The years in question
Between May 2007 and the summer of 2009, Yalçın Yalman, a night security guard at a residential complex in Kumburgaz (the western edge of Istanbul, on the Sea of Marmara coast), repeatedly filmed objects over the sea during multiple early-morning hours, almost always at the same time of year. Yalman used a camera with a high-magnification telephoto lens (cited as up to 200x) to capture the distant lights, and the material accumulated over the three years on Hi-8 and Mini-DV cassettes, totaling several hours and some twenty-five separate video segments; other residents also filmed the phenomenon.
In the closest shots, the object appears disc-shaped, with a central dome or structure and what look like portholes or peripheral lights; in some heavily magnified frames, shapes can be made out that some observers interpreted as figures inside the structure. The consistency of the morphology across shots from different dates is one of the most-cited features of the case.
TÜBİTAK (Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu — Turkey's Scientific and Technological Research Council) examined the material. Its analysis concluded that the footage was not computer-generated (CGI) or a hoax, that it showed an object with a real physical structure, and that it could not be easily explained as an atmospheric phenomenon or known object — though the body did not assert extraterrestrial origin. It is one of the few cases in which a national scientific agency has issued a formal finding validating the non-hoax character of footage filmed by a civilian witness.

Why this case moved the needle
What distinguishes Kumburgaz is the combination of an unusually extensive video corpus —hours of material, repeated over three years from a single location— with a formal forensic analysis issued by a national scientific agency that ruled out fraud and digital manipulation. That institutional validation of a civilian witness's material is exceptional: most UFO footage never reaches an official authenticity finding. The morphological consistency across shots separated in time adds weight, because it complicates the hypothesis of a one-off camera artifact.
But editorial honesty requires carefully separating two things the case tends to fuse: the video being authentic does not mean the object is anomalous. The TÜBİTAK finding validates the carrier (not CGI, not a model), not the interpretation (what was filmed). And here a structural limitation weighs heavily: the entire corpus comes essentially from a single operator, from a single vantage point, aimed over the sea with an extreme telephoto lens. The strongest skeptical hypothesis —deck lights from ships or yachts anchored in the Marmara, defocused by the extreme zoom and distorted by thermal turbulence over the water, producing a 'bokeh' that suggests portholes and a dome— is geometrically and optically compatible with the most-cited frames, and was never formally refuted. That is why the case's weight on the non-human-entities narrative is minimal despite the apparent quality of the material: a single vantage point over water with extreme optics is precisely the setting where a mundane object can take on an extraordinary appearance. The case's value lies in the non-hoax validation and the persistence of the corpus, not in a conclusion about the nature of the object. In corpus terms, Kumburgaz illustrates a recurring pattern: an institutional finding of authenticity is improperly transferred, in public circulation, into a finding of anomaly, when these are logically distinct claims. That is why the case's posterior splits its weight in two simultaneous and opposite directions —some mass on the anomalous narrative through the finding and the apparent quality, and some mass on the mundane/natural narrative through the strength of the skeptical candidate— without either dominating. It is a well-documented case whose documentation, paradoxically, does not resolve the central question.
