Biography
Her sons came home saying something bright had fallen on a nearby hill, and she climbed the slope with them and four other neighbors to look for it. Near the top the group described an enormous figure with luminous eyes, along with a penetrating smell and subsequent nausea. She was the adult voice who sustained the account before the press, with the social cost that carried in a small town. It is a textbook case of how a legend is built: the best-supported natural explanation —a barn owl on a branch, misread in the dark— proved more instructive than the creature.
