El 11 de noviembre de 2014, alrededor de las 13:00, un helicóptero AS532 Cougar de la Armada de Chile realizaba un vuelo de entrenamiento a aproximadamente 4,500 pies frente a la costa de Valparaíso. El operador del sistema WESCAM MX-15 (cámara térmica) detectó un objeto a aproximadamente 55 km hacia el norte. Filmó el objeto durante 9 minutos y 12 segundos continuos.
El objeto, visible solo en infrarrojo, mostró: forma alargada con apéndices laterales, velocidad estimada compatible con aeronaves convencionales, dos descargas térmicas de gran intensidad emitidas hacia los lados ('plumas' caliente), y eventual entrada en una formación nubosa donde se perdió contacto. La tripulación no logró observación visual a pesar de cielo claro entre el helicóptero y el objeto.
CEFAA (Comité de Estudios de Fenómenos Aéreos Anómalos) recibió el video oficialmente. Director General Aeronáutico Civil autorizó investigación formal. Durante dos años, CEFAA consultó con DGAC, Fuerza Aérea de Chile, Armada, ENAER, meteorología (DMC), astrónomos, y físicos. La conclusión publicada en enero de 2017 clasificó el evento como 'fenómeno aéreo anómalo' — no identificado tras exhaustive evaluación institucional. CEFAA publicó el video FLIR completo y el reporte de investigación. Es uno de los pocos videos FLIR oficiales militares de UAP publicados de manera transparente por su gobierno de origen.
On November 11, 2014, around 13:00, a Chilean Navy AS532 Cougar helicopter was on a training flight at approximately 4,500 feet off the coast of Valparaíso. The WESCAM MX-15 (thermal camera) operator detected an object roughly 55 km to the north. He filmed the object for 9 minutes and 12 seconds continuous.
The object, visible only in infrared, displayed: elongated shape with lateral appendages, an estimated speed compatible with conventional aircraft, two high-intensity thermal discharges emitted to the sides ('hot plumes'), and eventual entry into a cloud formation where contact was lost. The crew was unable to make a visual observation despite clear sky between the helicopter and the object.
CEFAA (Comité de Estudios de Fenómenos Aéreos Anómalos) officially received the video. The Director General of Civil Aeronautics authorized a formal investigation. Over two years, CEFAA consulted with DGAC, the Chilean Air Force, the Navy, ENAER, meteorology (DMC), astronomers, and physicists. The conclusion, published in January 2017, classified the event as an 'anomalous aerial phenomenon' — unidentified after exhaustive institutional evaluation. CEFAA published the full FLIR video and investigation report. It is one of the few official military FLIR UAP videos transparently released by its government of origin.
