In June 2024, an infrared sensor aboard a U.S. military platform recorded 21 seconds of footage over waters off the United Arab Emirates. Per AARO's official record, it was U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) that submitted the report — an administratively unusual detail, given that the United Arab Emirates falls within Central Command's (CENTCOM) geographic area of responsibility, not NORTHCOM's. The record does not explain the discrepancy; it may reflect a cataloguing error within AARO's own system, or a platform administratively assigned to NORTHCOM temporarily operating in the region.

The mission report accompanying the video, identified as DoW-UAP-D8, describes the object with a level of detail above most files in the corpus: it consists of 'an object with a vertical pole or bar attached to the bottom of the object.' Notably, it is one of the few reports in the corpus where the observer himself —unprompted— offered a possible mundane explanation: 'the UAP may instead be a reflection of an object in the water.'

AARO's official timestamped visual description is consistent with both readings: for the full 21 seconds, 'an area of contrast visually resembling an inverted teardrop, with a vertically linear trailing mass suspended below, remains generally within the center of the sensor field-of-view.' The description mentions no movement, displacement, or change in shape — the object stays static in frame for the entire recording, a detail compatible with either a suspended object or a stationary reflection on the water's surface.

Why this case moved the needle

This file's value lies in something uncommon within the corpus: the observer himself, at the time of the report, already considered and wrote down a mundane alternative to what he was seeing. That does not happen with most files from this program, where the witness describes the phenomenon without offering an explanation, leaving the entire interpretive burden to a later analyst. Here, whoever was in front of the sensor considered the reflection hypothesis before anyone raised it — a sign of analytical sobriety at the report's very origin.

The instrumental description —a static object, with no movement detected during the 21 seconds— is exactly what would be expected from a reflection on the water's surface: no self-propelled displacement, no change in shape, sustained while the observing platform (or the object generating the reflection) remains relatively stable. A physical object suspended in the air with that geometry —an inverted teardrop shape with a hanging pole— could also remain static if it were, for example, a balloon with a payload or hanging ballast seen from a distance and angle that doesn't reveal subtle movement.

The detail of the NORTHCOM-instead-of-CENTCOM attribution, while minor, is a reminder that even the PURSUE program's institutional metadata is not free of cataloguing inconsistencies — an added note of caution when reading any record in this corpus as a perfectly reliable document in every field, even when the chain of custody (unlike the Release 02 batch; see ) is institutionally traceable.
