The night in question
On the night of July 14, 1952, during that summer's intense sighting wave —the same that a few days later would culminate in the famous radar events over Washington— a Pan American World Airways DC-4 was flying from New York to Miami with ten passengers and a crew of three. Captain F. V. Koepke was in command; First Officer William B. Nash and Second Officer William H. Fortenberry were in the cockpit. The aircraft was cruising at about 8,000 feet over Chesapeake Bay, approaching Norfolk, Virginia, with the autopilot engaged, when Nash and Fortenberry saw a formation of six disc-shaped objects appear below their plane, glowing with an intense red-orange light and showing sharp edges.
Per their report —detailed and consistent between the two— the discs flew in line, executed a near-instantaneous flip (they 'turned' edge-on), were joined by two more discs to total eight, and the whole group accelerated, climbed and dimmed before vanishing. The pilots' size and speed estimates implied extreme dynamics, with speeds on the order of thousands of kilometers per hour and an acute-angle turn. The incident occurred barely three months after the start of Project Blue Book; Blue Book officers, after interviewing the pilots in detail, classified the case as 'unidentified'.
Over the years several skeptical explanations were proposed —ground lights distorted by haze, windshield reflections, fireflies in the cockpit, or a mirage of Venus— attributions the pilots rejected in detail, arguing that the objects passed below the aircraft's visual horizon (between the DC-4 and the lit ground of Norfolk), which is incompatible with terrestrial or astronomical lights. It enters the corpus as a classic Tier A double-qualified-witness case: two experienced commercial pilots, a coinciding report and an institutional record.

Why this case moved the needle
It is one of the most solid double-commercial-pilot cases of the 1952 wave: two professional witnesses with the same detailed observation, logged by Blue Book as 'unidentified' barely weeks before the same wave produced the Washington radar incidents. Its value lies in the quality and agreement of the witnesses —pilots trained to judge motion, distance and altitude— on a maneuver (instantaneous flip, formation, acceleration) hard to reconcile with a trivial light phenomenon. The detail most resistant to scrutiny is the geometry: the pilots placed the objects below the aircraft, which rules out astronomical candidates (Venus) from the start and weakens the reflection hypotheses.
Its limit, which the corpus calibration does not hide, is that it is a purely visual case, with no radar record or independent instrument to corroborate size, distance or speed. All the dramatic speed figures are witness estimates from an angular size whose real distance was never determined — and distance-estimation errors in nighttime sightings are the classic source of apparently impossible speeds. That is why the case enters as Tier A for the quality and agreement of the witnesses and for the institutional 'unidentified' record, not for instrumental evidence. The contribution to the corpus is of the record type: two qualified professionals Blue Book could not explain strain the trivial-misidentification reading, but the absence of a second data channel prevents elevating the case beyond a minimal contribution.
The case also matters as a datum about the 1952 wave as a whole. That summer produced the densest concentration of credible sightings in the entire Blue Book record, peaking in the radar-and-visual events over Washington National Airport later in July — a context in which the air defense system itself was registering anomalies. Nash-Fortenberry is one of the cleaner pilot reports embedded in that wave: trained observers, a coherent and jointly-told account, and an official 'unidentified' verdict from an investigation that had every institutional incentive to find a conventional explanation. Its enduring citation in the literature rests less on any single extraordinary feature than on the difficulty of dismissing two professionals who described the same below-horizon maneuver in detail and rejected, point by point, the explanations later offered to them. The corpus treats it accordingly: a solid, well-attested visual report that strains the trivial-misidentification reading without, on its own, settling anything.
