Part 01

The years in question

Between November 29, 1989 and the spring of 1990, thousands of civilians in Belgium — concentrated at first in the Eupen region to the east — reported dark triangular objects with three bright lights at the vertices and a central pulsing red light, moving silently at low speed. The Belgian gendarmerie logged numerous sightings by its own officers, and the civilian association SOBEPS gathered hundreds of accounts. The Belgian Air Component received and processed some of those reports, giving the episode an unusual degree of institutional follow-up.

The critical event occurred on the night of March 30-31, 1990. Following alerts from gendarmerie in the Wavre region and a reported correlation with ground radars, two F-16s were scrambled from Beauvechain air base. Over the operation — which lasted roughly an hour — the pilots achieved several radar lock-ons (the figure usually cited is nine); in some of them the contact exhibited extreme speed and altitude changes, with values derived from the radar data that later analysis translated into accelerations of up to 46G and descents of several thousand feet in seconds. One nuance the sensationalist coverage tends to omit must be recorded: the F-16 pilots never obtained visual contact with the object, and the radar lock-ons were intermittent and of disputed interpretation.

General Wilfried De Brouwer, then chief of operations of the Belgian Air Component and later Major General, led the official follow-up and presented the data publicly and unclassified — a transparency rare among armed forces. De Brouwer has maintained for more than three decades that the episode was observed by reliable witnesses, recorded by radar, and that he found no satisfactory conventional explanation, without thereby asserting a conclusion about its nature.

Editorial honesty requires recording two serious counterweights. First, the most famous photograph of the wave — the sharp Petit-Rechain triangle, taken in April 1990 — was confessed to be a fake in 2011: its author, Patrick Maréchal, stated on Belgian television (RTL) that he had built a polystyrene model with lights and suspended it to photograph it. That confession does not nullify the remaining sightings, but it removed the case's most-cited photographic exhibit from the table. Second, physicists and skeptics have argued that the radar returns of the March 30-31 night may have stemmed from anomalous propagation echoes (thermal inversions, spurious or low-angle returns) rather than a solid object — precisely because no visual confirmation came from the fighters.

Why this case moved the needle

Despite the counterweights, the Belgian episode remains one of the best-documented UAP files by a NATO air force: mass civilian and gendarmerie testimony, military follow-up with published radar data, and an open-transparency institutional stance sustained for decades by a named general officer. It is the exact methodological contrast with the Pentagon's historical opacity: in Belgium the raw data and the doubts were made public rather than classified.

Calibration must weigh strength and fragility at once. The strength is the convergence of reliable testimony and radar record under transparent institutional follow-up. The fragility is twofold: the absence of visual contact from the F-16s leaves the radar lock-ons open to an anomalous-propagation reading, and the 2011 confession of the Petit-Rechain hoax showed that at least part of the iconic visual support was fabricated. That is why the corpus weighs this case as modest rather than strong support for advanced-platform hypotheses: the multi-sensor combination is real but not incontrovertible, and the 46G accelerations are quantities derived from disputed radar data, not direct measurements confirmed by simultaneous independent sensors. Presenting both faces — exemplary follow-up and vulnerable material evidence — is what keeps the case calibrated rather than inflated.
