At RAF Cosford a guard saw lights over the base; at RAF Shawbury a meteorological officer described a large object sweeping the field with a beam of light at low speed before accelerating away at high speed. Nick Pope, of the MoD 'UFO desk', investigated and rated it of 'considerable defence significance'. Much of the wave coincides with the re-entry of a Russian rocket booster that night; the close-range Shawbury sighting remained the disputed residue.
