. Marines reported hovering night-time lights over the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone and the sea off Tiger Island; on the night of 15-16 June some 30 slow lights triggered an incursion alarm. The Allied response degenerated into friendly fire: F-4 Phantom fighters sank the swift boat PCF-19 and struck the cruisers USS Boston and HMAS Hobart, with fatalities. Internal memo by General Bolender (USAF, 1969) stating that UFO reports affecting national security are filed under JANAP 146 and AFM 55-11, outside the Blue Book system — documentary confirmation of a parallel channel that outlived the public program's closure.

MUFON (Mutual UFO Network) is the largest and longest-running civilian UAP reporting and investigation network. Founded on May 31, 1969 as the Midwest UFO Network in Quincy, Illinois —a direct response to the closure of Project Blue Book that same year— it operates with some 4,000 members, more than 700 trained field investigators with their own manual, and since 2006 maintains the Case Management System (CMS), a public repository that surpassed 100,000 reports by 2024. It is the civilian infrastructure that filled the institutional vacuum left by the state. But its rigor is the subject of documented criticism: funding and entanglement with Bigelow Aerospace, and a focus scientists deem pseudoscientific (abduction, hypnotic regression, hybrids). It enters the corpus as a large-scale reporting institution with contested methodological credibility.

Apollo 11's Technical Crew Debriefing (Jul 31, 1969), declassified in the first PURSUE tranche (May 8, 2026, designation NASA-UAP-D4), records observations by Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin during the translunar coast and the return: an object of noticeable size about a day from the Moon, 'little flashes' inside the cabin while trying to sleep, and a 'fairly bright light source' on the way back described as a 'possible laser'. May 2026 coverage amplified it as 'Apollo 11 UFOs', but the content points elsewhere: the object is most likely one of the rocket's own SLA adapter panels, and the flashes are the known cosmic-ray light-flash phenomenon. Audio from the Apollo 12 post-mission medical debrief (1969), declassified in the second PURSUE tranche (May 22, 2026): astronauts Conrad, Gordon and Bean describe 'streaks/flashes of light' they saw while trying to sleep in deep space. Science explains it well as cosmic rays interacting with the retina — a case included for documentary transparency, not for anomaly.

On January 7, 1970, two Finnish skiers —Aarno Heinonen and Esko Viljo— said they encountered in a snowy clearing near Imjärvi an object about 3 meters across wrapped in reddish mist, from which a small figure with a black box of pulsating light descended on a light beam. Heinonen was left as if paralyzed and, in the following days, suffered numbness, vomiting and dark urine. The case was investigated by Finnish ufologists and Flying Saucer Review; its credibility was eroded by the dozens of later sightings Heinonen claimed. Tier B: two witnesses and physical effects, testimonial anchor.

A wave of tiny-humanoid sightings —only a few centimetres tall— reported mostly by schoolchildren across peninsular Malaysia between 1970 and 1979. Over three days in August 1970 a press count logged no fewer than 39 tiny UFOs and 31 reports of three-inch occupants. Catalogued by Ahmad Jamaludin (Flying Saucer Review; CUFOS, 1981).

The photograph had circulated for decades in amateur catalogs, but the 2026 shift was institutional: within the Department of War's PURSUE release, AARO cataloged it as case NASA-UAP-VM6 and assessed it with unusually direct language —'potentially the result of a physical object in the scene'—, retrieving the original film for reanalysis. The skeptical explanations (ice, paint flaking, optical artifact) remain the most likely.

On 18 October 1973, an Army Reserve Bell UH-1H over Mansfield, Ohio, nearly collided with a gray cigar-shaped object; though the crew held the controls in a descent, the helicopter climbed with no pilot input. The Army's official after-action report remains on file, unreclassified.

Nicknamed the 'Welsh Roswell', it is a model case of how two simultaneous natural events spawn a cover-up retrieval legend.

On 27 March 1974, the Betz family found in Florida a metal sphere the size of a bowling ball —about 20 cm and 10 kg— that, they said, rolled on its own, changed direction and 'vibrated' with music. The press turned it into an enigma. Analysis revealed high-quality stainless steel; the Navy identified it as a large industrial ball/valve, and the 'movement' as the effect of an uneven floor.

On 5 November 1975, Travis Walton and six fellow members of a forestry crew in Arizona saw a glowing disc-shaped object; by the convergent testimony of all six, Walton approached it and vanished for five days. The seven reported the event to the sheriff before the outcome was known, five passed polygraphs, and an institutional search by the Forest Service and USAF is documented.

On 3 May 1975, 23-year-old Mexican pilot Carlos Antonio de los Santos flew from Zihuatanejo to Mexico City in his Piper PA-24 and reported three disk-shaped objects that surrounded his aircraft and forced an ascent he felt was beyond his control, until he issued a 'Mayday'. Before dawn on 19 September 1976, two Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantoms tried to intercept a luminous object over Tehran; both lost communications and weapons systems on approach, recovering them as they pulled away. On the night of September 18-19, 1976, around 01:00-01:30, a luminous object was reported almost simultaneously from Agadir, Casablanca, Rabat, Kenitra, Marrakech, Essaouira, Meknes and Fez: a silvery circular shape trailing sparks and fragments, silent, on a SW→NE course. One of them, José María Trejo, described a humanoid figure some three meters tall formed by points of green light, with long arms and no hands or feet, before losing consciousness; his companions opened fire on the apparition, which vanished. In August 1976, four art students —twins Jack and Jim Weiner, Charlie Foltz and Chuck Rak— were camping at Eagle Lake, in Maine's Allagash wilderness. They reported a large luminous sphere, a beam of light and a missing-time episode; years later, under fifteen hypnosis sessions, the four separately described an abduction and an examination. On 21 October 1978, the 20-year-old Australian pilot Frederick Valentich disappeared in a Cessna 182 over Bass Strait, en route to King Island. Minutes earlier he told Melbourne control that an aircraft was passing over him at about 300 m, with four bright lights, that 'it is not an aircraft' and that his engine was failing; after a metallic sound, the communication cut off. On September 9, 1991, the British tabloid ''Today'' published the confession of two men from Southampton, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley, who claimed to have created circles in the crop fields of southern England since 1978. Their tool was trivial: a wooden plank tied with a rope, plus a cap with a wire sight to walk in a straight line. Inspired by the Tully ''saucer nests'' (Australia, 1966), they wanted to simulate the landing of a UFO. They demonstrated the method to journalists and, before revealing the trick, got the cerealogist Pat Delgado to declare one of their circles ''genuine''. The confession deflated much of the simple crop-circle phenomenon and established the copycat pattern that followed. It is the corpus's documented, confessed hoax par excellence.

A TAE Supercaravelle declares an in-flight emergency over Valencia, harassed by unidentified lights; Torrejón military radar confirms the objects and a Mirage F-1 fails three interception attempts. File declassified by the Spanish Air Force (1992–1995).

On 18 June 1979, vectored by Istrana's military radar, Warrant Officer Giancarlo Cecconi chased an unidentified object in a Fiat G-91R and recorded 82 frames with the aircraft's VINTEN gun camera. The originals are preserved in the Aeronautica Militare archive — likely the best military visual evidence in the European corpus.

On September 20, 1979, students and academics at Wuhan University established the 'China UFO Enthusiasts' Liaison Office' — the first organized Chinese structure dedicated to the study of the UAP phenomenon. In May 1980 it was rebranded as the 'China UFO Research Association' and in February 1981 it began publishing the 'Journal of UFO Research'. The Chinese National Academy of Social Sciences provided moderate institutional support. Its most internationally visible president was Sun Shi Li, a former Chinese diplomat in Mexico and Beijing professor. On 7 August 1979, the Uruguayan Air Force created CRIDOVNI, an official commission under the Ministry of Defense that investigates reports using military assets —radar, controllers— and classifies them. On November 9, 1979, forester Robert 'Bob' Taylor was walking on Dechmont Law, near Livingston (Scotland), when he said he found in a clearing a 'flying dome' about 6 meters across and two spiked spheres that rolled toward him, grabbed his trousers and dragged him before he lost consciousness. He returned home with torn clothes and grazes to his chin and thighs. Around 1:40 a.m. on August 27, 1979, Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson was driving on Marshall County Highway 220 (Minnesota) when an intense light rushed at his patrol car; he lost consciousness. When he came to, the windshield was cracked, a headlight and the emergency light damaged and the antenna bent; in addition, both his wristwatch and the car's clock had fallen 14 minutes behind, and he had welding-like eye irritation. The sheriff documented the damage and the vehicle is preserved today in a county museum. It is one of the few cases with measurable physical damage to an object (the car) and a police witness, though with a single observer and doubts about the mechanics of the damage.

In early 1979, at Soesterberg air base —partly used by U.S. forces during the Cold War— a dozen or more military personnel and control-tower staff reported an object hovering over one of the runways. The number and character of the witnesses forced one of the few occasions on which Dutch authorities felt they had to give an official answer. The Netherlands' first case: multiple military witnesses + control tower at an active base.

Geological engineer Phil Schneider claimed in lectures (1995–96) to have survived a 1979 firefight against non-human beings in an underground base beneath Dulce (New Mexico), with ~60 dead. On April 11, 1980, at La Joya Air Base (Arequipa, Peru), Peruvian Air Force lieutenant Óscar Santa María Huertas scrambled in a Sukhoi Su-22 fighter to intercept an object the base initially took for a spy balloon. Santa María is the only documented pilot to have fired at an unidentified object.

On November 28, 1980, around 5 a.m., police constable Alan Godfrey was patrolling Todmorden (West Yorkshire) searching for stray cows when he reported a large object, diamond-shaped with a rotating base, hovering over the road, which left the asphalt dry and swirled despite the rain. Godfrey, an on-duty officer, made a sketch and filed an official report; he also described a memory gap. A later hypnotic regression —of low reliability— recovered an abduction narrative. Federal investigation of cattle mutilations commissioned in 1979 by Senator Harrison Schmitt (New Mexico) under rural political pressure, funded by a DOJ Law Enforcement Assistance Administration grant and executed by former FBI agent Kenneth Rommel from the 1st Judicial District Attorney's office. The final report (June 1980, 297 pages) examined 15 NM cases with formal veterinary necropsies and field work, and concluded the pattern is explained by death from natural causes followed by predation and decomposition. It found no evidence of surgical instruments, covert helicopters, cults, or anomalous intervention. It is the strongest institutional document in the corpus for the natural-phenomena hypothesis on mutilations.

An ovoid object set down for 30 seconds on a plot in Trans-en-Provence; GEPAN (CNES) and the INRA agricultural institute documented biochemical damage to the vegetation under Gendarmerie chain of custody: the model case of state scientific investigation of a UAP event.

Norway's Hessdalen valley has produced recurring anomalous lights since 1981 and is the only UAP phenomenon under continuous instrumented scientific monitoring for over four decades, with an automated measurement station and peer-reviewed publications.

On May 5, 1981, around 18:00 Moscow time, cosmonaut Vladimir Kovalyonok —Major General, twice Hero of the Soviet Union— observed from a porthole of the Salyut-6 station an object flying alongside the spacecraft over southern Africa. Initially elliptical like a 'barbell', the object became translucent revealing an internal structure and then showed a gas-like emission at one end before disappearing. Kovalyonok called his crewmate Viktor Savinykh, who also observed it. No rocket or missile test compatible with that day was recorded. It is the corpus case with the highest possible witness cohort (two cosmonauts on duty) within the Soviet space program.

On the night of July 24, 1981, roughly between 10:33 and 10:53 p.m., hundreds of thousands of people across 14 Chinese provinces observed an enormous luminous spiral expanding in the sky — possibly the most-witnessed unidentified aerial event in history. Planetary astronomer Wang Sichao, of the Purple Mountain Observatory (Chinese Academy of Sciences), studied it for years and estimated an altitude of about 650 km and a speed of ~1.6 km/s. Those parameters, together with the spiral morphology, point to the known prosaic mechanism: a rocket or satellite upper stage venting fuel in the upper atmosphere — the same phenomenon that produced the 2009 Norway spiral and the Chinese spirals confirmed as launches in 2013 and 2025. It belongs in the corpus as a calibration anchor: the most-witnessed event is not the most anomalous.

On October 4, 1982, over a Strategic Rocket Forces base near Byelokoroviche (Ukrainian SSR), military personnel reported a disc-shaped object stationary for about an hour, with radio interference. During the event, per the Soviet investigation, the missiles' launch-control panels began a pre-launch sequence on their own for about 15 seconds, with no command, then reset. It is the Soviet parallel to Malmstrom 1967.

Between 1983 and 1986, some 5,000 people across the Hudson Valley (New York and Connecticut) reported a large, silent triangular object with structured lights —the "Westchester Boomerang"— among them IBM engineers, state police and FAA controllers. It is the most-witnessed sustained UAP event in the U.S., cited without dispute by NICAP, CUFOS and MUFON.

The 'Molebka anomalous zone' or 'Perm Triangle', in the Russian Urals, became famous after 1983, when geologist Emil Bachurin said he saw a luminous sphere and found a ~62 m circular print in the snow. In the 1980s-90s it drew expeditions reporting lights, equipment failures and 'mirages'. It is the most famous anomalous zone of the former USSR, on a site already sacred to the Mansi.

On September 7, 1984, the crew of an Aeroflot Tu-134 en route Tbilisi–Tallinn observed over Minsk a luminous object emitting light beams and changing shape; air traffic control reported a 'double' radar return. The Trud newspaper published it in January 1985 ('At 4:10 Sharp'), making it the most famous Soviet case. The leading explanation is a launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome.

From the mid-1980s, a group of Chilean radio amateurs reported receiving shortwave transmissions from a community identifying itself as 'Friendship'. Its main promoter, Santiago businessman Ernesto de la Fuente, claimed he had been healed of a lung disease by its members. The account described a pacifist community with advanced technology operating from a secret location in southern Chile, associated with a long white vessel photographed in Patagonia. The case, a media phenomenon in Chile in the 1990s (television and press), never produced verifiable evidence of the community or the vessel, and is classified as contactee.

The 'Operation Majestic-12' set is the most famous UFO document series and the most thoroughly studied as a forgery. Surfacing between 1984 and 1987 in the hands of ufologists William Moore, Jaime Shandera and Stanton Friedman, the documents describe a secret committee of twelve senior officials (MJ-12) that Truman allegedly created in 1947 to manage crashed UFOs and recovered bodies (Roswell/Aztec). In 1988 two FBI offices received copies of the memo; the Bureau consulted the Air Force (AFOSI), which replied that the documents were 'completely bogus'. The FBI file —available in its reading room, The Vault, under 'Unexplained Phenomenon'— documents that verdict. Document examiners found signatures traced from other letters, anachronistic date formats and inconsistent typography. Its value to the corpus is calibration: it is the document-case that teaches how a 'leaked document' is fabricated and dismantled.

Document DOS-UAP-D1, declassified in the first PURSUE release, is a diplomatic cable dated January 28, 1985 from the U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby to the Indo-Pacific Command (USCINCPAC). Papua New Guinea's intelligence service had asked the embassy about reports from the night of January 24: fast-moving objects with lights, contrails and noise. The report the NIO gave some credence to came from an Air Niugini pilot who, having just taken off from Wewak, detected by radar high-altitude, high-speed traffic over Angoram; ground witnesses reported contrails of one aircraft north-to-south at 19:00 and of six to eight aircraft south-to-north at 22:00. The embassy replied that it had no record of B-52 overflights or U.S. aircraft in PNG airspace that day, called the information 'very sketchy', and requested confirmation from USCINCPAC.

On the night of 26 December 1985, writer Whitley Strieber recounted waking paralyzed in his upstate New York cabin and being led away by small beings with large black eyes. He told it in 'Communion' (1987), the bestseller that defined the modern image of the 'grey' and the abduction experience. Journalist Ed Conroy investigated the case. Skeptics attribute it to sleep paralysis / hypnagogia; there is no physical evidence.

On 17 November 1986, the crew of Japan Airlines cargo flight 1628 tracked two luminous objects over Alaska for some 50 minutes, plus a third described as "twice the size of an aircraft carrier". FAA radar at Anchorage correlated the contacts, and the agency officially logged the event as "unidentified".

On the night of 19 May 1986, the radars of CINDACTA I (Brasília) detected some 21 unidentified objects over the airspace of São Paulo, Rio and Goiás. The FAB scrambled five supersonic fighters (F-5 and Mirage) from Santa Cruz (Rio) and Anápolis (Goiás); the pilots had radar and visual contacts with objects that evaded and accelerated to extreme speeds. Days later, the Minister of Aeronautics, Brigadier Octávio Moreira Lima, confirmed the episode in a press conference alongside the pilots, admitting there was no conclusive technical explanation. It is one of the best-documented military UAP cases in the world.

On 29 January 1986, a car-sized metallic sphere descended in a controlled trajectory and crashed into 'Height 611' near Dalnegorsk, in the Soviet Far East; the USSR Academy of Sciences analyzed the residues and reported anomalous alloys.

On 9 January 1986, several residents of Capilla del Monte (Córdoba, Argentina) —including an 11-year-old boy, Gabriel Gómez— said they saw a large round craft with windows land beside Cerro Pajarillo. The next day a scorched circular mark ~12 m wide and ~64 m around appeared. Journalist José de Zer covered it with huge impact; analyses found no soil anomalies or radiation.

On 12 July 1987, the crew of a Czechoslovak 51st Regiment Mi-24 helicopter was ordered to intercept a cylindrical object and chased it for two and a half hours, reporting accelerations from 60 to 2,700 km/h that evaded weapons lock. The three named crew held their account for over 35 years; the records were destroyed by order.

On the morning of 1 December 1987, a former police officer the literature calls 'Philip Spencer' (a pseudonym) said he crossed Ilkley Moor, in West Yorkshire, and photographed a ~1.2 m green humanoid with a large head and long arms that gestured at him and fled. Following it, he saw a silver dome rise and vanish; his compass pointed south and, on reaching Ilkley, he found ~2 hours of 'missing time'. The single, very blurry photo was examined by the Kodak laboratory at Hemel Hempstead with no evidence of tampering. Under hypnosis (March 1988) Spencer 'recalled' an abduction with a medical exam and an apocalyptic film. Investigated by Peter Hough and Jenny Randles, it remains unresolved: skeptics read it as a hoax (cut-out/person); its value is as an iconic testimonial case, not as evidence.

From November 1987, contractor Ed Walters of Gulf Breeze (Florida) circulated dozens of sharp Polaroid photographs of a dome-shaped object with a 'blue beam'. Some became ufological icons. In 1990, the new owners of his former house found in the attic a polystyrene model that reproduced the object almost exactly.

On January 20, 1988, around 4:00 am, Faye Knowles and her three adult sons (Patrick 24, Sean 21, Wayne 18) were driving on the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor Plain when they reported being pursued by a luminous ~1m object described as an egg-in-cup shape. The car was allegedly 'lifted', shaken, set back down, with smoke entering the cabin and altered voices. Ceduna police confirmed the family arrived visibly affected, observed dents on the roof and fine ash, and dismissed any suggestion of a hoax. Subsequent laboratory analyses were mixed: interior dust differed from exterior dust (Dr. Richard Haines, NASA) but additional analyses found no anomalous material. It is the Australian forensic-cohort case closest to the U.S. Cash-Landrum.

During the 1989–1990 Belgian wave, two F-16s chased a triangular object that produced nine radar locks and computed accelerations of 46G; General De Brouwer presented the data publicly. The best multi-sensor dataset documented by a NATO air force.

After children and adults reported an object and humanoid figures in a Voronezh park, the official Soviet agency TASS published a Glasnost-era statement calling the visit a 'scientifically proven fact' — unparalleled in official superpower communications.

In 1989, Bob Lazar told journalist George Knapp —initially with his face hidden— that he had worked at S-4, a facility near Groom Lake (Area 51), where he said he saw nine intact flying saucers of extraterrestrial origin and was hired to reverse-engineer their propulsion, powered by 'element 115'. His academic and employment credentials could never be verified.

In the early hours of 30 November 1989, Linda Napolitano claimed she was lifted by a beam of light from the 12th floor of her Lower East Side apartment in Manhattan and taken into a craft near the Brooklyn Bridge by three grey beings. Investigator Budd Hopkins made it his flagship case in 'Witnessed' (1997), citing more than 20 anonymous witnesses.

It was claimed that on 7 May 1989 South African Air Force Mirage fighters shot down an unidentified object that fell in the Kalahari Desert, with the craft and two occupants recovered. The whole case rests on documents supplied by James van Greunen, examined and found fraudulent; he himself admitted faking details. Researcher Cynthia Hind dismantled it in 'Anatomy of a hoax'. It is one of the most solidly debunked 'crash retrieval' cases.

On 4 August 1990, two men photograph a large diamond-shaped object hovering silently over the moors at Calvine, Scotland, with a military jet visible nearby. They handed the photos to a newspaper, which passed them to the Ministry of Defence; the originals 'disappeared' and were never published. David Clarke recovered a copy 32 years later.

France's largest UFO wave: on the night of 5 November 1990, thousands of witnesses across the country saw a large, dark, silent 'triangle' cross the sky from southwest to northeast. It was the atmospheric re-entry of the third stage of a Soviet Proton rocket, identified within days by SEPRA and independent satellite trackers.

On December 14, 1990, three independent air traffic controllers at different locations tracked on radar a cigar-shaped object crossing Greek airspace at over 3,000 mph, painting a hard target on screen. The Hellenic Air Force opened an official file on the case. Greece's first case in the corpus: multi-controller + hard radar + military file.

On the night of August 24, 1990, months before German reunification, hundreds of people in Greifswald, Lubmin and neighboring towns of the former East watched for almost an hour a cluster of 6-7 yellowish lights hanging over the bay, near the Lubmin nuclear power plant. The episode was captured in at least six videos and several photos —one of Europe's best camera-documented mass sightings. Honest framing: the most-discussed explanation is parachute flares dropped in a military exercise; the case's value is the multiple simultaneous visual documentation, not a proven anomaly.

A camera aboard shuttle Discovery captured a luminous point that turned about 90 degrees and accelerated after a flash; NASA attributed it to ice particles, while Carlotto's independent analysis computed ~14,000 mph in under a second, incompatible with that explanation.

On 12 April 1991, a nighttime explosion near Sasovo (Russia) opened a 28 m crater and broke windows and doors across half the town, with a baffling damage pattern: no trace of explosive, selective four-lobe damage and pipes torn off 15 km away. Ammonium nitrate, a tectonic origin and a hydrogen jet were considered; the case even interested the CIA and remains unresolved.

In 1991, militiamen (police) on patrol in Alma-Ata —then capital of Soviet Kazakhstan— reported an unidentified object near Kok-Tyube Mountain: a kind of fire at the summit emitting red rays that moved up and down. The episode was recorded in a CIA FOIA reading-room document. A documented case but of ambiguous phenomenon, included for its institutional trail rather than its strength.

On 11 July 1991, during the totality of the last total solar eclipse of the 20th century over Mexico City, dozens of people camcordered a bright, seemingly metallic object hovering in the darkened daytime sky. Broadcast on television by Jaime Maussan, it triggered the '1991-1993 wave' and founded the Latin American UFO-media ecosystem. Astronomical analysis identifies the object as the planet Venus.

From 1991, ufologist Bob Oechsler received anonymous parcels signed 'Guardian' with photos, forged government documents and a VHS video showing a large UFO landing amid flames near Carp (Ontario). A neighbour, Diane Labenek, had seen lights that night. After years of controversy, MUFON Ontario concluded in 1995 that the case was almost certainly a hoax.

Official Spanish Air Force UAP declassification process initiated in 1992 by Brigadier General Alfonso Fernández Aguado (then Deputy Chief of Staff of the Spanish Air Force) and continued by his successors through 1997. It released ~80 files archived by the Operational Air Command (MOA) between 1962 and 1995. Civilian researcher Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos structured the review, indexing and publication protocol. It is one of the few national UAP archives in the world systematically declassified by the military apparatus itself without congressional or judicial pressure — an institutional model later cited by analogous programs in France (CNES/GEPAN), Chile (CEFAA) and Uruguay (CRIDOVNI). ~20% of the files remained formally catalogued as 'without conventional explanation' after review.

Since 1992, the thermal and visible cameras with which CENAPRED monitors the Popocatépetl volcano have recorded between 50 and 200 events of objects emerging from or overflying the crater, automatically archived by a system not designed to detect UAP. AARO acknowledged at least one as anomalous (PR053): continuous, selection-bias-free instrumentation over active geological infrastructure.

Since 1992, the Scottish town of Bonnybridge, in the centre of the so-called 'Falkirk Triangle', concentrated hundreds of reports of lights and objects. Local councillor Billy Buchanan took the matter to government: he wrote to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Defence and pushed a council meeting in 1993. It is less an incident than a sustained 'hotspot' phenomenon — high volume, low individual evidence quality — and a case study in how a community and its local government process a wave.

On the night of 30–31 March 1993, a wave of sightings crossed the UK with more than a hundred witnesses, including police and military personnel. At RAF Cosford a guard saw lights over the base; at RAF Shawbury a meteorological officer described a large object sweeping the field with a beam of light at low speed before accelerating away at high speed. Nick Pope, of the MoD 'UFO desk', investigated and rated it of 'considerable defence significance'. Much of the wave coincides with the re-entry of a Russian rocket booster that night; the close-range Shawbury sighting remained the disputed residue.

Between March and June 1993, in the moshav of Kadima (near Netanya, Israel), several people —mostly women, in independent accounts— claimed encounters with a tall, bald 'gray'-type entity. The episode left verifiable material elements: circular depressions in a field with sampled residues (gelatinous material, reddish liquid, silicon deposits) and deep footprints that police tracked for several kilometers. The institutional response was real —about 30 Border Police officers combed the area— but the case's diffusion was dominated by sensational ufology (Barry Chamish), which erodes its credibility. It is the best-documented Israeli case, and it illustrates a high-strangeness point with fragile evidence: it enters the corpus as a Middle East opener and contrast case, not as an evidential anchor.

On 16 September 1994, 62 children at the Ariel School (Ruwa, Zimbabwe) watched a silver object settle beside the playground and small humanoid figures; Dr. John Mack of Harvard Medical School interviewed them with formal psychiatric methodology, and their accounts stayed consistent for three decades. The best-documented child-witness case in the corpus.

On January 28, 1994, the crew of Air France flight 3532's Airbus A320 (Capt. Jean-Charles Duboc) observed near Coulommiers a shape-shifting brown-red disc/lens about 300 m across. Military air-defense radar (CODA) recorded a ~50-second track of an object that crossed the aircraft's path at less than 1 nautical mile. GEIPAN classifies the case as 'unexplained' and the COMETA report highlights it. A multi-modal case: civil aviation + military radar + official agency.

On January 27, 1994, Captain Edward Rhodes and two co-pilots of a Tajik Air Boeing 747 reported, at 41,000 feet over Kazakhstan, a luminous object that overtook them at greater speed and altitude and maneuvered for over 40 minutes in circles, corkscrews and 90° turns. The episode was documented in a U.S. State Department cable and appears among the declassified PURSUE files (2026).

On the night of September 24, 1994, a group of six to eight people gathered on a beach on Orcas Island (San Juan Islands, Washington) to watch the stars reported two or three bright blue flashes in the sky, compared to the color of old flash cubes. The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) received five additional reports from independent sources about the same event, and at least one West Sound home reportedly recorded associated electrical anomalies. It is a low-strangeness, anecdotal, multi-witness case with no instrumentation: the probability allocation is dominated by prosaic explanations (transformer arc, bolide).

In June 1994, lumberjack Meng Zhaoguo, of the Red Flag camp in Wuchang (Heilongjiang, China), saw a metallic shine on Mount Phoenix and went to investigate what he thought was a downed helicopter; he said he was struck and, that night, had an intimate encounter with a very tall woman. It is China's most famous contact case, examined by local UFO societies.

On the morning of 18 January 1994, residents of Cando, in Galicia (Spain), saw a fireball in the sky for nearly a minute. On a nearby hillside a gouge appeared with about 200 m³ of terrain torn out and trees displaced 100 m, but with no fragments or meteorite. Described as a 'small Tunguska', a meteor or a subterranean gas burst were considered.

On 31 July 1995, during Aerolíneas Argentinas flight AR 674's final approach to Bariloche, the crew reported a luminous disc-shaped object escorting the aircraft while the airport suffered a total, simultaneous power blackout. The CEFAe opened an official file and the outage was independently documented by the local utility.

Brazilian Army operation in January 1996, one or more non-human creatures reported by civilians, soldier Marco Eli Cherese dead six weeks later from atypical bacterial infection. Thirty years later, the case remains politically alive: Brazilian witnesses testified behind closed doors in the U.S. Congress (Longworth, Jan 2026), a Brazilian neurosurgeon described a lilac-eyed entity, James Fox and Leslie Kean hosted the 30th-anniversary press conference at the National Press Club (Jan 2026), the Brazilian Superior Tribunal Militar dismissed the case as 'error and rumor' (Jan 2026), and the bipartisan Capitol press conference of Jun 9, 2026 specifically called to declassify Varginha records.

At 4:00 a.m. on August 28, 1996, Sergeant Nico Stander, on duty at the Adriaan Vlok police station in Pretoria, videotaped a pulsating luminous disc; resident Johann Becker saw it over Erasmuskloof. A chase ensued involving some 200 policemen and a police Bo-105 helicopter, piloted by Superintendent Fred Viljoen, who spotted the object over Mamelodi. During the pursuit the object made undulating movements and outpaced the helicopter at its maximum speed (~270 km/h); the chase was abandoned at 10,000 feet in the Cullinan area when fuel ran low and the object ascended vertically. Viljoen kept contact with the Waterkloof Air Force Base tower, whose radar reported 'clutter' in the area. It is the best-documented South African event in institutional multi-witness terms, though its hard instrumentation is ambiguous.

Twenty-two witnesses across five Yukon communities watched a huge, silent object over the Klondike Highway for three hours; later cartographic reconstruction traced a coherent ~300 km trajectory, incompatible with coordinated perceptual error.

During the STS-80 mission of Space Shuttle Columbia (19 Nov – 7 Dec 1996, the longest flight of the program), Earth-observation photography from the windows captured a small bright object silhouetted against the daytime limb of the Earth. NASA cataloged three of those frames as 'unidentified object' images (NASA-UAP-D030/031/032), declassified in 2026 in AARO's UAP Records. They are single-camera photos, with no radar or ranging data: the standard —and strongest— explanation is a fragment near the orbiter (ice, insulation or paint debris) lit by the Sun, whose scale and distance cannot be judged from a monocular image.

PURSUE's fourth and fifth drops released 34 videos with the same clean provenance as Release 01 —CENTCOM, INDOPACOM, NORTHCOM, and direct transfers from the Navy's UAPTF, without Release 02's chain-of-custody problem—, of which 16 already have their own case in this corpus. These remaining 18 do not: each is an area of contrast a sensor tracks, loses, and regains, with no accompanying report, technical comment, or distinctive behavior. They span from 1996 (the oldest video found in this session's entire DVIDS sweep) to 2025, and three theaters —the Middle East, the Indo-Pacific, and both U.S. coasts— without any single one supporting its own narrative.

Two USAF technical reports that PURSUE included in its first tranche (May 8, 2026) under the designations DOW-UAP-D48 and D49, but which are not sighting reports: one (1996) models unlikely space-booster failure modes with risk-calculation techniques; the other (2000) summarizes the launch history of Vandenberg AFB between 1958 and 2000. The corpus gathers them as rocketry reference material: the kind of document that explains why many 'UAP' reported near test ranges are in fact launches, reentries, fuel venting or booster failures. A tier-B document-case, valued as context for the mundane hypothesis, not as evidence of anomaly.

After two nights of sightings at Chacalluta airport (Arica) in March 1997, the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) created CEFAA (Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena) that year, under Chilean civil aviation. It brings together a multidisciplinary panel (astronomers, physicists, psychologists, aeronautical experts) to analyze FANI reports with a scientific method. Under the direction of General (ret.) Ricardo Bermúdez (2009–2016) it investigated and publicly acknowledged cases such as El Bosque (2010) and the naval helicopter (2014). It completes the quartet of Latin American official commissions alongside CRIDOVNI, OIFAA and CIAE.

Thousands of witnesses watched a triangular formation drift over Phoenix; a second event that night was explained as military flares, while the first remains unexplained. Governor Symington mocked the case in 1997 and years later said he had seen the object himself.

On the night of March 24, 1997, after reports of an object that crashed or exploded over the Howden Moors (Peak District), emergency services mounted one of the region's largest search operations (~200 personnel, £50,000+). The British Geological Survey recorded two 'sonic events' that night; low-flying RAF jets were involved. But no aircraft turned up and radars detected nothing. A multi-agency case about an object the official apparatus searched for but never confirmed.

In 1997 Stanford astrophysicist Peter Sturrock convened a panel of scientists to review the physical evidence associated with UAP cases. The report (1998) concluded that some cases present unexplained physical data deserving scientific study — without asserting extraterrestrial origin, but breaking the taboo that the subject is not investigable.

'Les OVNI et la Défense' (1999): report by COMETA, a committee of retired French generals and senior officers and aerospace experts (several linked to IHEDN). After reviewing cases with radar data and qualified witnesses, it concluded the extraterrestrial hypothesis is the most plausible for a residue of cases, and urged governments to prepare.

In the early hours of January 5, 2000, between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m., an enormous silent triangular object with brilliant white lights and a red beacon was tracked at low altitude by at least five on-duty police officers from several jurisdictions in St. Clair County, Illinois — Lebanon, Shiloh, Millstadt, Dupo — a few kilometers from Scott Air Force Base. The officers kept radio contact while tracking the object, and the calls were preserved in dispatch records. One of the best-documented triangle cases for the quality and independence of the witnesses.

Secret study by the UK Ministry of Defence's Defence Intelligence Staff ('Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK Air Defence Region'), completed in 2000 and declassified in 2006 via FOIA. It concluded UAP are real but with no evidence of non-human origin or hostile intent — and attributed many to poorly understood atmospheric plasmas ('buoyant plasmas').

The Peruvian Air Force's official office for anomalous aerial phenomena: born in the late 1990s as OIFAA (driven by Commander Julio Chamorro), formalized as DIFAA (Department for the Investigation of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena) in 2001, closed in 2005 for budget reasons and reactivated in October 2013. It investigated cases such as the Chulucanas wave (2002), the Pucallpa 'lights' (2008) and the radar double sighting off Lima airport (2019). It completes the quartet of Latin American official commissions alongside CRIDOVNI, CEFAA and CIAE.

In 2001, during a training flight in a T-37 off Çandarlı (Turkey's Aegean coast), two Turkish Air Force pilots reported a bright object shaped between a cone and a disc that approached at high speed and gyrated around the plane for about 30 minutes. They reported it to their controller and to the regional alert center of the Turkish army. Turkey's second corpus case: military pilot testimony reported up the chain of command.

Two U.S. State Department diplomatic cables declassified in the first PURSUE tranche (May 8, 2026) that share a series with the famous Mexico 2003 cable (#059UAP00013), but whose content barely touches the UAP phenomenon. #059UAP00011 (Tbilisi, Oct 2001) reports an airspace dispute: Georgia accused Russian aircraft of violating its airspace and bombing the Kodori Gorge, an accusation Russia denied. #059UAP00012 (Ashgabat, Nov 2004) describes, in an amused tone, how a Turkmen UFOlogist NGO had become a 'reliable partner' of the U.S. in civil-society building. A tier-B document-case: its interest is not a sighting but showing how a keyword-based declassification drags in diplomatic material only tangentially related to UAP.

Eric Davis's handwritten 2002 notes record Admiral Thomas Wilson — former DIA Vice Director — recounting that in 1997 he was denied access to a special access program on recovered technology despite his rank: the compartmentalization described matches Grusch's 2023 testimony.

In April 2002, a wave of dead animals with precise 'mutilations' (clean cuts, absence of blood, missing soft organs) shook public opinion in central Argentine provinces, linked by many to UFOs. The animal-health agency SENASA concluded it was natural scavenging, attributing the pattern to wildlife —including the 'red mouse opossum'—, an explanation that was heavily debated. It is the Argentine skeptical case par excellence: apparent anomaly vs. natural explanation.

A U.S. State Department diplomatic cable (document #059UAP00013, filed September 16, 2003) records that, on September 12, 2003, the Mexican Congress heard testimony on unidentified aerial phenomena as part of debate over a proposed 'Aerial Space Protection Law'. According to the cable, presenters showed 'two alleged alien corpses' and videos of Mexican pilots' encounters. The document itself notes the disagreement over the validity of the purported corpses, takes no analytical position, and the law did not pass. The cable resurfaced declassified in the first release of the PURSUE system (May 8, 2026): it is a diplomatic record of the event, not a verification of the claims, and it precedes Jaime Maussan's 2023 hearing by twenty years.

Between 2003 and 2005, Air Force military police officer Jeffrey Nuccetelli documented five UAP incidents at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, home of the National Missile Defense Project, during what the National Reconnaissance Office called the 'most important' launches 'in twenty-five years'. The most cited, on October 14, 2003, is known as the 'Vandenberg Red Square': Boeing contractors reported a massive, glowing red square silently hovering over two missile defense sites. That same night, Nuccetelli responded to a second incident involving a rectangular craft seen by five witnesses, and months later he had his own off-duty encounter with a blue-white sphere that appeared and disappeared in the sky. He testified under oath on September 9, 2025, before the House Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets.

USS Princeton's Aegis radar tracked objects dropping from 80,000 to 20,000 feet in under a second; Cmdr. Fravor and seven other military witnesses observed the 'Tic-Tac', and the ATFLIR video was officially released by the Pentagon. The modern benchmark case.

On 5 March 2004 a Mexican Air Force crew filmed up to eleven objects invisible to the naked eye with an infrared (FLIR) camera over the Bay of Campeche. Mexico's SEDENA released the footage officially —an unusual act of military transparency— though the strongest explanation points to gas flares from the Cantarell oil platforms.

On March 5, 2004, the crew of a Mexican Air Force Merlin C26A (501st squadron), on an anti-drug patrol over the Bay of Campeche, recorded with its StarSAFIRE II infrared sensor as many as eleven objects that seemed to surround the aircraft; only some appeared on radar. The Secretariat of National Defense handed the footage to journalist Jaime Maussan, who released it in May 2004. The strongest explanation —flares from the offshore Cantarell oil wells— is prosaic but disputed. A Tier A case: official military sensor data, object with a probable mundane reading.

In 2004, in response to an unidentified object in the airspace near Lisbon, the Portuguese Air Force put F-16s on standby. The force's spokesperson, Colonel Carlos Barbosa, publicly confirmed that defense radar registered a 'target' for two or three minutes, with no final explanation. Portugal's first case in the corpus: official confirmation of a radar return, with no investigation program to back it.

On 5 March 2004, a Mexican Air Force aircraft on an anti-narcotics patrol over Campeche detected eleven spherical objects on radar and FLIR, visible only in infrared; Defense Secretary Clemente Vega García personally authorized release of the video. It is a calibration case: official disclosure does not imply anomaly, and a plausible conventional explanation (reflections from oil platforms) remains.

On August 21, 2004, more than a hundred people in Tinley Park and neighboring towns of the Chicago area observed three reddish-orange lights in a triangular formation gliding silently across the sky. The episode repeated on Halloween night 2004, with dozens of additional witnesses across several towns. It is one of the best-documented mass sightings investigated by MUFON —Illinois MUFON director Sam Maranto compiled photos and video and publicly maintained it was not a hoax. But the prosaic explanation is robust: silent orange lights in a drifting formation are the classic signature of sky lanterns or flares. With no agreed resolution, it enters the corpus as a case of high testimonial participation and low evidential weight.

On 7 November 2006, at least twelve United Airlines employees watched a stationary metallic disc over Gate C-17 at O'Hare airport before it shot upward, punching a hole through the clouds. The FAA denied holding any records; a Chicago Tribune FOIA suit forced release of the internal audio that contradicted the denial.

On 17 May 2007, Executive Decree No. 129 ordered the declassification of the Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE) files on anomalous aerial observations, including the 1989 encounter between a Mirage F.1 fighter and an unidentified object over the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Night guard Yalçın Yalman filmed disc-shaped objects over the Sea of Marmara for two years, including in daylight — over 35 hours of video; Turkey's state scientific council (TÜBİTAK) analyzed the tapes and concluded there was no manipulation.

On January 8, 2007, contractor Chris Bledsoe and four witnesses —his 17-year-old son and three subcontractors— reported three orange objects appearing to land near the Cape Fear River in North Carolina, followed that same night by an alleged entity encounter at his home. MUFON investigated with regressive hypnosis, a psychiatric evaluation, and a polygraph that flagged signs of deception on part of Bledsoe's answers; he has since built a public career of books and documentaries that includes the claim —never corroborated by any document or named NASA official— of having been investigated by that agency for eight years.

Between 31 December 2007 and 2 January 2008, residents of Mezcala (Guerrero, Mexico) reported one or more luminous objects, one of which remained for nearly 72 hours over a nearby hill, emitting flashes. There were mass witnesses: some approached and filmed it, others fled. Ufologist Ana Luisa Cid documented it with videos and interviews and spread it on television. The documentation is entirely from popular ufology —with no technical or skeptical analysis—, and a luminous object fixed for days fits the classic pattern of a misidentified celestial object, though the case was never formally resolved.

U.S. DoD federal program (~USD 22M, 2008–2010), requested by Senator Harry Reid, contracted to the DIA and executed by Robert Bigelow's BAASS from the Skinwalker Ranch in Utah. It produced 38 Defense Intelligence Reference Documents (DIRDs) on exotic physics and biological effects. The first formally documented U.S. federal program after Project Blue Book — with contracts, paid receipts and testimony under declaration — and the direct precursor to AATIP (Elizondo) and the disclosure wave that culminates in AARO and the 2023–2025 congressional hearings. The case also folds in the three instrumented-measurement campaigns at the property —NIDS (1996–2004), BAASS and Brandon Fugal's televised team— and their results, of far lower evidential quality than the program's paperwork.

Brazil's National Archives keeps public —via the SIAN platform— the 'Óvnis Fund': a collection of UFO records produced by the Air Force Command (FAB) spanning 1952 to 2023 (reports, official communications, images, audio and drawings). The institutional flow begins in 2008, when the FAB started routing declassified material to the archive. The National Archives' official figure is around 743 records; the 2026 press reported it as close to 900. In 2026, amid the global disclosure push, it was highlighted by the press as one of the world's most open state UAP archives — a contrast with U.S. strategic ambiguity.

On July 2, 2008, an unidentified object was observed over Harare International Airport in Zimbabwe, possibly by both radar and optical means. A CIA cable dated the next day —classified 'Secret' and declassified only in 2026 through the third PURSUE release— describes a 'disc-like' object with a hollow center, a series of rotating lights on the underside and 'beams' emanating from it, hovering at an undetermined altitude. The report escalated to the White House Situation Room and the intelligence community, putting CIA assets in Zimbabwe on high alert; internally there was debate over whether it was a foreign government's surveillance platform or an object of non-human origin. There is no independently verifiable evidence beyond the intelligence document itself.

Dozens of witnesses — including a constable — reported a large, silent object over Stephenville, Texas; FAA primary radar data obtained via FOIA correlated a track heading toward the restricted airspace of the presidential ranch.

In April 2008, residents of the San Juan hamlet near Pucallpa (Peruvian Amazon, Ucayali) reported 'lights' that flew over the area at night and shot beams of light at people, causing terror. The Peruvian Air Force's OIFAA, led by Commander Julio César Chamorro, received the report and had personnel in the region; the civilian inquiry was carried out by three Communication Sciences students from the University of Lima. It is a low-documentation case —mostly testimonial and secondary— that echoes, on a smaller scale, the Colares pattern.

In 2009, the Royal Danish Air Force declassified and opened its UFO files to the public: 329 pages of reports (1978–2002) handed to the SUFOI association, with over 200 unresolved sightings out of ~15,000 reports accumulated over three decades. The official reason: 'there was nothing secret in the files.' Among the cases: a luminous triangular object north of Bornholm during the NATO Mainbrace exercise (1952) and unexplained radar echoes over the Baltic (1956). Denmark's first record: the value is the institutional declassification, framed honestly that most were explained.

In April 2009, a member of the Salvadoran Air Force — who asked to remain anonymous — photographed aircraft parked on the military ramp from the second floor of the First Air Brigade building at Ilopango Airport. On reviewing the image, an unidentified object appeared near the threshold of the old runway 08, in broad daylight, that had not been noticed at the moment of capture. The case, together with antecedents such as the January 1969 sighting over San Salvador, is documented by the Salvadoran aviation community. Its value is geographic: it opens El Salvador in the corpus. Its evidence is weak: a single frame from an enthusiast source, an anonymous photographer, with no analysis or chain of custody — the classic pattern of an object captured but not seen, compatible with a mundane artifact.

On 9 December 2009, at dawn, an enormous grey spiral with a blue beam emerging from one end appeared over northern Norway, visible for about 10 minutes across thousands of square kilometres. The next day, the Russian Defence Ministry acknowledged it was a failed Bulava missile test: the third stage spun and the vented fuel, lit by the Sun, drew the spiral.

During a FACh air parade at El Bosque (Santiago), nobody noticed anything live; on later reviewing the footage, an engineer spotted an object crossing at high speed between the squadrons. CEFAA gathered seven independent videos, commissioned a photogrammetric analysis that estimated very high speeds, and classified the case as anomalous. Later analyses proposed an insect near the lens.

On the night of 7 July 2010, an unidentified luminous object caused the closure of Hangzhou's Xiaoshan International Airport for about an hour; several flights were diverted or delayed and thousands of passengers were affected. The episode became one of the most reported sightings in modern China. Authorities investigated and hinted at a link to undisclosed military activity; there was never a conclusive public explanation, and the most widely circulated photographs are consistent with a long-exposure trail of an aircraft.

Prospective Special Access Program (PSAP) proposed to DHS around 2011, derived from the DIA's AAWSAP/AATIP and led by Dr. Jim Lacatski. It proposed to study UFO technology, interview witnesses and hold recovered materials — but was terminated on February 10, 2012 without being approved, unfunded and never receiving any material. Declassified by DHS in 2023 and officially documented by AARO.

The Argentine Air Force created CEFAe (Commission for the Study of Aerospace Phenomena) on 6 May 2011 to analyze reports of unidentified aerial phenomena. From 2014, under Commodore (ret.) Rubén Lianza, it adopted a scientific-technical approach and resolved most cases as prosaic phenomena (celestial bodies, drones, reflections, satellites). In 2019 it was reorganized as CIAE (Aerospace Identification Center). It is Argentina's official body, completing the Latin American quartet alongside CRIDOVNI (Uruguay), OIFAA (Peru) and CEFAA (Chile).

One night in June or July 2011, two people in a car leaving their driveway watched a massive black triangle pass low overhead heading north, a car-sized white light at each corner, emitting a low, pulsing hum. They estimated its dimensions at roughly 200 by 100 feet, about 800 feet up. The object disappeared behind the treeline in 10-15 seconds, leaving no contrail, before they could film it. The FBI took both witnesses' statements in April 2025 — nearly fourteen years after the event.

In May 2011, a grainy video attributed to 1940s-50s U.S. military archives circulated online, showing an extremely thin grey being —nicknamed 'Skinny Bob'— blinking and moving. No one claimed authorship for 13 years. In 2025, self-described former Army intelligence analyst Edward 'Eddie' Abbott stated he had seen the complete, unedited footage inside a SCIF in 2008, with no independent verification. Between May and July 2026, the YouTube channel 'qtecqot' uploaded three new videos —'recovery footage' of the same being and a walkthrough of a craft's interior— structured as an alternate-reality game. An independent technical analysis (a verification bench using ExifTool, C2PA, SynthID and FFmpeg) found specular highlights that stay fixed while underlying geometry moves, a signature generative-AI failure, plus background incoherence — strong evidence of synthetic fabrication disguised as classified 8mm film.

Between August and October 2012, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police unit at Pangong Tso lake (Ladakh) logged over a hundred sightings of luminous objects crossing from the Chinese side. The Army deployed radar and three technical agencies —ISRO, DRDO and NTRO— ruled out drones, satellites and UAVs before filing the case unresolved.

In the summer of 2012, Air Force geospatial intelligence specialist Dylan Borland reported seeing, near the NASA hangar at Langley Air Force Base (Virginia), a triangular object roughly 100-150 feet across that interfered with his phone, made no sound, and ascended at extreme speed before disappearing over the Atlantic. The episode stayed private until Borland recounted it under oath before Congress on September 9, 2025, alleging subsequent professional retaliation. In August 2026 he escalated the account in an interview, claiming a non-human intelligence 'controls' the cover-up —his own interpretation of a secondhand, unnamed comment, with no new verifiable data.

In May 2024, Chilean senator Karim Bianchi (independent, Magallanes) revealed in a television interview that in 2012, while driving from Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas, a spinning light shut off his car and phone, and that he 'appeared' about 200 km further along the same route with no memory of the drive. He described aftereffects —recurring owl sightings, electric shocks when shaking hands for nearly a year— and a visit, days later, from a man who gave him supposed secret NASA documents asking him to 'spread the message'. He stayed silent for over a decade anticipating criticism, and did not retract after the wave of mockery that followed the interview.

In April 2013, technicians at the Doña Inés de Collahuasi mine —over 4,300 m in the Atacama altiplano— photographed a disc-shaped object that lingered nearby for about an hour before moving off. CEFAA, the official committee of Chile's DGAC under General (ret.) Ricardo Bermúdez, investigated the images with optical and thermal analysis and one analyst rated them an object or phenomenon of great interest, unidentified. Bermúdez himself urged caution: it was a single analyst's conclusion and the witnesses did not cooperate.

A US Customs and Border Protection DHC-8 filmed with its thermal camera, for over three minutes, an object crossing from air to water with no apparent deceleration and splitting in two. Analysed as the only FLIR record of sustained transmedium behaviour, until AARO resolved the case as two objects drifting with the wind whose apparent speed came from parallax — a technical dispute that remains open.

In 2013, an infrared sensor aboard a U.S. military platform within U.S. Central Command's (CENTCOM) area of responsibility recorded one minute and 46 seconds of a contrast pattern AARO describes as 'an eight-pointed star with arms of alternating length.' The object leaves a visible trail as it moves and disappears from frame after an apparent cut in the footage, reappearing before finally exiting through the top left corner. The original reporter left no oral or written description of the observation — everything known comes from AARO's instrumental reading of the video, eleven years after the fact.

On 15 February 2013, a meteoroid about 20 metres across entered the atmosphere over Chelyabinsk (Russia) and exploded at ~30 km altitude with the energy of 20-30 Hiroshima bombs. The shock wave broke windows in six cities and injured some 1,500 people. It was the first impact of that magnitude documented massively on video (dashcams).

F/A-18 pilots from the USS Theodore Roosevelt air wing log near-daily UAP contacts off the U.S. East Coast (summer 2014–March 2015), confirmed by radar, infrared and visual. The Gimbal and GoFast videos come from these sorties. Ryan Graves reports a near-miss and files formal flight-safety complaints.

A Chilean Navy Cougar helicopter filmed nine minutes of infrared video of an object visible only in thermal imaging off Valparaíso; CEFAA ran a two-year multi-agency investigation and officially published the footage and report in 2017.

In October 2014 the posthumous video of Boyd Bushman, a retired Lockheed Martin senior scientist, recorded weeks before his death, was published: he claimed the U.S. employed extraterrestrials at Area 51 and showed photos of an alien as proof. The debunking was immediate and conclusive: the 'alien' was a rubber doll sold at Walmart. The canonical case of unverified aerospace-insider testimony.

On 1 September 2015, the Ground Surveillance Radar (GSR) at the Pantex Plant —the primary U.S. nuclear-weapons assembly facility, in Amarillo, Texas— detected an unidentified object west of the facilities, flying north at 10–15 mph. The Protective Force activated the drone (UAS) response plan, secured all gates and pursued the object by vehicle. Witnesses with binoculars found no propulsion and heard no sound; the object —'diamond'-shaped, ~4 ft, which sped up and changed course when followed— was also tracked by the CROWS camera on a Bearcat and filmed from the GSR tower. The video was sent to Sandia National Labs and the evidence handed to the FBI. UCNI report declassified in 2026 (AARO, DOEUAPD005).

In October 2016, John Podesta's leaked emails revealed substantive UAP exchanges with Tom DeLonge, astronaut Edgar Mitchell and other disclosure-world figures. Beyond the content, the cryptographically authentic leak documents an operational pre-disclosure network that preceded the public events of 2017–2026 by years.

The first PURSUE drop released the Department of War's series of UAP operational reports: mission reports (MISREP), 'range fouler debriefs,' internal correspondence, and sensor footage covering five commands —CENTCOM (Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Syria, Iraq), INDOPACOM (East China Sea, Japan), EUCOM (Greece), AFRICOM, and the Department of the Army— between 2016 and 2026. It is not a single incident but the documentary set: each report tersely and mostly redactedly records that a crew reported an unidentified phenomenon. Its value lies in the pattern —reporting was sustained operational routine for nearly a decade across five theaters— not in resolving any particular sighting.

On April 16, 2016, a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft filmed over Mosul a metallic sphere moving with no wings, visible propulsion or obvious thermal signature. The video was officially presented by Pentagon AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick at the April 2023 Senate hearing, where it was shown alongside a near-identical 2022 Middle East case and declared 'still being studied'. Iraq's first case: an officially acknowledged, unresolved military sensor datum —its strength is the institutional chain of custody, not a conclusion about its nature.

On 18 November 2016 a P-8A Poseidon monitoring a carrier task group in the Eastern Mediterranean tracked an unidentified object on its electro-optical and infrared sensor some 55 nautical miles northwest of Latakia, flying at roughly 500 knots on a southeasterly heading in a sea-skimming profile. The crew described it as a possible missile launch and lost contact about two minutes later. The report was filed as routine regional activity, and eight years later it was declassified in the first PURSUE tranche.

On 16 December 2017, The New York Times ran on its front page 'Glowing Auras and "Black Money": The Pentagon's Mysterious U.F.O. Program' (bylined Helene Cooper, Ralph Blumenthal and Leslie Kean), revealing the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP): a Department of Defense program funded with ~US$22 million between 2007 and 2012, pushed by Senator Harry Reid, with contracts to Bigelow Aerospace. The same day, To The Stars Academy released two Navy videos (FLIR1/Nimitz and Gimbal) and Luis Elizondo surfaced as the former official who claimed to have run it. It was the event that made UAP mainstream and chained into the UAPTF (2020) and the ODNI report (2021).

First confirmed interstellar object to pass through the Solar System (2017). It showed a non-gravitational acceleration —moving away from the Sun faster than gravity alone explains— with no visible cometary tail or coma, and an extreme shape (highly elongated or disk-like). The consensus treats it as an unusual natural object; Avi Loeb argued the behavior is consistent with radiation pressure on a thin sail, leaving the technological hypothesis open.

In 2017, religious-studies professor Diana Walsh Pasulka and Stanford immunologist Garry Nolan were taken —blindfolded— to an undisclosed New Mexico site presented as the location of a 1940s impact (explicitly not Roswell). They dug up lightweight, unusual-looking metallic material, of which Nolan took samples. Pasulka recounted the episode in 'American Cosmic' (Oxford University Press, 2019). The site was never disclosed or verified: the case is valuable as an ethnography of the crash-retrieval culture, not as a confirmed trace.

In October 2017, an infrared sensor aboard a force-protection aerostat near Al Taqaddum Air Base, Iraq, recorded 17 minutes of footage of an unidentified object — one of the longest continuous recordings in the corpus. AARO employed full-motion video analysis, pixel examination, and geo-locational data from the aerostat itself to assess the object's speed and direction, concluding it was a cluster of partially and fully inflated balloons, whose appearance matches other already-documented balloon-cluster observations. AARO assesses the object did not exhibit anomalous performance characteristics.

In 2018, an infrared sensor at a joint military base in Iraq captured a 'jellyfish'-shaped object that overflew the installation, descended over water and, according to journalist Jeremy Corbell who leaked the video in January 2024, submerged before re-emerging and departing. The Pentagon neither confirmed nor denied the footage's authenticity.

On November 9, 2018, around 06:47, the pilot of a British Airways flight (B787) asked Shannon ATC whether there were military exercises: she had seen an object 'moving so fast', a bright light that veered north at high speed. A Virgin flight reported multiple bright objects on the same trajectory. Radar showed nothing and the Irish Aviation Authority opened an investigation, with the ATC recordings made public. Ireland's first case; honest framing: the most likely explanation is a bolide/meteor, but the institutional response was documented.

Of the 50 videos AARO located on a classified network while responding to a FOIA request from eight members of Congress for 51 potentially UAP-related records, 21 already have their own case in this corpus for some distinctive trait (a title matching the description, an explicit digital-alteration admission, a technical AARO comment). These remaining 27 do not: each is an area of contrast an infrared sensor tracks, loses, and regains, with a title assigned by whoever uploaded the file to the classified network —not by AARO— and lacking the substantiated chain of custody that Release 01's operational reports do have. They are catalogued here together so that none remains entirely invisible on the site.

In December 2018, a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor aboard an uncrewed U.S. Air Force platform recorded footage over the Mediterranean that appeared to show an object transiting the superheated gas and ash plume of an erupting Mount Etna, Sicily. AARO coordinated an interagency and international analytical effort and determined that optical effects from the intense atmospheric conditions near the volcano had distorted the video, making the object appear to cross the plume. The agency assesses with moderate confidence that the footage actually shows a balloon roughly 170 kilometers from the caldera, traveling at wind speed and direction.

On 15 July 2019, in a restricted warning area off San Diego, the Combat Information Center of the USS Omaha recorded with FLIR/night vision a sphere that flew over the sea, stopped, and descended into the water with no visible wake ('transmedium' behavior). Radar showed at one point up to 14 spheres surrounding the ship. Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp released the material in 2021; the Pentagon confirmed it was captured by Navy personnel and was under UAPTF analysis —authenticity confirmed, not explanation.

A detail the title omits but the official record does note: the video 'was digitally altered prior to its upload to the classified network' — it includes black title cards reading 'zoomed in' and 'sharpened, zoomed, motion tracked, contrast enhanced, slow to 60% speed' before cutting to 'original video,' meaning a third party's edit of the raw footage, not unprocessed sensor recording.

The first executed several ninety-degree turns at roughly 80 mph before dropping off the sensor feed; the second moved at about 30 mph heading toward land. Both operators used the same phrase to describe them —'seemingly circular, too small to make out details'— and both marked the intelligent-control box as 'no.'
