On the night of 7 July 2010, an unidentified luminous object caused the closure of Hangzhou's Xiaoshan International Airport for about an hour; several flights were diverted or delayed and thousands of passengers were affected. Authorities investigated and hinted at a link to undisclosed military activity; there was never a conclusive public explanation, and the most widely circulated photographs are consistent with a long-exposure trail of an aircraft.

Part 01

The night in question

Around 8:45 PM on 7 July 2010, the crew of a flight about to take off from Hangzhou's Xiaoshan International Airport (Zhejiang province) reported an unidentified luminous object in the sky, and ground staff corroborated it. As a precaution, airport authorities activated an emergency plan and suspended operations: the closure lasted about one hour and five minutes, with around twelve flights diverted to nearby airports (reports mention Ningbo and Wuxi) and some six delayed, affecting thousands of passengers in all. For a country where an airport closure is major news, the episode had enormous media impact, and it was part of a run of reported sightings in China that summer.

Several photographs circulated; the most famous shows a curved luminous streak with a kind of tail, over the city's night skyline. The investigation was joint between the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and the regional military command's air force; a key fact is that radar failed to fix the object's position. Authorities said they had identified the cause but handled the detail with reserve: the state newspaper China Daily quoted a source linking the object to a military activity, without any closed official explanation being published. Later, different experts offered divergent readings: specialists from the Beijing Planetarium concluded it was an aircraft, while a subsequent panel weighed the afterglow of a civilian aircraft, debris from a military test, or aerial advertising as possible candidates; none was officially confirmed.

The case should be read for what it is and is not. What is solid and verifiable is institutional: the airport did close and there was a documented operational response with flight figures. The anomalous part —the 'object'— is much weaker: the most circulated images are perfectly consistent with the long-exposure trail of an aircraft or rocket, a common nighttime photographic artifact, and the fact that radar detected nothing concrete points to a visual phenomenon rather than a solid target. Hangzhou's value for the corpus is being China's flagship case —a huge, opaque country on the matter— and, at the same time, a good example of how a real event (the closure) and fragile evidence (the photo) combine in public perception.

Why this case moved the needle

Hangzhou matters for two almost opposite reasons. On one hand, it is China's gateway into the corpus: the world's most populous country, with an opaque state apparatus, yields few verifiable cases, and this one —by the magnitude of the airport closure and its coverage— is the most institutionally solid. On the other, it is a reminder of discipline: a real operational event (closure, diverted flights) does not make the visual evidence anomalous, which here is weak and consistent with prosaic explanations. It enters as Tier B precisely because of that asymmetry —strong institutional response, weak object— and with the explicit caution that 'they closed the airport' is not the same as 'there was a craft'. The file is also a good reminder of how informational opacity manufactures mystery: in a system where military activity and investigation details are not published, official silence is read as confirmation of something extraordinary, when the most likely answer, in light of the authorities' own hints and the radar failure, is a conventional cause —air traffic, a test, or a photographic artifact— that simply was never publicly clarified. The file's caution does not deny that something triggered the closure; it denies that that something should be read as anomalous.
