Part 01
The night in question
On the night of November 11-12, 1979, TAE flight 421 — a Sud Aviation Supercaravelle, registration EC-BIC — was flying from Palma de Mallorca to Las Palmas with about a hundred passengers aboard (the figure varies by source). Over the Valencia coast, Captain Francisco Javier Lerdo de Tejada and his crew observed intense red lights that appeared to approach and hold near the aircraft. Perceiving a possible collision risk and unable to identify them, the captain declared an emergency and diverted, landing preventively at Manises airport (Valencia).
The episode escalated to a military response. From Los Llanos air base (Albacete), in the small hours, a Wing 14 Mirage F-1 fighter piloted by Captain Fernando Cámara took off with the mission of identifying the phenomenon. Cámara reported achieving radar contact and, at one point, a visual observation of a luminous shape toward the Sagunto area, described as a truncated conical silhouette that changed color; he had to accelerate to supersonic speed (put at around Mach 1.4) to close in, and the object eluded him. The interceptor could not close the distance and, running low on fuel, returned to base. The whole incident was recorded in a Spanish Air Force file.
The declassification of this and other UFO files was driven by the Air Force between 1992 and 1995, a transparency process pioneering in Europe that released over a hundred pages on Manises and which preceded U.S. disclosure by years. That same documentation, however, is what underpins the mundane explanations, and editorial honesty requires giving them room. Researcher Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos, a leading critical analyst of the case, has argued that the 'Manises incident' is not a single event but the sum of several facts of different origins whose only link is the later will to bind them into a more mysterious narrative. Among the proposed conventional explanations: that the red lights seen by the crew corresponded to the gas flares (combustion stacks) of coastal petrochemical facilities — the Escombreras refinery, near Cartagena, has been pointed to — seen under favorable propagation conditions; and that part of the Mirage's anomalies might relate to electronic interference, in a context where the U.S. Sixth Fleet was operating in the Mediterranean with powerful electronic-warfare systems during the Iran hostage crisis. None of these hypotheses alone covers every element of the account, but together they offer a non-exotic route for much of it.

Why this case moved the needle
Manises is probably Spain's best-known UAP case and brings together strong institutional features: a real civilian in-flight emergency declared by a professional crew, a military response with a fighter and a named pilot, reported radar contact, and — above all — a voluntary, early declassification by the Air Force (1992-1995) that made Spain a European reference for transparency on these files decades before the United States.
Calibration, however, must separate the value of the file from the value of the phenomenon. The declassification process is exemplary and verifiable; what was declassified, however, admits a solid mundane reading. Ballester Olmos's thesis — that the case is the aggregation of heterogeneous events (refinery flares taken for pursuing lights, an emergency declared out of reasonable precaution, possible electronic interference in the interceptor) rather than a single intelligent object — is the dominant critical explanation in serious Spanish ufology, and cannot be ignored. That is why, within the corpus, the case substantially weakens the simple-natural-phenomenon hypothesis (there was radar, an intercept and qualified multi-witness reporting) but only modestly supports the non-human-entity hypothesis: the 'intercept' behavior is real in the account, but a chain of ordinary causes can explain most of the elements without invoking unknown technology. Presenting the skeptical reconstruction alongside the military file is what here distinguishes a calibrated analysis from the uncritical repetition of the heroic sighting narrative.
