Robert Bigelow

Robert T. Bigelow (n. 1945, Las Vegas) es un empresario estadounidense que hizo fortuna en bienes raíces y hotelería —principalmente con la cadena Budget Suites of America— y que canalizó parte de ese capital hacia dos pasiones poco convencionales: el desarrollo aeroespacial privado y la investigación de fenómenos anómalos. En 1999 fundó Bigelow Aerospace, dedicada a hábitats espaciales inflables; la compañía llegó a poner en órbita los prototipos Genesis I y II y, en 2016, el módulo BEAM acoplado a la Estación Espacial Internacional para la NASA. Esa credibilidad como contratista aeroespacial real es la que explica cómo, años después, su empresa pudo recibir un contrato de inteligencia del Departamento de Defensa.

Su interés por lo anómalo es anterior y más profundo. En 1995 creó el National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS), un instituto privado que reunió a científicos —el bioquímico Colm Kelleher, el astrofísico Eric Davis, entre otros— para estudiar de forma rigurosa avistamientos UAP, mutilaciones de ganado y fenómenos asociados. En 1996 compró el Skinwalker Ranch, en Utah, e instaló allí vigilancia científica continua durante casi una década. NIDS no produjo artículos revisados por pares y Bigelow lo cerró en 2004 por agotamiento metodológico, pero sentó las bases —personal, métodos, bases de datos— de lo que vendría después.

El hito institucional llega en 2008, cuando su nueva empresa Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies (BAASS) gana un contrato sole-source del Departamento de Defensa, gestionado por la Defense Intelligence Agency, para ejecutar el programa AAWSAP (Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program): unos 22 millones de dólares para estudiar amenazas aeroespaciales avanzadas y firmas no convencionales. BAASS instaló instrumentación en Skinwalker, recopiló testimonios y produjo los 38 Defense Intelligence Reference Documents. AAWSAP es la pieza documental más sólida del corpus para la narrativa de programa clasificado, y Bigelow es la bisagra privada que la hizo posible: sin su infraestructura y su relación con el senador Harry Reid, el programa probablemente no habría existido en esa forma.

Bigelow (b. 1945, Las Vegas) is an American entrepreneur who made his fortune in real estate and hospitality —chiefly with the Budget Suites of America chain— and channeled part of that capital into two unconventional passions: private aerospace development and the investigation of anomalous phenomena. In 1999 he founded Bigelow Aerospace, dedicated to inflatable space habitats; the company orbited the Genesis I and II prototypes and, in 2016, the BEAM module docked to the International Space Station for NASA. That credibility as a genuine aerospace contractor is what explains how, years later, his company could receive a defense-intelligence contract.

His interest in the anomalous is older and deeper. In 1995 he created the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS), a private institute that gathered scientists —biochemist Colm Kelleher, astrophysicist Eric Davis, among others— to rigorously study UAP sightings, cattle mutilations and associated phenomena. For UAP Codex, Bigelow is neither witness nor theorist but financier and institutional intermediary: the actor who for three decades sustained, with private capital, a line of research the state ultimately adopted and paid for. That very position is his critical flank. Concentrating so much of the record —the ranch, the institute, the contractor company and the database— in a single private figure with strong personal convictions (Bigelow has stated in interviews his certainty about a non-human presence) introduces a source-bias risk that any careful reading of the AAWSAP case must weigh.
