Institutional evidence: multiple verifiable witnesses or official documentation. The night in question
On January 28, 1994, Air France flight 3532 (from Nice toward London) was flying over the Paris region in an Airbus A320. Around 13:14, three crew members in the cockpit —Captain Jean-Charles Duboc, co-pilot Valérie Chauffour and a steward present at the time— observed a large, dark, brown-red object with fuzzy edges on the horizon. What first looked like a cloud or a backlit aircraft resolved into a mass the crew described as a 'gigantic lens', very roughly estimated at about 300 meters across, that appeared to change shape —shifting from a lenticular silhouette to something more elongated— before disappearing within about a minute, as if becoming transparent or vanishing in place.
What lifts the case above an isolated visual sighting is the instrumental corroboration. The French Air Defense Operations Center (CODA) at Taverny recovered from its records a radar echo of about 50 seconds whose path crossed the A320's at close range, and whose end coincides in time with the moment the crew said the object disappeared. The temporal concordance between the visual disappearance and the loss of the echo is the most-cited element of the file.
GEIPAN, the CNES's official unit for unidentified aerospace phenomena, keeps the case in its inventory classified as 'unexplained' (file 1994-01-01345). The COMETA report —written by former senior French officers and experts and published in 1999— highlighted it as an example of extraordinary maneuvers and speeds.
Analytical honesty, however, requires recording the cracks. The visual-radar correlation is not perfect: part of the documentation notes that the traffic the radar placed was approaching from the aircraft's right, while the crew saw the object to their left, casting doubt on whether the echo and the visual object are the same thing. Later re-analyses proposed a large stratospheric balloon as a partial candidate: it would explain the diffuse lenticular mass and the apparent 'disappearance' through a change in illumination angle, though it fits the reported shape change less well. The file, in sum, is strong but not conclusive.

Why this case moved the needle
Air France 3532 is one of France's strongest aviation-plus-radar cases and, together with Trans-en-Provence (physical trace) and Valensole (occupants), completes the French triptych with a purely aeronautical-instrumental case. Its strength is not isolated testimony but the combination of a professional crew, independent military-radar corroboration with a temporal coincidence of the disappearance, an official 'unexplained' classification by a state agency (GEIPAN), and the COMETA mention. It is the modality —multimodal correlation with an institutional chain— that the corpus weighs as modest for professional witnesses.
The case is also useful for its explicit limits, which the corpus does not hide. The left-right discrepancy between the radar echo and the visual position weakens the claim that both record the same object; and a stratospheric balloon, though imperfect, remains on the table. That GEIPAN keeps it as 'unexplained' does not mean 'inexplicable': it means the agency found no conventional attribution covering all elements. Air France 3532 teaches the value —and the ceiling— of instrumental corroboration when data are rich but not perfectly consistent with each other.
It is also a useful corrective to a common error: treating 'radar-confirmed' as a binary seal of authenticity. Radar returns are themselves interpretive artifacts —they can register weather, chaff, anomalous propagation or genuine traffic— and a temporal coincidence with a visual event is suggestive but not proof of identity, especially when the geometry does not line up. The strongest reading of Air France 3532 is therefore modest and precise: a credible professional crew saw something they could not identify, an independent military system recorded an echo that ended when the sighting did, and a state agency, after due review, declined to attribute it. That is a high-quality unknown, not a demonstrated craft —and the corpus values it as exactly that.
