On 20 February 1962, during the first U.S. crewed orbital flight (Friendship 7), John Glenn described to Houston thousands of luminous 'yellowish-green particles, the size and brightness of fireflies' floating around the capsule. The phenomenon puzzled at first, but was soon identified as ice crystals vented by the spacecraft's own systems.

Part 01

The night in question

On 20 February 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard the Friendship 7 capsule, on the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission. During one of his orbital sunrises, as the Sun rose after a period of darkness, Glenn radioed the control room in Florida an unexpected observation: the capsule was surrounded by a cloud of small luminous particles. He described them as 'bright yellowish-green particles, the size and intensity of fireflies on a very dark night', and noted there were 'literally thousands of them' on each side of the craft, seeming to float and drift slowly without apparently coming from any specific part of the vehicle.

The phenomenon momentarily puzzled both Glenn and Houston, on a flight that was already the riskiest leap of the U.S. space program to date. Glenn himself, a pilot and engineer, quickly offered a technical hypothesis: he speculated that the capsule's small stabilization-system steam jets might be the source, and that at about 190 kilometres altitude the vapor would solidify into ice, fluorescing when lit by solar radiation. Another contemporary hypothesis pointed to crystals formed from urine vented by the waste-management system. One key detail reinforced the local origin: the 'fireflies' disappeared as the capsule moved into brighter sunlight, exactly what one expects of tiny crystals that cease to stand out against a bright background.

With later missions and analysis of the systems, the puzzle closed. The particles were determined to be, almost certainly, ice crystals shed from the craft itself —in particular vents from the suit heat exchanger and life-support systems— lit by the Sun against the black of space. The same phenomenon would be observed on subsequent flights, including the 'swarm' described by Borman and Lovell on Gemini 7 three years later, cementing the 'fireflies' as a routine, well-understood effect of crewed low-orbit flight.

Why this case moved the needle

Glenn's 'fireflies' matter to the corpus as the seed case of the astronaut-sighting category and, at the same time, as its canonical explanation: the episode that established, as early as 1962, that a trained astronaut can observe a genuinely puzzling phenomenon in orbit that turns out to have a local, mundane cause. Together with Gemini 4 (McDivitt) and Gemini 7 (Borman), it completes the corpus's triad of early space observations and sets the frame for interpreting them: not every anomaly reported by an astronaut points outward; many point at the craft itself.

That is why the posterior loads overwhelmingly onto the mundane/natural narrative. The ice-crystal explanation —vented by life-support systems and lit by the Sun— is solid, repeatable and confirmed by decades of crewed flights observing the same effect; Glenn himself anticipated it in real time, and the detail that the particles faded as sunlight increased corroborates it. The small mass of indeterminacy reflects not serious doubt about the mechanism but the prudence of not closing at 100% a phenomenon described verbally from a capsule six decades ago. In the corpus, Glenn is the anchor on the luminous side of spaceflight: the proof that the most exotic conceivable scenario —thousands of lights surrounding a human in orbit— can have, and did have, the most domestic possible explanation.
