On January 27, 1994, Captain Edward Rhodes and two co-pilots of a Tajik Air Boeing 747 reported, at 41,000 feet over Kazakhstan, a luminous object that overtook them at greater speed and altitude and maneuvered for over 40 minutes in circles, corkscrews and 90° turns. The episode was documented in a U.S. State Department cable and appears among the declassified PURSUE files (2026).

Limited evidence: single-witness, local or without primary verification. Three independent axes: the «tier» measures the strength of the evidence; the «probability» estimates how genuinely unexplained the case is —a natural phenomenon can remain unexplained, so it does not equal «non-prosaic»—; and the partition of explanations (below) says what it most plausibly was. So a well-documented case can have a possible hoax as its most plausible cause, and a Tier B is not, for that reason, a hoax.

Tajik Air Pilots Report Unidentified Flying Object

On January 27, 1994, during a Tajik Air flight on a Boeing 747SP, the crew —chief pilot Edward (Ed) Rhodes, a U.S. citizen, and two colleagues also U.S. pilots— observed at 41,000 feet over Kazakhstan an intensely luminous object approaching from the east at high speed and at an altitude far above the aircraft. According to the report, the position was given around 45° north latitude and 55° east longitude. The object was tracked visually by the crew for about 40 minutes, describing circular, corkscrew and sharp 90-degree trajectories.

What matters is not only the testimony of three professional crew members but its documentary trail, which can now be specified. The sighting was recorded in a cable from the U.S. embassy in Dushanbe (Tajikistan), dated January 31, 1994, and titled 'Tajik Air Pilots Report Unidentified Flying Object'; the document carries a State Department 'Released in Full' stamp dated February 25, 2026, and resurfaced publicly in the PURSUE declassification wave (war.gov/ufo, 2026). The cable itself notes that Rhodes took several photographs with a pocket Olympus compact camera and said he would send copies to the embassy and to the State Department's Tajikistan desk if they came out; no photographs, however, accompany the released cable, so the visual part of the report remains without material corroboration.

The framing is honest: it is a strong case both testimonially (three professional pilots, long duration, anomalous maneuvers) and documentarily (a dated, titled embassy cable + PURSUE declassification), but without radar, independent sensor or the mentioned photographs to corroborate it in the available material. What is preserved is the diplomatic transcription of a pilots' report, not an instrumental measurement.

Parte 02Part 02

It anchors Kazakhstan in the corpus with a case combining two strengths: multiple professional crew with ~40 minutes of observation, and a verifiable official documentary chain (U.S. embassy Dushanbe cable, Jan 31, 1994 → PURSUE 2026 declassification). It connects Central Asian airspace with the U.S. disclosure thread, showing that material released by the U.S. includes encounters that occurred far from its territory.

The case illustrates a virtue and a limit of the diplomatic record at once. The virtue: that three foreign professional pilots went to a U.S. embassy and that the State Department drafted, dated and kept the report for three decades gives the episode an institutional traceability unusual for a sighting from the region. The limit: the cable faithfully conveys what the pilots said, not what an instrument measured, and the photographs that might have elevated the case never appeared in the file. A prolonged visual observation at high altitude also admits conventional explanations —a bright planet or star whose apparent motion induces an illusion of maneuvering (autokinesis), reflections, other air traffic or re-entries— that the available material cannot rule out. That is why the case is testimonially strong and documentarily solid yet stays at mid-tier: exemplary chain of custody, physical corroboration absent. The detail of the promised photographs that never reached the file is, in itself, a calibrating datum: it marks the exact point where a good testimony could have become material evidence and did not, reminding us that the documentary solidity of a report does not equal the physical solidity of the phenomenon reported. In short, Tajik Air is one of the better-documented aviation testimonies in the corpus, with named professional witnesses, a precise location, a dated diplomatic cable and a clean release trail, yet it tops out at mid-tier because the chain delivers a credible account rather than a measurement.

Distribución de explicacionesDistribution of explanations

This case is classified among the model's hypotheses: the bar splits 100% by how much each explanation weighs (the uncertainty is spread across the hypotheses the case supports). Summed across the corpus they produce the comparable partition. It is a different question from the Probability above: that one estimates how likely the case is a genuinely unexplained phenomenon; this one splits which the explanation would be.
