On October 18, 1973, around 23:00 local time, an Army Reserve Bell UH-1H helicopter was flying at 2,500 feet over Mansfield, Ohio, carrying Captain Lawrence Coyne and three crew from Columbus to Cleveland. Sergeant Yanacsek sighted a red light to the east approaching on a collision course. Coyne took the controls and began an emergency descent from 2,500 to 1,700 feet at 2,000 feet per minute.
Before the expected impact, the object stopped above the helicopter. It was a gray, metallic cigar-shaped structure with a red light at the front, a green spotlight-like beam aimed at them, and a white rear light. The green beam illuminated the cabin. The helicopter's magnetic compass began spinning uncontrollably. The altimeter read 3,500 feet — Coyne discovered the helicopter had climbed 1,800 feet without any pilot input, with the collective still in the descent position.
The object accelerated to the northwest and departed. Mansfield air traffic control confirmed receiving the anomalous traffic on radar during the event. Four independent ground witnesses (the Coyne family in a car) reported observing both the helicopter and the object. The After Action Report was officially filed by the Army Reserve and subsequently released.
