Part 01

The night in question

On the night of 5 November 1990, roughly between 19:00 and 19:10, thousands of people across France — from the Atlantic coast to the northeast — watched a slow, silent, luminous object cross the sky. Gendarmerie stations and newsrooms were overwhelmed with calls: within hours more than a thousand reports had piled up, one of the largest UFO waves in French history.

The descriptions converged on an unsettling shape: a large dark structure, triangular or boomerang-like, moving majestically from southwest to northeast with luminous points at its corners, trails behind it and, for some, lit 'windows'. Several witnesses insisted it made no sound at all; a few described interference on car radios and electrical devices. The national press led with the story, and for days the country debated whether it had watched a craft.

The explanation came quickly and from independent directions. That same night, satellite tracker Pierre Neirinck identified the phenomenon as re-entering space debris. Orbital data confirmed it: this was the re-entry of the third stage of a Soviet Proton rocket — launched days earlier from Baikonur to place the Gorizont 21 satellite in orbit — that disintegrated over France that evening. The train of glowing fragments, advancing in formation at high altitude, was reconstructed by witnesses' perception into a single solid, structured object: the 'triangle' was the fragmented trail read as the edges of a craft.

SEPRA — the official French body then led by Jean-Jacques Velasco — communicated the re-entry explanation to news agencies on 9 November. Velasco would reaffirm the diagnosis in a 1993 book with journalist Jean-Claude Bourret. A classic analysis by James Oberg documented, almost as a textbook, how a re-entry generates mass reports of 'structured craft'.

Why this case moved the needle

Trans-en-Provence and Valensole are France's physical-trace cases; this wave is the opposite, and just as valuable for it: the control case of the mundane narrative. It demonstrates, with thousands of sincere witnesses, that a mass event shaped like a 'giant silent triangle' can arise entirely from a single re-entry plus perceptual reconstruction. No hoax, no craft: known orbital physics misread at national scale.

Its analytical weight is calibration. It sets how much credit to grant mass triangle reports in other cases — the 1989 Belgian wave, the Phoenix Lights — where witness count is invoked as proof of anomaly. The lesson of 1990 is that witness count does not measure anomaly: it measures the visibility of the stimulus. A thousand people can be wrong at once, in complete good faith, before a real but prosaic object.

It is also an institutional success story. A state body (SEPRA), together with an amateur tracker and NORAD's orbital catalogues, had the correct explanation in days, not decades. It is the reverse of a cover-up: transparency and method solving the case almost in real time.

A thin residue remains — a minority of close-range sightings whose geometry or timing does not fit cleanly within the re-entry window — enough to keep it from being 100% closed, but not to sustain an exotic hypothesis. That is why its posterior leans strongly mundane with a margin of indeterminacy, and why the corpus files it as Tier S: not for being anomalous, but for its documentation, its scale, and its evidentiary value as an anchor for the most common explanation of the phenomenon. In a corpus where mundane misidentification already carries roughly half of the expected weight, a case this well attested is not a footnote but a load-bearing pillar of the baseline against which the genuine unknowns must be measured.
