Between 22:50 on November 2 and 01:30 on November 3, 1957, Sheriff Weir Clem of Hockley County, Texas received 15 independent calls from motorists within a 16 km radius around Levelland. All reported the same phenomenon: a bright oval object on or near the road; their engines died and headlights went out as they approached; as the object moved away the systems spontaneously restored.
Sheriff Clem and his deputy drove to the scene and themselves observed a bright red-orange object before it rose and disappeared. Pedro Saucedo, the first witness of the event, had stopped his vehicle fearing a collision; his engine and lights failed as the object passed over the vehicle and recovered after it left.
Project Blue Book investigated and attributed the event to 'ball lightning' — an insufficient explanation for 15 independent motorists with repeatable electrical effects on different vehicles over three hours in atmospherically normal weather (no thunderstorm reported). Dr. James McDonald's (University of Arizona) 1968 investigation documented the inconsistencies and cataloged Levelland as one of the rigorous unexplained cases.
