On the night of August 13-14, 1956, radar operators at three USAF bases in the United Kingdom — RAF Bentwaters, RAF Lakenheath, and Sculthorpe — simultaneously detected anomalous tracks moving at speeds of 2,000 to 4,000 mph. The tracks were confirmed independently on AGI/MPN-11 (ground control approach) radar and CPN-4 search radar.
The RAF launched two Venom NF.3s from RAF Waterbeach. The first Venom achieved a radar lock on the object, but the object instantly positioned itself behind the aircraft — inverting the tactical situation — and held the tail position for 10 minutes despite the pilot's evasive maneuvers. The pilot radioed: 'My gunsight is locked on but I can't shake him'. The object eventually departed vertically.
The case was one of the few classified as 'genuinely puzzling and inexplicable' by the Condon Committee (University of Colorado UFO Project, 1968) — the report whose administrative conclusion was precisely the opposite: that the UAP phenomenon did not merit scientific investigation. Lakenheath-Bentwaters' inclusion as an inexplicable case is cited as an example of the Condon Report's internal inconsistency.
