Part 01

The night in question

The Aztec case, sometimes called 'the other Roswell', was born in the columns of Variety journalist Frank Scully in 1949 and reached mass circulation with his 1950 book 'Behind the Flying Saucers'. According to Scully, in March 1948 an unidentified craft had crashed near Aztec, in northwestern New Mexico, and the military had recovered the craft with sixteen humanoid bodies inside. The account was spectacular and detailed: the craft was about 99 feet (30 m) in diameter —the largest 'saucer' described to date— supposedly came from Venus, worked on 'magnetic principles', and each of its dimensions was 'divisible by nine'; its crew were said to have carried concentrated food wafers and 'heavy water' to drink.

Behind that narrative was, in reality, a swindle. Scully's sources were two men, Silas M. Newton and Leo A. GeBauer, who during the 1940s and 1950s traveled the U.S. Southwest trying to sell devices known in the oil industry as 'doodlebugs', which they claimed could locate oil, gas and gold. Their sales pitch was that these devices were based on 'alien technology' recovered from the crashed saucer: the Aztec story was, essentially, the advertising wrapper for a financial con.

The takedown came through investigative journalism. Reporter J. P. Cahn, of the San Francisco Chronicle, asked the con men for a sample of the 'alien' metal from their devices; the piece they handed over turned out to be ordinary aluminum. In 1952, True magazine published the exposure of the hoax, and by the mid-1950s the case was widely discredited; Newton and GeBauer would face fraud charges. Even so, the Aztec story has periodically resurfaced in ufological literature, recycled by authors who defend a real core behind the con, without any verifiable physical, documentary or testimonial evidence of a crash ever appearing.

Why this case moved the needle

Aztec matters to the corpus as the crash-retrieval case that is actually resolved, and so it functions as a calibration anchor for the whole family of 'crashed craft and recovered bodies' accounts —Roswell included. Its value is twofold: it cleanly documents the mechanism by which a retrieval story is born and spreads (a source with a financial incentive, a credulous journalist, a hit book), and it also records how it is dismantled (the journalism that asks for the physical sample and gets aluminum). In a corpus that takes the nohumano_encubierto narrative seriously, Aztec is the indispensable reminder that this narrative has, at least once, a provenly fraudulent origin.

That is why the posterior loads overwhelmingly onto the mundane/natural narrative in its hoax variant. The chain is conclusive: the sources were con men with a 'doodlebug' swindle to sell, the 'alien metal' turned out to be aluminum, the hoax was exposed in the press and led to criminal charges, and not the slightest material or documentary trace of the alleged crash ever appeared. The minimal mass of indeterminacy reflects not serious doubt about the hoax but the impossibility of proving an absolute negative about what may have happened in the desert in 1948. The contrast with Roswell is deliberately instructive: it shows that two accounts of almost identical structure can have opposite epistemic status depending on the evidence, and that the 'crash-retrieval' label does not by itself confer credibility. In the corpus, Aztec is the case that teaches one to ask for the metal sample before believing in the craft.
