On May 11, 1950, at a farm near McMinnville (Oregon), Evelyn Trent said she saw a metallic, disc-shaped, slow-moving object approaching; her husband Paul took two photographs that rank among the most analyzed UAP images in history. In 1968, physicist William K. Hartmann studied them for the Condon Report and concluded they were consistent with the testimony: an extraordinary, real object flying at a distance —one of the few cases the committee could not discredit. Later analyses (Sheaffer, IPACO) have argued for a small model hung from a wire. The case remains without an agreed resolution: for some, the best photographic evidence in the U.S. corpus; for others, a skillful domestic hoax.

Institutional evidence: multiple verifiable witnesses or official documentation. The night in question
At dusk on May 11, 1950, Evelyn Trent was walking back to her house after feeding rabbits at the family farm in Yamhill County, near McMinnville, Oregon, when she said she saw a metallic, slow, disc-shaped object approaching from the northeast. She called her husband Paul, who went into the house for the camera and managed two photographs of the object before it moved off to the west. The images show a disc with a protuberance or 'tower' on top, hovering over the rural landscape, with a telephone pole and wires to the left of the frame —a detail that, ironically, would be central to the later dispute.
The Trents did not immediately seek publicity; the photos first circulated among acquaintances and appeared in the local McMinnville newspaper, the Telephone-Register, and shortly after in the nationally circulated LIFE magazine, becoming one of the visual icons of the phenomenon. Their analytic notoriety, however, came in 1968-1969, when the University of Colorado included them in the government-funded study known as the Condon Report. Astronomer and planetary physicist William K. Hartmann, an investigator for the committee, conducted a detailed analysis of the negatives —using photometry to measure the brightness of the various areas and elements of photogrammetry to estimate distance— and wrote the sentence that would make the case famous: that this was one of the few reports in which all factors investigated, geometric, psychological and physical, appeared consistent with the assertion that an extraordinary, silvery, metallic, disc-shaped object, tens of meters across and evidently artificial, had flown within sight of the two witnesses. It was one of the very few positive conclusions of a report designed, in its general orientation, to close the subject.
That assessment was not the last word. The skeptic Robert Sheaffer advanced in the 1970s the most influential counterargument: from the direction of the shadows beneath the telephone wires, he held that the photos could have been taken in the morning rather than at dusk as the Trents claimed, which opened the door to a staging and weakened the testimony; his analysis even led the original Condon investigator to reconsider his conclusion. Decades later, in 2013, the French group IPACO applied photogrammetric analysis and claimed to have detected a suspension thread above the object, concluding that it was a small hollow-bottomed model hung from a wire, possibly tied to the power line. In the opposite direction, defenders such as physicist Bruce Maccabee reanalyzed the negatives and disputed the morning-shadows thesis, holding that the light was compatible with an overcast late afternoon as reported. Neither the real-object defense nor the model thesis has been conclusively demonstrated: the McMinnville case remains the archetypal example of genuinely disputed photographic evidence, with no technical verdict that closes the question in either direction.

Why this case moved the needle
It is the most analyzed photographic case in the U.S. corpus and the canonical example of visual evidence that resists closure in both directions. Its importance is above all methodological. The Trent photos are one of the very few items the Condon Report —a study whose general orientation tended to discredit— could not dismiss, thanks precisely to Hartmann's internal analysis; and they are, at the same time, the target of the most elaborate hoax hypotheses ever built against a UAP image, from Sheaffer's shadow direction to IPACO's suspension thread. That the same object sustains, for over seventy years, a technical endorsement from inside a skeptical committee and an equally detailed technical refutation, says something about the limits of the medium.
That is its central value for the corpus: McMinnville shows exactly where the ceiling of analog photography as evidence lies. Two negatives, however good, do not contain enough information to discriminate conclusively between a large, distant object and a small, nearby model hung from a wire —the classic scale-and-distance ambiguity in a monocular image without reliable metric references. Neither Hartmann's photometry nor IPACO's photogrammetry resolves that irreducible margin; each side reads the same pixels in favor of its hypothesis. That is why the case is Tier A for the depth of its documentation and analysis, but with deliberately moderate probability: the domestic-hoax hypothesis, though never proven, is serious, specific and persistent, and the calibration reflects that the case matters precisely for remaining unresolved, not for leaning to one side.
