On the evening of November 2, 1971, near Delphos (Kansas), Ronald Johnson (16) said he saw a mushroom-shaped object about 3 meters across, with multicolored lights, hovering low over the family farm. After it rose, it left a ring on the ground that glowed in the dark —enough, witnesses said, to read a newspaper by— and that persisted until the next night. The ring soil became discolored and hydrophobic: water would not penetrate it. It is one of the best-documented physical-trace (CE2) cases: the soil was preserved and analyzed for decades, retaining its hydrophobic character, and a Kansas State University team reproduced the effect. A strong prosaic explanation is a fungal 'fairy ring,' which also produces hydrophobic soil.

The night in question
Around 7:00 p.m. on November 2, 1971, 16-year-old Ronald Johnson was tending sheep on his family's farm near Delphos, in Ottawa County, Kansas, when he said he saw a mushroom-shaped object, about 3 meters across (nine feet in the original report), covered in multicolored lights, humming as it hovered a little over half a meter off the ground, about 25 meters from him. After an intense glow and a high-pitched sound, the object rose and moved off. Ron was momentarily blinded for a while and reported numbness; when he called his parents, Durel and Erma Johnson, the family found at the spot a ring of soil glowing in the dark and luminescence on nearby trees.
The ring's glow was intense enough that, the Johnsons said, one could read a newspaper by it; one of the photographs they took that night, they say, needed no flash. The glow lasted until the next night. More striking still was the soil's behavior: inside the ring it was discolored, lighter, and became hydrophobic —water slid off without penetrating, and the ground stayed dry to a depth of about 30 cm— a property the samples retained for decades.
The case, investigated by ufologists and later re-examined by several teams, became one of the most studied physical-trace files (close encounter of the second kind, CE2) in history, even winning a National Enquirer award at the time. The most detailed chemical analysis was carried out by Dr. Erol Faruk, a researcher at the University of Nottingham, who identified in the ring soil a non-volatile organic compound —on the order of 2-3 % by weight— responsible for the hydrophobic effect and, per his work, luminescent. The strongest prosaic explanation is a fungal 'fairy ring': certain soil fungi generate circular rings and leave the ground hydrophobic through the compounds they secrete, an effect that has been reproduced and studied in the lab. That hypothesis covers the ring shape and the hydrophobicity well, but fits less well with the persistent glow and with the object sighting that preceded the ring. The case remained ambiguous: a real, durable physical trace, a partial natural candidate, and a single central teenage witness with family corroboration.

Why this case moved the needle
It is one of the best-documented and most durable physical-trace (CE2) cases in the corpus: unlike a sighting that fades, it left a measurable soil sample that retained anomalous properties —discoloration and hydrophobicity— for decades and remains under analysis. Its value is methodological: it shows what can and cannot be drawn from a physical trace. The hydrophobicity and ring shape have a serious prosaic candidate —a reproducible fungal fairy ring— which lowers the anomalous load; but the persistent glow and the object sighting do not fit cleanly into that explanation. Faruk's chemical re-analysis adds an interesting twist: the organic compound that makes the soil hydrophobic would, per his work, also be responsible for the luminescence, which could reconcile the glow with a chemical-biological rather than exotic origin. That very possibility shows why the case does not rise to Tier S: the closer chemistry comes to explaining the trace, the weaker the need for an anomalous cause, and the object sighting rests on a single teenager. Tier A for the quality and permanence of the physical evidence and its scientific re-analysis; moderate probability because the best natural candidate covers much —though not all— of the phenomenon, and the central testimony is from a single observer with family corroboration.
