On the night of July 24, 1981, roughly between 10:33 and 10:53 p.m., hundreds of thousands of people across 14 Chinese provinces observed an enormous luminous spiral expanding in the sky — possibly the most-witnessed unidentified aerial event in history. Planetary astronomer Wang Sichao, of the Purple Mountain Observatory (Chinese Academy of Sciences), studied it for years and estimated an altitude of about 650 km and a speed of ~1.6 km/s. Those parameters, together with the spiral morphology, point to the known prosaic mechanism: a rocket or satellite upper stage venting fuel in the upper atmosphere — the same phenomenon that produced the 2009 Norway spiral and the Chinese spirals confirmed as launches in 2013 and 2025. It belongs in the corpus as a calibration anchor: the most-witnessed event is not the most anomalous.

Limited evidence: single-witness, local or without primary verification. The night in question

Around 10:33 p.m. on July 24, 1981, a bright star-like point appeared in the sky over northern and central China and began to expand into a 'cloud-like' luminous spiral band, growing for about six or seven minutes before fading around 10:53 p.m. The phenomenon was visible simultaneously across as many as 14 provinces and cities; estimates speak of hundreds of thousands of witnesses, making it one of the most widely observed unidentified aerial events ever recorded. The shape —a spiral opening from a core and smearing out like smoke— is exactly the kind of phenomenon that terrifies a ground observer and yet has a now well-characterized physical cause.

Unlike most mass sightings, this one received sustained scientific study. Wang Sichao, a planetary astronomer at the Purple Mountain (Zijinshan) Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, collected more than seventy witness reports over the years and devoted more than two decades to studying this and other sightings. He reconstructed the trajectory of the 1981 event: he placed the object at an altitude of roughly 650 kilometers and attributed to it a speed of about 1.6 km/s before it disappeared. Those figures are significant: 650 km is low orbital altitude, far above any aircraft or atmospheric phenomenon, and 1.6 km/s is the order of magnitude of an object in a space regime. It is worth being precise about Wang's stance, because it is often misrepresented: he held that the object moved in a way that did not fit a natural body, and across his career argued that some Chinese sightings deserved an 'intelligent, non-natural' explanation. In other words, the physical signature (orbital altitude and speed) comes from Chinese institutional science; the prosaic reading of that signature is the corpus's, not necessarily Wang's own conclusion.

The combination of orbital altitude, speed and spiral morphology matches a mechanism well understood in astronautics: a rocket upper stage or a satellite venting propellant or gases while tumbling, forming a spiral lit by the Sun against an already-dark sky (the so-called 'twilight effect'). It is exactly the phenomenon later confirmed behind the 2009 Norway spiral (the failed launch of the Russian Bulava missile) and several subsequent Chinese 'UFO spirals' officially attributed to launches —a case for which Wang himself was quoted in the press when a sounding rocket was mistaken for a UFO. The specific attribution of the 1981 event to a particular launch was not closed in the public record, and that is where the case's honesty lies: the physics points robustly to a human object in a space regime venting propellant, but the documentary chain that would tie the 1981 spiral to a dated, named launch was never completed. What exists is a causal mechanism amply confirmed in analogous events, not a closing record for this particular one.

Why this case moved the needle

It is the corpus's first 'classic' Chinese case and, by witness count, one of the most massive unidentified events ever recorded — an obvious gap missing from the Asian coverage. But its real value is calibration: it shows that the event with the most observers is not necessarily the most anomalous. Witness count measures how many people looked at the sky, not how exotic the cause was; a rocket spiral seen at 650 km altitude is geometrically enormous, which is why it is witnessed by hundreds of thousands across whole provinces, without bringing it one inch closer to a craft under intelligent control.

The corpus's discipline requires including mass events with prosaic resolution, not only the unresolved ones, so the model's signal is not inflated by selection bias: a corpus that collected only unexplained cases would produce a spurious probability in favor of anomaly. Here Chinese institutional science itself —an Academy of Sciences astronomer— supplied the parameters (650 km altitude, ~1.6 km/s) that fit a rocket or satellite spiral, the same mechanism confirmed in Norway 2009 and in later Chinese spirals. There is, however, a tension the corpus must state plainly: that same astronomer, Wang Sichao, did not conclude this was space junk, but argued for a non-natural reading of several Chinese sightings. The corpus departs here from the expert witness and stays with the physical signature, because the spiral morphology plus orbital altitude and speed are, together, nearly diagnostic of propellant venting. Tier B and low probability precisely because the known-physics explanation is strong; it is kept as an honest counterweight to the corpus's anomalous anchors, and as a reminder that 'a serious scientist studied it' is not the same as 'the scientist concluded anomaly'.
