Part 01
The years in question
Beginning in late 1948, military personnel, intelligence officers, and scientists across New Mexico's nuclear corridor — Sandia Base, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, and the White Sands/Holloman area — began reporting 'green fireballs': intensely green balls or streaks crossing the sky, often horizontally and without the descending arc typical of a meteor. The first prominent sighting is usually dated to Phoenix on October 24, 1948, followed by a series over Albuquerque from November onward. The geographic and temporal concentration was striking: appearances clustered over sensitive nuclear facilities and almost nowhere else. The corpus records about 209 cataloged reports in the intense phase.
Kirtland AFB intelligence and the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP) — the entity that custodied the nuclear arsenal — took the matter seriously precisely because of the proximity to strategic targets. On December 9, 1948, Dr. Lincoln La Paz, director of the Institute of Meteoritics at the University of New Mexico and one of the country's leading meteor authorities, who already held top-secret clearance, was brought in. La Paz organized triangulation calculations and impact searches; he found no meteoritic debris and concluded that the intense green color, horizontal trajectory, absence of sound, and lack of fragments did not match natural bolides. His personal hypothesis leaned toward some kind of artifact, possibly a Soviet reconnaissance device.
In response, the USAF established Project Twinkle (operational around 1949-1951), which set up cinetheodolite and observation stations near White Sands to photograph and triangulate the phenomena. Results were poor: coverage difficulties, lack of continuous staffing, and few instrumental captures. Project Twinkle's final report, with no positive identification, leaned toward a natural or inconclusive origin, and the program closed without resolving the puzzle — an outcome skeptics read as confirmation of a natural cause and proponents as instrumental failure due to underfunding.
The strongest mundane explanation is that some sightings were genuine green meteors: green color can be produced by burning nickel or by excitation of atmospheric oxygen, and New Mexico has clear skies and a technical population trained to watch the sky, raising the reporting rate. La Paz's objection — a meteor expert who specifically ruled out the meteoric explanation for the subset he studied — is the counterweight that prevents closing the case as a simple bolide shower. AARO subsequently designated this event set as official case PURSUE R02, ratifying its documentary validity and its temporal-geographic pattern over nuclear infrastructure.

Why this case moved the needle
The green fireballs are the first documented wave of sustained anomalous events over U.S. nuclear infrastructure, and their importance to the corpus is twofold. First, the institutional scaffolding: these are not press anecdotes but reports generated by security-cleared personnel, escalated to military intelligence and the AFSWP, investigated by a first-rank meteoricist (La Paz) and by a dedicated instrumental project (Twinkle). Second, the geographic pattern: the concentration over the Albuquerque-Los Alamos corridor, and not over comparable skies lacking nuclear facilities, is the origin of the nuclear-UAP pattern that recurs at Malmstrom 1967, Minot 1968, Rendlesham 1980, and later cases.
Analytical honesty requires acknowledging that the mundane explanation covers much of the phenomenon. Green meteors exist and are common; New Mexico combines clear skies with a technical population made hypervigilant by the Cold War context, inflating the reporting rate; and Project Twinkle, though designed to capture hard evidence, closed without conclusive instrumental proof and leaned toward a natural cause. The figure of 209 reports almost certainly mixes genuine bolides with a difficult subset.
What keeps the case above outright dismissal is precisely the voice of the expert who should most have dismissed it: La Paz, a meteor specialist, examined the horizontal trajectories, the absence of fragments, and the anomalous color and concluded that subset was not meteoric. He did not prove what they were — his Soviet hypothesis was never confirmed — but his technical dissent, combined with the nuclear sensitivity of the site, is what justifies the case weighing 'modest' in both directions: it slightly weakens the purely natural explanation without asserting anomalous technology. AARO's modern ratification (PURSUE R02) confirms its documentary validity, not its nature.
