On January 7, 1948, around 13:20, Godman Field control (Fort Knox, Kentucky) received civilian and state patrol reports of a large bright object visible to the south. Lt. Carter Bashford confirmed it visually from the tower. Four F-51 Mustangs of the Kentucky Air National Guard returning to base were diverted to investigate.
Captain Thomas Mantell, flight leader, pursued the object in a climb above the safe operational ceiling of the F-51 without oxygen. He radioed: 'It appears to be a metallic object of tremendous size'. He continued climbing to approximately 25,000 feet, lost consciousness from hypoxia, and the F-51 entered an unrecoverable spin. Mantell died on impact near Franklin, Kentucky.
Project Sign investigated. The initial official explanation — the planet Venus — was dropped in subsequent years by Project Blue Book itself. The currently accepted hypothesis is a Skyhook balloon (a then-SECRET-classified network of very-high-altitude research balloons), whose trajectory that day is consistent with the pursuit. This was not confirmable by Project Sign in 1948 because the Skyhook program was ultra-secret.
