Biography

A Virginia emergency physician who left medicine in 1998 to devote himself to ufology. He founded CSETI in 1990, with protocols for seeking contact with extraterrestrial intelligence, and in 1993 the Disclosure Project, through which he gathered some twenty former military officers and officials at the National Press Club in 2001 to call for congressional hearings. That conference set the format later adopted by institutional disclosure; his later drift —the documentary 'Sirius', which presented as extraterrestrial a skeleton that turned out to be human— distanced him from the witnesses he had gathered.

On May 9, 2001, physician Steven M. Greer brought some twenty former military officers, officials and contractors to the National Press Club in Washington, where they told the press they had witnessed UFO events or their cover-up, and he called for open congressional hearings, protection for witnesses and a ban on space-based weapons. No hearings followed, but the format —witnesses with institutional credentials before the press, asking to testify under oath— is the direct precursor of the 2013 Citizen Hearing and of the real hearings since 2023.
