In November 1968, a French physician (anonymized as 'Dr. X') saw from his window two luminous disks that merged into one and emitted a beam. After the encounter an axe wound and an old war injury vanished, and weeks later a triangular rash appeared on him and on his fourteen-month-old son. Documented by Aimé Michel and Jacques Vallée and published in Flying Saucer Review (1969), it is one of the most cited — and hardest to close — 'physical effects' cases.

Limited evidence: single-witness, local or without primary verification. The night in question
In the early hours of a day in early November 1968, a physician from south-eastern France — whose identity investigators protected under the pseudonym 'Dr. X' — was woken by the crying of his fourteen-month-old son. He got up with difficulty: days earlier he had injured his leg chopping wood with an axe, and he also carried an old wound from the Algerian war. The child was pointing toward flashes coming through the shutters. Looking out, the physician said he saw two horizontal, disk-shaped objects, silvery white above and bright red below, with antennae and beams of light. The two disks approached, merged into a single one and, after a period of observation, the object emitted a beam of light toward the house before vanishing with a bang, leaving a kind of filament or cloud that dissipated.
What makes the case memorable is not the sighting itself but the sequence of physical effects the physician and his family reported afterward, which the investigation documented. In the following hours, the pain and swelling of the axe wound disappeared; the sequelae of the old war injury also subsided, something that — according to the follow-up — held throughout the observed period. But the most disconcerting element came days later: a triangle-shaped rash erupted on the physician's abdomen, and shortly after an identical triangular rash appeared on his son's belly, although the child had not witnessed the encounter in the same way. Those marks, according to the account, appeared and disappeared intermittently for months, baffling the physicians who examined them. Associated effects were also reported — disrupted clocks and electrical circuits, and an episode of alleged levitation — of a far more anecdotal nature.
The investigation was carried out by two heavyweight figures. Science writer Aimé Michel, a reference of French ufology, met the physician, documented the case and published it in Flying Saucer Review in 1969. The astrophysicist and computer scientist Jacques Vallée — who was then building his 'invisible college' of scientists interested in the phenomenon — studied it and incorporated it into his corpus as an example of the 'physical and medical effects' that, in his view, distinguished serious cases from mere perceptual confusion. For Vallée, the triangular rash shared by father and son was especially significant: a physical, datable effect on a secondary witness who had not lived through the sighting, hard to reduce to suggestion.
The skeptical file is serious and necessary. It is an essentially single-witness case, with no instrumentation, no photograph and no external witnesses of the object; it depends entirely on the credibility of one man and on the documentation of two non-neutral investigators. The disappearance of the pain can be read as a psychosomatic effect or a coincidence with the natural healing of a recent wound; the lights, as a misidentification of an atmospheric or astronomical phenomenon amplified by abrupt waking. The triangular rash is the most resistant point — a shared dermatological mark is rare — but without an independent, contemporary, published medical file, its evidential value remains tied to the testimonial chain. The case thus lives in the category Vallée defended and that the corpus handles with tongs: articulate, good-faith testimony, with a physical effect that does not fully fit the prosaic, but without the objective evidence that would lift it out of doubt.

Why this case moved the needle
The Dr. X case is the European archetype of the 'physical effects' incident: its interest lies not in the lights but in what the witnesses' bodies did afterward — the reported healing and, above all, the triangular rash shared by the physician and his fourteen-month-old son. It matters to the corpus because it marks the upper limit of what a single-witness case can aspire to contribute: a datable physical effect on a secondary witness is harder to explain by suggestion than a mere account, which is why Vallée elevated it to a centrepiece of his 'invisible college'. But it also marks the lower limit of objective evidence: without instrumentation, without an independent published medical file and without external witnesses of the object, everything rests on a testimonial chain with committed investigators. Its Tier B and its distribution — with appreciable mass in 'open non-human', Vallée's ontological territory, balanced by 30% mundane — reflect exactly that tension: the best of the purely testimonial cases is still, by definition, insufficient to conclude, and at the same time too anomalous to dismiss.
