On January 8, 2008, around 18:15 local time, multiple residents of Stephenville and surrounding areas (Erath County, Texas) observed a large, silent object with bright lights moving slowly to the east. The highest-profile witness was Constable Lee Roy Gaitan; others included private pilots, farmers, and residents reporting independently.
Researcher Robert Powell (then MUFON director of research) requested FAA radar data via FOIA. The FAA provided primary radar tracks showing an unidentified trace moving across the region. Critically, the trace drifted toward the restricted airspace of George W. Bush's Crawford Ranch on a slow approach — coinciding with the president's presence at the ranch. F-16 aircraft from the 457th Fighter Squadron (Carswell/Fort Worth) were launched according to radar records.
The 301st Fighter Wing eventually confirmed it had been conducting training exercises in the area that night, contradicting its initial statement that no aircraft had been in the area. The conventional alternative explanation (F-16s in training) does not contradict the specific testimony about the large lit object, but the 301st has not fully clarified the discrepancy. The case is one of the few with exhaustive FOIA analysis of FAA primary radar, published by MUFON in an extensive technical report.
