On February 12, 2023, NORAD detected an octagonal object with no observable propulsion systems flying at approximately 20,000 feet over Lake Huron, near the Michigan-Ontario border. President Biden authorized a shootdown. A U.S. F-16 fired an AIM-9X missile that destroyed the object over the lake.
It was the fourth shootdown in eight days — the prior ones being the Chinese surveillance balloon off South Carolina (Feb 4), a cylindrical object over Alaska (Feb 10), and an object over Yukon (Feb 11). The Lake Huron object was explicitly distinguished by the Pentagon from the three earlier ones: General Glen VanHerck (NORAD Commander) stated at a briefing that 'I haven't ruled out anything' when asked about extraterrestrial origin — an unprecedented statement for an active four-star U.S. commander.
The object was never officially recovered — it rests on the lake floor. The case was subsequently designated PURSUE R02 (Pentagon Unidentified Recovery and Surveillance Unified Evaluation, release 02) in the UAP transparency documentation AARO began publishing.
