In 2021, an infrared sensor over a military range in the western United States recorded three unidentified objects. On May 31, 2023, AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick presented the case to NASA's Independent Study Team on UAP — and closed it in the same presentation: video analysis, cross-referenced with the region's commercial air traffic data, showed that three commercial aircraft's radar tracks matched the three observed points exactly. At the sensor's recorded distance, the aircraft appeared as mere dots, with no recognizable shape. It is one of the few cases in the corpus with a complete, verifiable official resolution.

The file in question
At some point in 2021, an infrared video sensor installed over a military range in the western United States —the exact location was not disclosed— recorded three unidentified objects within its field of view. The file remained unresolved for nearly two years, until on May 31, 2023, the director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, presented it publicly at an open meeting of NASA's Independent Study Team on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena.
Unlike most of the cases Kirkpatrick showed in his 2023 public appearances, this one arrived with a complete resolution in the same presentation. Per the official description published alongside the video, AARO analyzed the full-motion footage and cross-referenced it against the region's commercial air traffic data. The result was unambiguous: the radar tracks corresponding to three distinct commercial aircraft matched precisely with the three objects appearing on the infrared sensor. At the distance the sensor captured them, the aircraft were not recognizable as such — they appeared only as small heat points, with no discernible shape, wing, or fuselage, exactly the kind of ambiguous image that, in a file without that data cross-reference, would have simply been cataloged as 'unidentified UAP.'
The material was released in two versions: a recording of nearly eight and a half minutes with the more extensive sensor footage, and a shorter briefing-format version —three minutes fifty-one seconds— that more closely matches the public presentation Kirkpatrick gave to the NASA panel, with the explanation built in. Both were published by the Department of Defense via DVIDS under public domain license.

Why this case moved the needle
This is, within the corpus, one of the few cases with a complete and transparent cycle: unidentified object, precisely described analytical methodology, and a verifiable resolution using external data —commercial air traffic— that anyone with access to flight records could, in principle, independently cross-check. That sets it apart from the vast majority of 'resolved' files in the corpus, where resolution usually rests on the agency's word without an attached verifiable external datum.
The core analytical value is almost pedagogical: three heat points with no recognizable shape, seen at the right distance and with no further context, are indistinguishable from a 'generic anomalous object' of the kind that populates much of UAP literature. What resolved them was not an analysis of their flight behavior or morphology —neither was discernible— but overlaying their trajectories against an independent, verifiable record: the actual air traffic in the area at that time. It is the same methodological principle that resolved the 'South Asian Object' case from the same batch —cross-referencing commercial flight data— applied here with full success rather than partial.
The case also illustrates a pattern Kirkpatrick repeatedly noted in his appearances: much of UAP reporting does not describe genuinely anomalous objects, but ordinary objects observed under conditions —distance, sensor resolution, absence of flight context— that prevent identification with the means available at the time of observation. This case's posterior, with 90% of the mass on 'mundano_natural,' reflects exactly that: it is not an analytical judgment call under uncertainty, it is a direct reading of an official resolution with cross-referenced, verifiable evidence.
