The night in question
On the morning of 18 January 1994, several residents of the village of Cando, in the municipality of A Estrada (Pontevedra, Galicia), witnessed the passage of a fireball that crossed the sky for nearly a minute. The luminous phenomenon alone would have remained just another bolide sighting, were it not for what was found afterward on the ground. The village, in rural Galicia near A Estrada, was a quiet setting unlikely to breed confusion: the sighting occurred in full winter-morning light, with several independent witnesses agreeing on the object's trajectory and unusually long duration.
A local resident called the University of Santiago de Compostela to report a strange gouge that had appeared on a hillside near the village. On inspecting it, investigators found a notable mark: up to about 200 cubic metres of terrain were missing, and several trees had been torn out and displaced some 100 metres down the slope. The scene evoked an explosion or an impact, but with a baffling absence: no fragments, meteorite remains or shrapnel of any kind appeared. That combination —large energy released, evident physical damage and zero recoverable material— led the episode to be described as a 'small Tunguska', in reference to the famous 1908 Siberian event.
The proposed explanations remained within the natural domain, with two main hypotheses. The first, the most intuitive given the fireball, is the fall of a meteorite that would have excavated the hillside; the problem is the lack of fragments. The second, put forward by astronomer Zdeněk Ceplecha, of the Ondřejov Observatory (Czech Republic), proposes that the gouge may have been due to the sudden bursting of subterranean gases which, abruptly expelling the surface layer of terrain, vented into the air —a geophysical mechanism that would explain both the crater and the absence of a meteorite, and which connects directly to the hypotheses considered for the Sasovo explosion in Russia. Speculation about secret military operations also circulated, fed by the proximity of air routes and by the absence of a classic impact crater. The case was the subject of a formal study published in the specialized scientific literature (Meteoritics & Planetary Science, 1998), which documented the gouge's morphology and the possible causes without reaching a single verdict. No explanation prevailed conclusively, and the episode remained a small Spanish geophysical anomaly without formal closure, cited ever since as a European reference case of ground damage associated with a bolide with no recovered meteorite.

Why this case moved the needle
Cando matters to the corpus as a small-scale replica —on European soil— of the problem posed by Tunguska and Sasovo: an event that combines an aerial luminous phenomenon with considerable physical ground damage and yet leaves none of the material one would expect. Its value is that it reinforces, with a third independent case, that there exists a class of genuine terrestrial anomalies —gouges, localized devastation, bolides— whose exact cause may remain undetermined without that implying anything extraordinary in the ufological sense.
That is why the posterior loads onto the mundane/natural narrative, with appreciable indeterminacy falling on the mechanism, not on the terrestrial nature of the event. The two competing hypotheses —meteorite impact and subterranean gas burst— are both prosaic; the debate is which one, and the lack of fragments tilts the balance toward Ceplecha's geophysical explanation, the same family of mechanisms (sudden gas emissions on continental platforms) invoked for Sasovo. The small residual mass acknowledges that the case was not closed with a single verdict. In the corpus, Cando serves a coherence function: alongside Tunguska, Chelyabinsk and Sasovo, it delimits a 'genre' of natural energetic events worth characterizing well, precisely so as not to mistake a bolide or a gas vent for an anomalous manifestation.
