The Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program (AAWSAP) was established by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in September 2008, managed by contractor Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS) under the direction of entrepreneur Robert Bigelow. Federal funding totaled approximately $22 million during 2008-2010, requested by Senator Harry Reid and authorized through the black budget.
The most controversial component of AAWSAP was its research at Skinwalker Ranch (Utah), a 200-hectare rural property that Bigelow had purchased from rancher Terry Sherman following Sherman family reports of multiple phenomena — UAPs, anomalous creatures, poltergeist activity, cattle mutilations — during the 1990s. AAWSAP installed scientific equipment at the ranch from 2008-2010 and produced 38 Defense Intelligence Reference Documents (DIRDs) on topics such as wormhole physics, biological effects of UAP, exotic propulsion, and more.
The DIRDs were partially declassified in 2018-2019 via FOIA by independent researchers (John Greenewald, The Black Vault). The program was administratively terminated in 2010. AAWSAP is the direct precursor to AATIP (Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program), which Luis Elizondo led.
