Part 01

The night in question

At 4:10 a.m. on September 7, 1984, an Aeroflot Tupolev Tu-134 flying the Tbilisi–Tallinn route observed, near Minsk (Byelorussian SSR), a yellow point from which a beam of light emerged and turned into a cone; the object repeatedly changed shape —rays, concentric circles, a 'cloud', an amorphous mass—. Co-pilot Gennady Lazurin and other crew described it in detail; one compared it to 'a cigar with three beams of light', and the crew sketched the changing shapes they had seen. Air traffic control reported the radar showed a 'double' object, interpreted as the aircraft and the unidentified object together.

The episode caused a sensation when the trade-union newspaper Trud, one of the highest-circulation papers in the USSR, published it on January 30, 1985 under the title 'At 4:10 Sharp', making it the most famous Soviet UAP case. That an official daily devoted space to a pilots' sighting was itself notable in a controlled press system, and it forced an investigation: the case was referred to the state network for studying the phenomenon (the program later known as SETKA) and discussed by specialists. Decades later, skeptical analysis (among others, by specialist James Oberg and the Skeptical Inquirer) convincingly linked it to a rocket launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome that morning: the phenomenology (a beam expanding into a cone, shape changes, simultaneous visibility from other aircraft in the region) fits an illuminated fuel plume in the upper atmosphere. It enters the corpus as Tier A for the quality of the record —multiple professional crew, radar, national press and an official investigation—, with low probability because the conventional explanation (Plesetsk) is strong.

Why this case moved the needle

It is the most famous Soviet UAP case and, for that very reason, one of the corpus's best calibration cases. It combines almost everything that usually elevates a file —multiple professional crew aboard an airliner, confirmation of a radar echo, national press coverage (extraordinary in the USSR of the era), and an official investigation forced by the scandal— and yet the strongest explanation is not exotic: a rocket launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome that same morning.

The strength of the conventional explanation is that it predicts the observed phenomenology precisely. A sunlit fuel plume in the upper atmosphere, seen from a moving aircraft, expands from a point into a cone, changes shape as the gas diffuses and the illumination geometry shifts, and is visible simultaneously across a wide region —which explains why other aircraft in the area reported the same object—. Space analyst James Oberg, who specializes in conflating sightings with Soviet rocket activity, and the Skeptical Inquirer reconstructed this link convincingly. The 'double' radar echo, far from proving a maneuvering solid, is consistent with an ambiguous return on a system of that era.

Its value to the corpus is twofold. On one hand it documents that the Soviet apparatus took the phenomenon seriously and opened an investigation, a valuable institutional datum for an era of secrecy. On the other, it is a sharp methodological caution: trained pilots plus radar confirmation are not enough to declare an anomaly unless known stimuli like re-entries, bolides and space launches have first been ruled out. That is why it is Tier A for the quality of the record, but with low probability: when the conventional explanation fits all of the observed phenomenology this well, the burden of proof has not been met.
