On the night of 19 September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill reported being followed by a light near Lancaster, New Hampshire, and, under later hypnosis with psychiatrist Benjamin Simon, recounted an abduction. Pease AFB logged a correlated radar return in Project Blue Book; Simon himself judged the memories to be fantasy, not recall.

Institutional evidence: multiple verifiable witnesses or official documentation. Three independent axes: the «tier» measures the strength of the evidence; the «probability» estimates how genuinely unexplained the case is —a natural phenomenon can remain unexplained, so it does not equal «non-prosaic»—; and the partition of explanations (below) says what it most plausibly was. So a well-documented case can have a possible hoax as its most plausible cause, and a Tier B is not, for that reason, a hoax.

On the night of September 19-20, 1961, Barney Hill (39, postal worker, African American) and his wife Betty Hill (41, social worker, active NAACP member) were driving back from a vacation in Niagara Falls and Montreal toward their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Near Lancaster, deep into a nighttime drive through the White Mountains, Betty noticed around 10:30 PM a bright light in the sky that seemed to move and follow the vehicle. Barney stopped the car more than once, observed with binoculars, and would later report seeing a disc-shaped object with a row of windows and 'occupants' visible through them, which sent him running back to the car in panic. The couple resumed the drive and, by their account, heard a series of beeps or buzzing sounds; on reaching home they noted an unexplained delay of about two hours relative to the expected travel time — the episode the phenomenon's culture would name 'missing time'.
That same night, Betty telephoned the USAF Pease AFB in Portsmouth to report the sighting. A radar record of an unidentified object in the area correlated in time exists, captured in Project Blue Book files (later partially declassified); it should be noted, however, that the strength of that radar correlation has been described in some sources as possible but inconclusive. In the following weeks Betty developed recurring dreams with a detailed narrative of being taken aboard and examined, which she herself wrote down.
Between December 1963 and June 1964 —that is, more than two years after the event— both underwent formal clinical-hypnosis sessions with Dr. Benjamin Simon, a prominent Boston psychiatrist and neurologist with full academic credentials and a specialist in therapeutic hypnosis. The Hills were not seeking to explain a sighting but to treat the anxiety and nightmares Barney had been carrying. The sessions were conducted independently with each spouse and produced narratives convergent in general structure but not identical in detail: the now-archetypal account of short, large-eyed beings, a physical examination aboard, and a 'star map' Betty said she had seen. Dr. Simon, the responsible clinician, professionally concluded that the recovered 'memories' were not the record of a real event but fantasies —in his reading, derived from Betty's dreams and absorbed by Barney within the couple's dynamic—. That primary-source medical opinion is an essential part of the file and weighs against the literal capture reading. The 1966 book 'The Interrupted Journey' by John G. Fuller, based on the clinical transcripts, was a bestseller and fixed the case in popular culture; years later, in 1968-1974, researcher Marjorie Fish reconstructed Betty's map in three dimensions and proposed that it matched the vicinity of the Zeta Reticuli binary system, a correspondence that remains disputed and that critics attribute to the statistical coincidence inevitable when fitting points to real stars.

It is the first widely publicized 'abduction' case in the U.S. and, to a large degree, the cultural template for the entire later subgenre: the short, large-eyed beings, the examination aboard, the 'missing time' and the star map enter the popular imagination with the Hills and reappear in thousands of subsequent accounts. That centrality is precisely what forces caution: once a case fixes a narrative mold, it becomes hard to distinguish memory from cultural borrowing in everything that follows, and the founding case itself is caught in the question of whether it describes something real or inaugurates a way of imagining it.
Its inclusion in the corpus is justified by the combination of three elements uncommon for the era: (a) an official radar correlation logged in Project Blue Book —imperfect and disputed, but documented—; (b) formal psychiatric treatment by a doctor with full credentials, with preserved clinical transcripts that are an unusually rich primary source; and (c) an explicit professional opinion from that same source —Dr. Simon— that the memories were fantasies, not real events. The third point is decisive for calibration: the clinician who generated the material concluded against its literal reading, so editorial honesty requires that his verdict weigh in favor of non-NHI hypotheses, not against them. The case enters the corpus not as proof of extraterrestrial capture but as the best-attested document of how the abduction narrative is born —and how it must be scrutinized.

This case is classified among the model's hypotheses: the bar splits 100% by how much each explanation weighs (the uncertainty is spread across the hypotheses the case supports). Summed across the corpus they produce the comparable partition. It is a different question from the Probability above: that one estimates how likely the case is a genuinely unexplained phenomenon; this one splits which the explanation would be.
