Between December 1948 and April 1950, military personnel and scientists at Sandia Base, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Kirtland AFB systematically reported bright green spheres flying over key nuclear facilities of the U.S. atomic program. The geographic and temporal concentration of the reports (209 cases in under 18 months over the Albuquerque-Los Alamos corridor) was statistically anomalous.
The Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP) — the entity that custodied the U.S. nuclear arsenal — commissioned a formal investigation from Dr. Lincoln La Paz, astrophysicist at the University of New Mexico. La Paz concluded that the trajectories and behaviors did not match meteoric bolides. The USAF established Project Twinkle (1949-1951) with dedicated telescopes and instrumentation to photograph the green fireballs. The project produced no clear images but documented dozens of additional instrumented observations.
AARO designated this event set as official case PURSUE R02 in its 2024 release, ratifying its documentary validity and its temporal-geographic pattern over nuclear infrastructure.
