Aarno Heinonen
Logger and competitive skier, southern Finland · one of the two witnesses in the Imjärvi encounter (1970)
Biography
He was skiing with a companion through a snowy forest when both stopped in a clearing at the sound of a hum: they described an object some three meters across wrapped in reddish mist, from which an intense beam of light descended with a small figure inside it, thin-limbed, waxy-faced and hook-nosed. What gives the case weight is the witnesses: two competitive athletes, sober and with no interest in notoriety, whose accounts matched. Heinonen later reported persistent physical effects, the element that has generated the most debate about the case.
