The night in question
On 27 March 1974, the Betz family was investigating a small brush fire near their home on Fort George Island, on Florida's northeast coast, when they came across a curious metal sphere the size of a bowling ball: about 20 centimetres in diameter and nearly 10 kilos in weight, with a polished surface and no obvious markings. They picked it up as a curiosity and took it home.
What triggered the object's fame happened days later. By the family's account, while young Terry Betz was playing the guitar, the sphere seemed to react to the sound by emitting a kind of hum or throbbing. More striking still, they claimed the ball rolled across the floor apparently on its own, stopped and changed direction, as if it had will or an internal energy source. The story, spread by the local and then national press, turned the 'Betz sphere' into a media phenomenon amid the 1970s' ferment of paranormal mysteries; speculation about alien technology or a spy device was not lacking.
The explanation, however, proved prosaic and convergent. In June 1974, a group of scientists examined the sphere and concluded it was made of a high-quality terrestrial stainless steel —a magnetic ferrous alloy of type #431, resistant to corrosion and heat. Already in April, the U.S. Navy had pointed out that the object was nothing more than a large ball bearing used as a check valve in the piping system of some chemical plant, and the Miami Herald reported an almost identical ball in Jacksonville identified as part of a valve from a paper mill; an industrial supplier displayed a Bell & Howell stainless steel ball of the same dimensions. As for the 'movement', skeptical analyses noted that the sphere sat still on display for nearly two weeks and that, being almost perfectly balanced, the slightest tilt of the house's old, uneven stone floor was enough to make it roll or change course. The enigma dissolved into an industrial valve ball on a crooked floor.

Why this case moved the needle
The Betz sphere matters to the corpus as one of its most instructive calibration anchors in the 'anomalous physical object' category: a case that gathered all the ingredients of a technological mystery —an inexplicable metal object that seemed to move on its own, react to sound and defy household physics— and that, on examination, proved entirely mundane. That is why its posterior is almost entirely mundane/misid, with barely a trace of indeterminacy. The explanation is closed on two fronts: the composition (industrial stainless steel #431, with analogues identified as valve balls from chemical plants and paper mills) and the behavior (an almost perfectly balanced sphere rolls and 'changes direction' with the slightest slope of an old floor, and did not move when simply on display). No element requires an internal energy source or an anomalous origin. The case's usefulness to the corpus is one of contrast: it shows how perception —reinforced by expectation and by a subtle but real physical cause (an uneven floor)— can turn an ordinary industrial object into a prodigy, and why the discipline of demanding material analysis and a controlled behavior test is what dissolves most of these 'impossible objects'.
