On 25 September 1975, at 7:30 PM, a Uruguayan Air Force FH-227 on PLUNA service was flying from Asunción to Montevideo at 14,000 feet. After overflying Monte Caseros, the pilot saw a very bright yellowish-white light that rose to his altitude and accompanied him at 3–5 miles. When he turned on the landing light, the object approached; when he turned it off, it withdrew —and during that approach a strong smell of burnt cable was felt in the cabin, with no electrical fault found—. The photographs were analyzed by CRIDOVNI. It is one of Uruguay's most cited aviation cases.

The night in question
On 25 September 1975, at 7:30 PM, a Fairchild FH-227 of the Uruguayan Air Force, on service for the state airline PLUNA, was covering the route between Asunción, Paraguay and Montevideo. It was flying at 14,000 feet (about 4,300 meters) and a cruise speed of 250 knots (around 450 km/h). Well into the night, after overflying the Monte Caseros area —on the border between Argentina and northern Uruguay, toward Artigas—, the pilot noticed to his left and below, near the ground, a yellowish, almost white, very bright light that stood out against the night landscape.
The light did not stay on the ground: it began to ascend and, about five minutes later, had positioned itself at the aircraft's altitude, an estimated 3 to 5 miles away, from where it accompanied the uniform movement of the Uruguayan aircraft. To check whether the object reacted to a stimulus, the pilot made a deliberate decision: he turned on the aircraft's left landing light. He immediately observed the light approach significantly, a tendency that ceased —and reversed, the object returning to its previous position or size— when the pilot turned it off. This apparent correlation between the aircraft's light and the object's movement is the feature that has made the case famous, and also the hardest to assess, because a genuine interactive response and a temporal coincidence produce, from the cockpit, exactly the same impression. During the brief approach, the crew perceived a strong smell of burnt cable in the cabin, like that of an overheated electrical connection; however, subsequent checks of the systems found no fault to explain it.
The episode left photographs, which were sent to CRIDOVNI (Commission for Receiving and Investigating Reports of Unidentified Flying Objects) of the Uruguayan Air Force for analysis. It is worth placing the chronology precisely: the sighting predates the commission itself, since CRIDOVNI was only formalized in 1979 —so the case was precisely the kind that helped justify the creation of an official window—. It is one of the country's most cited aviation sightings: it combines a qualified witness (a professional pilot), long duration, apparently interactive behavior, a reported physical effect in the cabin and a photographic record that the state took the trouble to study formally.

Why this case moved the needle
The FH-227 case is the sighting-event Uruguay was missing in the corpus, and one of the strongest in its casework. It combines, in a single episode, several of the elements that raise the quality of a report: a professional witness —a trained pilot, used to reading lights, traffic and atmospheric phenomena from the cockpit—, a long duration that rules out the fleeting flash, a photographic record, apparently interactive behavior and a physical effect reported aboard. It is the kind of case that warrants careful analysis rather than automatic dismissal.
That said, analytic honesty requires dismantling the apparent extraordinariness of each element. The 'interactivity' —the light approaching when the landing light is turned on and withdrawing when it is turned off— is the most suggestive feature, but also the most fragile: with two or three on-off cycles, a coincidence between the pilot's maneuver and an object that was oscillating in distance anyway produces exactly the same impression as a deliberate response, with no way to tell one from the other from the cockpit. The smell of burnt cable with no electrical fault found is striking, but smells have many mundane causes, and the absence of a found fault is not equivalent to the presence of an exotic cause. And there was no radar confirmation or material recovery. The whole sustains that there was a genuine anomaly which a serious pilot reported and the state studied, without proving its nature — and that is precisely its place in the corpus: it was among the reports that pushed the Uruguayan Air Force to create CRIDOVNI four years later. Alongside the commission and its researchers —among them Milton Hourcade, founder of CIOVI (1958) and a pioneer of the rigorous study of the phenomenon in Uruguay—, it completes Uruguay's piece of the corpus.
