On the nights of 26 and 27 June 1959, at the Anglican mission of Boianai (Papua New Guinea), the Reverend William Booth Gill and some three dozen people —including teachers and a medical assistant— observed a large disc-shaped craft with humanoid figures on its upper part. According to the account, the figures appeared to perform tasks; when the witnesses waved, the figures waved back. Gill collected signed statements. It is one of the most witnessed and best-attested entity reports in ufological history.

The night in question
On 26 June 1959, around 6:45 p.m., at the Anglican mission of Boianai, on the shore of Goodenough Bay in eastern Papua New Guinea, the Reverend William Booth Gill —an Australian, university-educated missionary— walked out of the mission house and saw a bright white light in the western sky, over the sea. Gill, who knew the region's sky, was explicit on a point that would later prove decisive: that same night he identified Venus as a separate object, and described the luminous object as something distinct and far brighter. On a large, disc-shaped form, four humanoid-looking figures could be made out, appearing and disappearing from the upper deck as if busy with some task; from time to time a bluish beam of light projected upward. The long-lasting sighting was witnessed by some three dozen mission witnesses —accounts usually cite about 37 besides Gill— including teachers and a medical assistant.
The following night, 27 June, the phenomenon repeated. This time Gill, now familiar with what he was seeing, did something simple and decisive: he raised his arm and waved at the figures. To the group's astonishment, one of the figures waved back. Gill persisted, several people joined in waving, and the figures responded by waving their arms; when someone signaled with a flashlight, the object seemed to react with a swaying motion. Strikingly, as night fell and the mission's dinner hour approached, the group simply went inside to eat —a detail of mundanity that many analysts read as a sign of authenticity rather than dramatic invention. The episode ended without the craft being identified.
Gill documented the case with unusual rigor for the time: he wrote a detailed report and gathered statements signed by a good portion of the witnesses, making Boianai one of the best-attested entity encounters. The main skeptical objection —raised by astronomer Donald Menzel, the great debunker of his day— held that Gill, nearsighted, had observed the planet Venus without his corrective lenses. The objection is weak for several converging reasons: in a 1973 letter to J. Allen Hynek, Gill clarified that he wore glasses and put them on automatically to see at distance, a point corroborated by Fred Beckman, a Hynek associate who traveled to Boianai; Gill had pointed out Venus as a separate object that same night; and Venus does not present moving figures on a 'deck'. In 1973, Hynek himself traveled to Australia and Papua New Guinea, located six of the witnesses —who reaffirmed Gill's version— and concluded that, while the smaller objects could be attributed to bright stars or planets, the primary object could not: its size and absence of movement over hours ruled out an astronomical explanation. Even so, it should be framed for what it is: a close encounter of the third kind, extraordinary and witnessed by many, but testimonial, with no sensor or physical trace.

Why this case moved the needle
The Father Gill case is, in its category, the strongest that exists: a close encounter of the third kind with dozens of sober, credible witnesses —led by a university-educated clergyman— and with something almost unique in casework, an apparent interaction (the returned wave) sustained over two nights and backed by signed statements. That is why it has been cited for decades as one of the best 'occupant' reports. And that is precisely why it sharply marks the ceiling of its type: however extraordinary and witnessed by many, it remains a purely testimonial case, with no radar, photograph or material trace. It enters as Tier B —documented folklore of very high testimonial quality— with that explicit frontier: enormous historical and human weight, zero hard evidence.
