Part 01

The night in question

On April 16, 2016, during coalition operations against the Islamic State, a U.S. reconnaissance platform —an MC-12 twin-engine surveillance aircraft— filmed over the city of Mosul, in northern Iraq, a spherical, metallic-looking object. In the clip, only about four seconds long and taken with an electro-optical/infrared sensor, the sphere crosses the frame with no visible lifting surfaces, no propulsion plume and no thermal signature betraying a conventional engine. It is what has since become known as the 'Mosul Orb'.

What sets this case apart from other leaks is its official status. The video was presented by the director of the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) himself, Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, during the Senate Armed Services Committee's public hearing on April 19, 2023 —the first time the Pentagon released that footage, after previously declining to do so. Kirkpatrick showed it alongside a near-identical spherical object recorded in 2022 elsewhere in the Middle East, noting that these 'orbs' (spheres roughly 1 to 4 meters across, typically white, silver or translucent) are a recurring morphology: by his own characterization, about half of the reports AARO receives describe round or spherical objects. He also stressed a key limitation: 'this is essentially all of the data we have associated with this event from some years ago,' and therefore 'it is going to be virtually impossible to fully identify that' from the video alone.

The corpus framing is balanced. The case's strength is its impeccable institutional chain of custody: not a rumor or a journalistic release, but military sensor footage officially acknowledged by the Pentagon's UAP agency, before the Senate. But honesty requires not over-reading it, and Kirkpatrick himself was explicit about what should NOT be read into it: at that same hearing he stated that AARO 'has found no credible evidence thus far of extraterrestrial activity, off-world technology, or objects that defy the known laws of physics.' It is a single sensor, a very short clip with no telemetry, concurrent radar, or speed or altitude measurement; and AARO itself has resolved many similar 'orbs' as mundane objects (balloons, drones, debris) or left that possibility open for lack of data. What anchors Iraq in the corpus is therefore an officially acknowledged, unresolved sensor datum —strong in provenance, open in interpretation.

Why this case moved the needle

Iraq's first case and one of the few Middle East cases in the corpus with a top-tier institutional chain of custody: military sensor footage officially presented by the AARO director before the U.S. Senate, not a leak. Its value is exactly that —official provenance and 'unresolved' status— together with a datum the case documents better than almost any other: that 'spheres' or 'orbs' are the most frequent morphology in the Pentagon's dataset, not an isolated oddity. That makes the Mosul Orb the type specimen of an entire class of reports, which raises its analytical interest even though each individual clip is data-poor.

It is also a case the corpus uses as an honesty calibrator. The same hearing that released the video is the one that put on record that AARO finds no evidence of extraterrestrial technology or of objects violating known physics, and that with a four-second clip lacking telemetry, full identification is practically impossible. The strongest mundane readings —a balloon, a small drone (friendly, allied or adversary) over a war zone saturated with actors operating unmanned platforms, or a sensor artifact— remain fully alive. It is therefore included with the conclusion deliberately open: what is solid is the provenance and official acknowledgment; what is open is what it was.
