Part 01
The night in question
Between February and December 1946, with the war just over and the Soviet bloc newly installed in the Baltic, Scandinavia — and above all Sweden — received approximately 2,000 reports of rocket- or missile-shaped objects crossing its airspace, often with a luminous trail, sometimes followed by explosions or splashdowns in lakes. Activity peaked on August 9-11, 1946. The Swedish Defence Staff (Försvarsstaben) formed a formal investigative committee — known as the Ghost Rocket Committee — that systematically processed observations with support from military intelligence and the defence research institute.
Of approximately 1,000 reports reviewed by November 29, 1946, a significant fraction — the figure that circulated and that this corpus reproduces is about 225 cases — was classified as observations that could not be attributed to manifest errors, and a memo from FOA (Försvarets forskningsanstalt / National Defence Research Institute) dated December 3, 1946 recorded that nearly 100 impacts had been reported and that about 30 pieces of presumed debris had been received and examined in laboratory. A caveat crucial to the case's honesty: the examined debris turned out to be, for the most part, meteorite fragments or ordinary slag, not components of a manufactured projectile — a fact that weakens the 'technological physical object' reading even if the observed activity was real.
On October 10, 1946, the Defence Staff issued a public communiqué whose central conclusion is the file's most cited: in some cases, observations had been made that could not be explained as natural phenomena, Swedish aircraft, or imagination. The main investigated hypothesis — and the favorite of U.S. and British services, which sent experts such as General James Doolittle — was that these were Soviet tests of V-1/V-2 rockets using captured German technology, launched from Peenemünde or other Baltic sites. That hypothesis was never confirmed and is today considered unlikely: the Soviets had no operational rocket program of that range in 1946, there was no strategic reason to repeatedly overfly Sweden without a target, and no identifiable projectile ever fell.
The dominant skeptical explanation is astronomical and perceptual. The two August peaks coincide with the maximum of the Perseid meteor shower, suggesting that a substantial share of the sightings were bolides and bright meteors misinterpreted in a climate of postwar anxiety and intense media attention. Aeronautical engineer Eric Malmberg, secretary of the 1946 defence committee, stated years later that everyone on the committee, including its chairman, knew the ghost rockets did not originate from the Soviet Union because no evidence pointed that way. The files were declassified in 1984 and later made available via AFU (Arkivet för UFO-forskning), whose researchers (Clas Svahn, Anders Liljegren) have documented the case in detail.
The contemporary U.S. assessment, declassified in 2026 via PURSUE, matches that skeptical reading but adds a new detail: in the secret 'World in Review' bulletin of January 20, 1947, the War Department's Intelligence Division devoted a full section to the 'Ghost Rockets,' including the testimony of a Swedish Air Force pilot who, flying at 650 feet over central Sweden on August 14, saw a dark, cigar-shaped object —about 50 feet long— pass 200 feet above him at roughly 400 mph, with no visible wings, rudder, or flame. The bulletin concludes the best available evidence points to 'only 2 or 3 real incidents, perhaps as many as 5 or 10,' of low-flying V-1-type missiles, while the high-altitude sightings 'seem definitely to have been meteors or fireworks' — and openly suggests the Swedish Defence Staff exploited the episode for political purposes, at a time when the Swedish public was demanding cuts to defense spending.

Why this case moved the needle
The ghost rockets are likely the earliest corpus example of a neutral state organizing a formal institutional response to a wave of sightings: a dedicated committee, laboratory examination of presumed debris, international expert review, and a public communiqué that conceded an unexplained residue. That institutional scaffolding — not the nature of the objects — is what gives it analytical weight and makes it a direct precedent for the official systems the corpus later tracks (Sign, Blue Book, AARO).
The honest reading must be explicit about evidentiary weakness. The Soviet hypothesis, dominant in 1946, is today considered unlikely, and the committee secretary himself admitted no one believed it. The physical debris that seemed to be the case's material anchor turned out to be largely meteoritic. And the August double peak coincides with the Perseids, suggesting that a substantial part of the phenomenon was misinterpretation of bolides amid postwar anxiety. Taken together, the mundane explanations — meteors for the bulk, social panic and reporting bias for the volume — cover most of the 2,000 reports.
What does not fully dissolve is the residue declared by FOA: a subset of observations that the technical authority, after skeptical review, could not assign to known natural phenomena, Swedish aircraft, or imagination. That residue is modest, mixed with meteoric noise, and does not amount to a claim of anomalous technology; but it is a documented institutional result, not propaganda. The case's value to the corpus is methodological: it shows a serious state applying a skeptical filter and still leaving a small fraction unexplained — the recurring pattern that justifies continuing to measure rather than closing by decree.
