Part 01

The night in question

On 11 July 1991, millions of Mexicans went out to watch the sky for the last total solar eclipse of the 20th century over the centre of the country: an exceptionally long totality —almost seven minutes— that darkened Mexico City in mid-afternoon. Among those filming the event, amateur videographer Guillermo Arreola captured a bright, seemingly metallic object, shaped like a dark-based disc, hovering motionless in the already-dimmed sky. He handed the tape to journalist Jaime Maussan, who aired it on his television news-magazine slot.

The broadcast had a snowball effect. Thousands of viewers called in to say they too had seen —and in many cases recorded— an identical or similar object that same day. Over time, footage was gathered from at least fifteen different people, taken from points more than a hundred kilometres apart in and around the metropolitan area. The object was described consistently: metallic, with a rounded top and a flat or dark base, sometimes with lights, hanging below the cloud layer. The coincidence of so many independent recordings was presented as proof that something physical and real had been there, and the episode came to be called «the best-documented mass sighting in history».

Later analysis, however, points strongly to a prosaic explanation. Sceptic and amateur astronomer Tim Printy reconstructed the positions of the celestial bodies during the eclipse with planetarium software and concluded that the object matched the planet Venus, highly visible in the darkened sky during totality. Venus that day was a partial crescent —hence the «disc» appearing rounded on top and flat on the bottom— and the CCD sensors of the era's camcorders generated an artificial «shadow» beneath any bright object, producing the illusion of a three-dimensional metallic body lit from above and shadowed below. That the object was seen from such distant points in the same part of the sky, far from indicating a nearby craft, is exactly what one expects of an astronomical body: a nearby object would show parallax between observers a hundred kilometres apart; Venus would not. And the object stayed motionless and «vanished» at the end of totality, when the sky brightened again and Venus stopped standing out.

Why this case moved the needle

The case matters less for what the object was —the evidence converges on Venus— than for what it triggered. The 1991 eclipse sighting is the birth certificate of the Latin American UFO-media ecosystem: it was the episode that turned Jaime Maussan into a national and then continental figure, and inaugurated a format —the television report that asks the public for their own videos— that fed a sustained «wave» between 1991 and 1993 and a content market still alive decades later (the corpus already records its institutional continuation in the 2023 Mexican Congress case). That is why it is catalogued: it is a network node, not proof of anomaly.

It is also a textbook study of two mundane mechanisms acting at once. First, astronomical misidentification: a bright planet in an anomalously dark sky, distorted by the optics and sensors of the era's home cameras, read as a structured craft. Second, cultural synchronisation: once television showed «the eclipse UFO» and asked for more tapes, thousands of people reinterpreted what they had filmed in light of that template, and the mass coincidence fed on itself. The detail most often cited as proof —the same object seen from distant points— is precisely the one that gives away its astronomical origin: the absence of parallax is the signature of something at planetary distance, not over the city.

For all that, the MECE split loads heavily toward the mundane and the case is tier B: massive and extraordinarily documented on video, but with a robust, testable prosaic explanation. Its value to the corpus is twofold and honest: to show how a phenomenon is explained by astronomy and camera artefacts, and how a media outlet can manufacture a «wave» out of a misread sky.
