Part 01
The night in question
Between 1 August and 15 October 2012, an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) unit posted at Thakung, near Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh —a strip of extreme altitude along the contested border with China— logged more than a hundred sightings of what the reports called 'Unidentified Luminous Objects' (ULO): yellowish spheres.
The pattern described by the observers was recurrent. The objects appeared to rise from the horizon on the Chinese side at dusk and move slowly across the sky for three to five hours before vanishing toward dawn. A regular observer noted a telling detail: the object appeared each day about four minutes later than the previous one and moved relative to the stars while being the brightest point in the sky. The ITBP escalated a formal report to its Delhi headquarters in September 2012, which in turn rose through the institutional chain to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
In September the Indian Army deployed a mobile ground-radar unit and a spectrum analyzer to a high point near the lake. The instrumental result was significant in both directions: the radar failed to detect the object being tracked visually —indicating it was neither metallic nor radar-reflective— and the spectrum analyzer picked up no signal emission. Data and imagery were forwarded to national technical agencies (among them ISRO, DRDO and NTRO), which in their assessment ruled out artificial candidates such as drones (UAV), surface drones and low-Earth-orbit satellites.
The leading skeptical explanation must be stated clearly, because it is probably correct. Astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics analyzed the observations and concluded that the object seen from one of the posts corresponded to the planet Jupiter —the observations coincided with its diurnal motion— and that the second object, appearing toward dawn, was the planet Venus. The daily four-minute delay in the object's rising, noted by the observer himself, is precisely the sidereal-time offset: the unmistakable signature of a fixed star on the celestial vault, not a vehicle. The extreme altitude, the thin air and the lack of terrain references further favor illusions of motion and size (autokinesis) over bright astronomical objects.
The institutional trail —the ITBP → PMO chain, the military radar deployment, the consultation of technical agencies— is contemporaneously documented by the Indian press (India Today, Times of India, IBTimes), but the original report was never published in full. The case is therefore a double example: of serious institutional handling of a sensitive border report and, at the same time, of a phenomenon with a very solid conventional astronomical explanation.

Why this case moved the needle
It is one of the few corpus cases where the chain of command documentably reaches the highest level of the state (ITBP → Delhi headquarters → Prime Minister's Office) and where the Army deployed dedicated instrumentation —radar and a spectrum analyzer— to characterize a border report. For its institutional value, it illustrates how a modern state processes a mass sighting in a zone of maximum geopolitical sensitivity.
Editorial honesty requires, however, stressing that the conventional explanation is especially strong here. The identification of Jupiter and Venus by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, supported by the daily four-minute offset characteristic of sidereal time, fits every feature of the sighting: nightly persistence of hours, great brightness, absence of radar echo and absence of emission. For that reason, within the corpus, the case contributes above all to the institutional-handling hypothesis (how a report is treated, not what the object was) and only marginally weakens the natural-phenomenon hypothesis, since the natural phenomenon itself —bright planets misidentified at extreme altitude— is probably the answer. It is a useful reminder that the solidity of the institutional chain and the triviality of the physical cause are not contradictory.
