The night in question
On the night of November 23, 1953, amid the Cold War's defensive tension over the Great Lakes, Air Defense Command (ADC) detected an unidentified radar return flying over Lake Superior, near the restricted zone of the Soo Locks. From Kinross Air Force Base (Michigan) an all-weather F-89C Scorpion interceptor of the 433rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron was scrambled, crewed by First Lt. Felix Moncla (pilot) and Second Lt. Robert L. Wilson (radar operator), to identify the target, reported moving at roughly 800 km/h.
ADC ground controllers tracked on radar as the F-89 was vectored toward the object and closed the distance at high speed. After about 30 minutes of pursuit, some 110 km off Keweenaw Point, the fighter descended to approach and, at the moment of interception, the two returns —the interceptor and the object— merged into a single blip on the screen. The combined blip continued briefly on its course and then the F-89 vanished: it did not answer radio calls, did not reappear on radar and was never found, neither aircraft nor bodies, despite an extensive air and naval search over the lake.
The USAF offered explanations that shifted over the years and that were, moreover, mutually contradictory. One version held that the pursued return was a Canadian transport aircraft (cited as a C-47/DC-3 and later as a fighter or an RCAF Avro Lancaster) that had strayed off course; Canadian authorities denied having any aircraft at that position and time. The Moncla family was given different explanations: one representative said the F-89 had crashed into the lake after the pilot suffered vertigo, another that it had exploded in flight. The soberest prosaic explanation —that Moncla, flying at night and low over a dark, horizonless lake, suffered spatial disorientation (vertigo) and plunged into the water, while the 'merging of returns' was a radar-resolution artifact when two targets cross at close range— is coherent and is the one skeptics hold; but no official version was conclusive nor reconciled the contradictions. The file enters the corpus as a Tier A case: a military event fully recorded by radar and by the documented loss of an aircraft and its crew, with conflicting official explanations and a core —the merging of returns followed by total disappearance— left definitively unresolved.

Why this case moved the needle
It is one of the most serious military cases of the Blue Book era because it is not merely a sighting: there is a lost aircraft, two crew dead, an ADC ground-radar track and an inescapable institutional record. What elevates the file is not a claim about the object's nature —undetermined— but the combination of a hard fact (the total, never-explained loss of an interceptor and its crew) with the documented inconsistency of the official response. The central detail —the fighter's and the target's returns merging just before the disappearance— never received a single, consistent explanation, and the official versions (Canadian aircraft, vertigo, explosion) contradicted each other while Canada denied the contact.
Editorial honesty requires stating that a complete and plausible prosaic hypothesis exists: nighttime spatial disorientation over the lake and a combined blip as a radar-resolution artifact. That reading requires nothing exotic and is probably the most economical. But it remains an inference, not a finding: with no wreckage, no flight recorder and official explanations that cancelled one another, the case stays formally open. Tier A for the gravity and institutional record (radar plus documented loss), not for evidence of the target's nature. Its contribution to the corpus is one of calibration: it shows how much an event can weigh by its documentary solidity even when its interpretation remains undetermined.
