United States.Chris Bledsoe (Cape Fear River)

On January 8, 2007, Chris Bledsoe Sr. (a construction contractor and commercial pilot) was fishing with his 17-year-old son, Chris Bledsoe Jr., and three men who worked for him as framing subcontractors (Donny Ackerman, Gene Robinson and David McDonald) on the banks of the Cape Fear River, outside Fayetteville, North Carolina. By his account, Bledsoe walked about 70 meters from the group seeking a moment of solitude when he saw two bright orange objects (which he described as 'two setting suns' with fire shooting off them) joined by a third that 'took its place' alongside the other two. Per the summary of the MUFON investigation, the objects descended and appeared to land some 100-150 yards away, across the river. The frightened witnesses fled the area.

A time discrepancy then arose that became central to the case: Bledsoe estimated he had been away from the group for about 20 minutes, while his companions reported an absence of 3 to 4 hours. His son went looking for him after waiting two hours and was himself missing for another two hours before reappearing. That same night, per the family's account, two further episodes occurred: the son said he was watched and paralyzed by small creatures in the woods near the house, and the father described an encounter on his property with a 'glass-like' entity roughly a meter tall with red eyes.

The report Bledsoe himself filed shortly afterwards with MUFON's case system, reproduced by researcher Lon Strickler, differs from that version on important points. In it he says the group had spent the afternoon fishing; that he walked up the track alone and saw three large orange balls come down and hover over the trees 'maybe a mile away or closer', and watched them for ten to fifteen minutes before going back; that his son came out of the woods saying he had been hiding from 'aliens'; that the five then saw six to eight lights converge in the sky and three white lights come down across the river; that as they fled they saw a white egg-shaped object with spikes hovering about 20 feet over the road; that other drivers had stopped to look at lights; and that, back home, around 1 or 2 a.m., he and his son saw by the kennel a figure at most four feet tall, with a clear covering and what looked like red goggles. That report mentions no lost hours; it says the family had the two of them committed to a psychiatric hospital for two days, and that his father later told him he had heard on the radio that a Soviet satellite had fallen that night. Jonathan McDowell's GCAT catalogue records the re-entry, on 8 January 2007, of the third stage of a Soviet Tsiklon-3 rocket (1990-104B, 1,600 kg), with no time or place, so it is not enough to link it to what was seen. In it Bledsoe offered to take a polygraph and be hypnotized.

The case reached MUFON (Mutual UFO Network), the largest civilian UFO-investigation organization in the United States, which interviewed all five witnesses separately. On July 14, 2008 (a year and a half after the event) Dr. Michael O'Connell conducted a regressive hypnosis session with Bledsoe that produced an abduction-type narrative involving tall beings, a methodologically disputed component given that hypnotic recall is susceptible to confabulation and interviewer suggestion. A clinical social worker, Debbie Gioia, performed a psychiatric evaluation and concluded Bledsoe was 'of sound mind'. A retired FBI polygraph examiner, Bob DrDak, administered a test that showed signs of 'deception' on some of the answers, a result that, as with the Travis Walton case, does not settle the matter on its own, since polygraph reliability as a fact-validator is itself technically disputed.

From that initial incident, Bledsoe built a sustained public career: the book 'UFO of God', documentary appearances, and a conference circuit (UFO Congress, Contact in the Desert, the Shawn Ryan Show podcast) where he describes recurring contact with luminous 'orbs' (he claims to have recorded over 2,000 videos of the phenomenon over his property) and with a female entity he calls 'the Lady'. On that same circuit he has repeatedly claimed NASA 'started looking into his claims in 2008 and kept doing so for around eight years', citing a former SRI physicist historically tied to the AATIP program (Hal Puthoff) and a former CIA officer (Jim Semivan, who wrote the foreword to his book) as part of that 'institutional investigator' circle. None of these claims is backed by an official NASA document, a public statement naming a responsible official, or any mention of Bledsoe in NASA's September 2023 UAP Independent Study Team report, the only publicly documented NASA institutional process on UAP from that period. The sources are entirely Bledsoe himself and low-verifiability secondary outlets that reproduce his account without cross-checking it.

The case sharply illustrates the difference between a real civilian investigation (MUFON interviewed all five witnesses, commissioned a psychiatric evaluation and a polygraph, documented the time discrepancy) and the INSTITUTIONAL ANCHORING that Bledsoe publicly claims and that could not be verified. The project's editorial rule requires not taking government-link claims at face value without a nameable primary source; here, a targeted search of the NASA UAP Independent Study Team report (Sept. 2023, 16 experts, chaired by David Spergel) turned up no mention of Bledsoe, and the rest of the 'NASA investigation' evidence circles back to Bledsoe himself and outlets that cite him without independent verification. It is, in that sense, the same caution pattern that already forced a correction to the 'official Department of War title' framing on several PURSUE videos: an eloquent name or citation is not the same as confirmed institutional provenance.

Within the incident itself, the 2008 polygraph's 'deception' finding (though technically disputed as a validator) is a data point the case cannot ignore, especially read alongside the economic incentive that followed: a book, documentaries and a paid conference circuit that began after the initial report, the same late-economic-motive pattern skeptical literature flagged in the Travis Walton case. In favor of taking it seriously as a reported phenomenon, not as proven fraud, are the plurality of witnesses (five people, not just Bledsoe, though they were together and knew each other) and a formal psychiatric evaluation that found no pathology. The result is a multi-witness case and with documented civilian investigation, but without verifiable government institutional corroboration and with a central component (the abduction narrative) derived from hypnosis, the weakest type of evidence.
