Chile.Karim Bianchi · the Chilean senator who says he was abducted

In May 2024, the Chilean channel Vía X's program 'Not News' aired an interview with Senator Karim Bianchi Retamales, independent representative for the 15th Circumscription (Magallanes Region) since 2022, in which he publicly revealed for the first time an episode he said he experienced in 2012 and had kept mostly private for over a decade. By his account, he was driving from Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas, talking on the phone, when 'a spinning light approached, large, multicolored, like a saucer.' The vehicle shut off entirely —engine, lights, the phone he was talking on— and the next thing he recalls is 'appearing' about 200 kilometers further along the same route, with no memory of the stretch in between. He resumed the phone call with the same person to say he had already arrived. Bianchi has not publicly identified that person nor produced any record of the call.

By his account, the episode had aftereffects that lasted for months. For nearly a year, he said, he transmitted a sensation of 'electricity' when shaking hands with people. He also began noticing owls with a frequency he found significant —an association he said an expert linked to the rotation of those birds' necks and eyes. The most specific element of the account came about three days after the roadside episode: an elderly, bald, short man showed up at his office —he was working at a radio station at the time— and handed him papers he described as classified NASA documents, telling him he himself was 'from another planet' and that Bianchi 'had to spread the message'. Bianchi says he still keeps those documents, but has not made them public or submitted them to any independent examination or verification.

The interview went viral immediately in the Chilean press —BioBioChile, 24 Horas, La Cuarta, El Mostrador, Meganoticias, Chilevisión, La Prensa Austral— and reached international outlets such as Infobae. Bianchi explained his decade-plus silence by saying he did not want to expose himself to the criticism he anticipated, and he did in fact receive it: after the interview he responded on social media to a wave of mockery and hostile comments, stating that 'I very much regret the violence that people unleash on social media.' He did not retract any element of the account. There is no record of an official statement from the Chilean Senate nor from the Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena (CEFAA) —the Chilean state body that investigates UAP and already appears in this corpus— regarding the case. Bianchi has remained in office as senator since, active in public discussion on other matters.

The case matters for a structural reason more than for the content of the account itself: it is the first time this corpus records a sitting national legislator claiming in the first person to have been abducted, rather than commenting on the phenomenon from an official post or investigative committee. Bigelow and Grusch bring institutional authority about a subject they say they know through others; Bianchi brings the authority of public office to an experience he says he lived himself, with no documentary anchor, third-party testimony, or institutional backing whatsoever. It is the same 'authority without material' pattern the corpus already identifies elsewhere, taken to its barest form: here there is not even a meeting confirmed by a third party, as in the Bigelow case, or a formal complaint channel, as in Grusch's — there is only the word of a public official.

The account also gathers nearly the entire classic repertoire of the contactee tradition into a single case: lost time and unexplained displacement, aftereffects with no documented medical diagnosis, an animal-synchronicity pattern (the owls) with no proposed causal mechanism, and —the genre's most recognizable element— a messenger who delivers secret documents and demands the recipient 'spread the message'. That last element in particular replicates, almost point for point, the narrative structure of contactee encounters documented since the 1950s and 60s, which proves or rules out nothing about what actually happened, but is relevant for calibrating how much weight the account carries as evidence: so recognizable a narrative structure suggests, at minimum, the possibility that the memory was organized —consciously or not— around pre-existing cultural scripts.

The posterior calibration reflects that tension. The dominant mass on `indet` (0.45) acknowledges this is a single-witness account, with no independently corroborable element, revealed more than a decade after the events. `mundano_natural` (0.35) weighs the more plausible prosaic explanations —including fatigue or microsleep at the wheel on a long, solitary Patagonian route, and the retrospective reconstruction of an ambiguous experience along an already-familiar cultural script— flagged by science commentators who covered the case. `mundanoType: misid` assumes the good-faith hypothesis, consistent with the fact that Bianchi never retracted despite public pressure: if he is mistaken, the corpus treats it as sincere belief, not a calculated invention. What the corpus should track is not the account itself, but whether the documents Bianchi says he keeps are ever made public.
