Part 01

The night in question

On October 18, 1973, around 23:00 local time, an Army Reserve Bell UH-1H helicopter (316th Medical Detachment) was flying at about 2,500 feet over the Mansfield, Ohio area on a routine flight from Columbus to Cleveland. On board were Captain Lawrence Coyne (pilot in command), First Lieutenant Arrigo Jezzi, Sergeant John Healey, and Sergeant Robert Yanacsek. Yanacsek sighted a red light to the east that first appeared stationary and then approached on what looked like a collision course. Coyne took the controls and began an emergency descent: from about 2,500 to roughly 1,700 feet at a rate near 2,000 feet per minute, expecting an impact.

Before the impact, according to the crew, the object stopped and hung in front of and above the helicopter. They described it as an elongated gray metallic structure, cigar- or dome-shaped, filling the windshield, with a red light at the nose, a white light at the tail, and a green spotlight-like beam that swept the cabin and bathed the interior in green. During the episode, the magnetic compass reportedly began spinning uncontrollably. Most strikingly: although the collective was still in the descent position, the altimeter showed the helicopter had climbed to about 3,500 feet — Coyne later estimated an involuntary climb of nearly 1,800 feet with no control input, accompanied by a slight sense of acceleration.

The object accelerated to the west-northwest and departed. The crew reported the incident to Mansfield (Lahm Airport); there is controversy over the state of radio and radar contact at that moment. Four independent ground witnesses — a local family driving near Charles Mill Lake — later stated they saw both the helicopter and the object and the green light. The After Action Report was filed by the Army Reserve, and the case was technically reconstructed by researcher Jennie Zeidman for the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) in 1979.

The main skeptical explanation was offered by Philip J. Klass, who argued the object may have been a bolide (bright meteor) from the Orionid meteor shower, active at that time, and attributed the anomalous climb to operator error: Coyne, focused on avoiding the collision, may have reflexively pulled the collective without consciously registering it. This reading has weaknesses acknowledged even by its author: Klass searched for and found no record of a bolide at that place and time, and the duration of the sighting (several minutes, with the object apparently halting) fits poorly with a meteor, which lasts seconds. The piloting-error hypothesis remains the strongest objection to the case's physical component, since a reflexive climb is hard to exclude without control telemetry.

Part 02

Why this case moved the needle

Coyne's analytical interest rests on a specific, uncommon physical data point: the reported discrepancy between flight-control position (collective down, commanding descent) and actual altitude (a climb of ~1,800 feet). If accurate, it is one of the few military cases with an apparent kinetic manipulation of an aircraft, documented by instrument-rated aviators and supported by four independent civilian ground witnesses.

Honesty requires placing the counterweight at the center, not the margin. Klass's objection — operator error, a reflexive collective pull-up under stress, plus a possible Orionid bolide for the light — is the most serious mundane explanation and, without real control telemetry, cannot be excluded: the 'climb against the controls' depends on Coyne's later reconstruction, not an independent instrumental record. At the same time, the meteor hypothesis fits poorly with the several-minute duration and the object's apparent halt, and Klass himself found no record of the bolide.

The case therefore weighs through its institutional traceability (an Army Reserve After Action Report that remains archived without reclassification) and witness convergence, rather than a hard sensor signature. It is a clear example of the corpus's central tension: consistent professional testimony and a striking physical effect, but without the instrumentation that would close the debate between anomalous interaction and a perceptual-operational artifact under stress. The conservative calibration — minimal support to physical interaction, modest weakening of natural phenomena — reflects exactly that indeterminacy.
