The file in question
On January 15, 2023, a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor mounted on a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone recorded, while filming another MQ-9 over an area of South Asia whose exact country was not disclosed, an object crossing the sensor's field of view from left to right with what appeared to be an atmospheric or cavitation wake trailing behind it — the kind of visual trail that in conventional video would suggest an object moving at high speed and disturbing the air or some surface in its path.
The case became publicly known on April 19, 2023, when the director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, presented it at an open hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena — the same session where he showed the 2016 'Mosul Orb' and the 2022 Middle East spherical object. Unlike those two, for this case Kirkpatrick did have a technical explanation to offer.
Per the official description published alongside the video, AARO analyzed the full-motion footage, incorporated additional imagery captured with a longer focal length —which in practice allows greater optical zoom on the same object— and cross-referenced that data against the region's commercial air traffic records. The result: the office assessed the object was likely a commercial aircraft, and that the apparent cavitation wake was actually a video compression artifact —a distortion introduced by the compression codec itself when processing the motion and thermal contrast of a moving object, not a physical phenomenon occurring around the actual object.
AARO was explicit, however, that this conclusion did not close the file definitively: the official record states that 'case resolution is pending final review,' a formulation that acknowledges the weight of the technical analysis performed without yet formally sealing the case as resolved in the office's record.

Why this case moved the needle
This file's value lies in what it shows about the resolution process, not the object itself. It is one of the few cases in the corpus where the agency responsible documents, step by step, how it moved from 'anomalous object with inexplicable wake' to 'probable commercial aircraft with sensor artifact' — analyzing additional footage with greater optical zoom and cross-referencing that data against real air traffic records. It is exactly the kind of reproducible methodology that most UAP files, including several in this same corpus, fail to show.
The central technical detail —that a visually convincing 'cavitation wake' turned out to be video compression, not a physical phenomenon— is a lesson of general reach for interpreting any low-resolution military sensor footage. Compression codecs introduce visual artifacts around high-contrast moving edges, and those artifacts can convincingly mimic wakes, halos or distortions that a trained observer would interpret as physical properties of the object. Any reading of an 'anomalous wake' in low-quality compressed footage should, after this case, be treated with additional default skepticism.
That the case remains technically 'pending final review' despite such a thorough explanation is also instructive: it reflects the relatively high bar AARO sets for itself before formally closing a file, even when the weight of evidence clearly points to a conventional explanation. This case's posterior places the overwhelming majority of its mass on 'mundano_natural' precisely for that reason: it is not an unsupported hunch, it is the conclusion of a documented analytical process with verifiable data —commercial air traffic, focal length, video compression— that the corpus itself can describe precisely rather than speculate about.
