On the stormy night of October 24, 1886, a family of nine in a hut near Maracaibo reportedly woke to a loud hum and a dazzling light that filled the house; afterward they suffered vomiting, swellings and sores, and the trees around the house withered on the ninth day — a picture reminiscent of radiation sickness. The U.S. consul Warner Cowgill reported it in 'Scientific American' (Dec 18, 1886). It is one of the earliest descriptions of a luminous phenomenon with biological effects in the scientific press, but it rests on a single second-hand report. Tier B.

Part 01
The night in question
The account comes from a letter dated at the U.S. Consulate in Maracaibo, Venezuela, on November 17, 1886, and published a month later in 'Scientific American' on December 18, 1886. Its author, the U.S. consul Warner Cowgill, described an episode that occurred on the night of October 24, described as rainy and tempestuous. A family of nine was sleeping in a hut a few leagues from Maracaibo when, according to the report, it was awakened by a loud hum and a vivid, dazzling light that intensely illuminated the interior of the dwelling. Terror-stricken, believing —as they related— that the end of the world had come, the occupants knelt to pray, but their prayers were interrupted almost immediately by violent vomiting and by the appearance of extensive swellings on the skin.
The strangest part of the account, underscored by the consul himself, was the pattern of damage. The house was left intact —all doors and windows were closed during the episode—, so no lightning strike or conventional fire explained what happened. The trees around the hut showed no sign of injury until the ninth day, when they withered all at once, almost simultaneously with the development of sores on the occupants' bodies. The progression —light and hum, immediate nausea, swellings, and then sores and withered vegetation with a delay of days— is what has caught modern readers' attention: it resembles, in form, the clinical picture of radiation sickness, a medical entity that in 1886 did not exist as a concept (radioactivity would be discovered a decade later).
That parallel is precisely what has kept the case alive in Fortean and ufological literature, sometimes with the insinuation that something emitted radiation over the hut. But the file is thin and must be read carefully. Everything rests on a single document: the report of a consul who was not an eyewitness but relayed what he was told, with no names of the affected, no medical follow-up, no independent confirmation. The prosaic explanations are several and plausible: ball lightning or an atmospheric electrical discharge during the storm (Maracaibo is famous for the Catatumbo lightning, one of the most electrically active areas on the planet), a poisoning or coincident illness retrospectively attributed to the light, or a tale embellished on its journey from the Venezuelan countryside to the pages of a New York magazine. None can be confirmed or dismissed: the case remained a documented period curiosity, strong in editorial pedigree and weak in verification.

Why this case moved the needle
It matters as one of the earliest records —1886, six decades before Roswell— in which a luminous phenomenon appears associated with biological effects on witnesses, and published moreover in a prestigious scientific magazine. In the corpus's structure it is the South American relative of the Bonilla observation (1883): nineteenth-century cases that reached the serious press of their time, before the 'UFO' framework existed, and that show the phenomenology of anomalous lights with physical effects did not begin with the saucer era but has older roots. Its value is not probative but historical and methodological: it documents that the problem —and the difficulty of closing it— is old.
Its second function is to serve as a limiting case on source quality. Unlike a multiple or instrumented sighting, here there is a single second-hand document: a consul relaying a peasant account with no names, no medical examination, no verifiable witnesses. That demands a prudent Tier B and a refusal to over-read the resemblance to radiation sickness, which is suggestive but also the kind of coincidence the modern mind projects backward. The most economical natural explanation —an intense electrical storm, perhaps ball lightning, in one of the most atmospherically active regions on Earth, plus a coincident illness or a tale that grew— reasonably covers the facts without needing anything exotic. For a corpus that distinguishes the strength of the evidence from the nature of the object, Maracaibo is an honest Tier B: an archival piece valuable for its antiquity and editorial pedigree, but whose object was probably a natural phenomenon and whose verification is, 140 years on, unrecoverable.
