On September 16, 1994, during morning recess at the Ariel School (Ruwa, Zimbabwe), 62 children between 5 and 12 years old observed a silver object descend and settle in a field adjacent to the schoolyard. Some children reported one or more small humanoid figures emerging from the object and making eye contact and — according to several of them — telepathic contact with messages about environmental destruction.

The school principal, Colin Mackie, called local investigators and the BBC. Tim Leach (BBC) and Dr. John E. Mack (Harvard Medical School, professor of psychiatry and author of 'Abduction' 1994) traveled to Ruwa within weeks of the event. Mack interviewed the children individually using formal psychiatric methodology. Drawings independently produced by the children showed striking structural consistency in the shape of the object and of the figures.

The case has been revisited by documentary filmmakers for 30 years. In 2022, the documentary 'Ariel Phenomenon' (dir. Randall Nickerson) interviewed the adults who had been child witnesses. The intergenerational narrative consistency (the witnesses are now 35-42 years old) is methodologically notable. The cross-cultural Zimbabwean / Western interpretation of the phenomenon is cited in the literature on how cultural context shapes the description of anomalous events without invalidating the underlying event.
