The night in question
On March 5, 2004, a twin-engine Merlin C26A aircraft of the Mexican Air Force's 501st air squadron was on a routine anti-drug surveillance flight near Ciudad del Carmen, in the state of Campeche, over the gulf. The aircraft carried two sensors of interest: a FLIR StarSAFIRE II infrared imaging system, used to detect the heat of clandestine boats or planes, and an APS-143 radar. As the sensor operator swept the area, the infrared began registering heat sources that matched no identified traffic. At the peak of the sequence, the FLIR showed as many as eleven luminous objects —hot spots— that seemed to move and, by the crew's reading, position themselves around the aircraft. What baffled the pilots was that most of those objects did not appear on radar: initially the radar detected one, while the infrared saw many. The crew reported the situation and kept recording several minutes of the thermal sequence.
The episode took on national scale through the institutional route. In April 2004, journalist and TV producer Jaime Maussan received a call from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and met with General Clemente Vega García, Secretary of Defense, and his staff, who handed him the infrared video for release. Maussan presented it publicly in May 2004, and the fact that the material came officially from the armed forces —not from an amateur— gave it unusual weight: it was, eight months before the famous Nimitz Tic Tac incident, a case of military sensor data handed over by the state itself.
The strongest prosaic explanation came soon and is robust. Several investigators —among them analyst and captain Alejandro Franz and skeptic Robert Sheaffer— concluded the 'objects' were flares from the oil platforms of the Cantarell complex, Mexico's largest field, located about 80 kilometers offshore in the same Bay of Campeche. Those towers burn excess gas with flames that can exceed 30 meters in height, whose thermal signature is visible to an infrared sensor several kilometers away. The apparent 'chase' or 'encirclement' of the aircraft would be a parallax effect: as the aircraft moves, fixed sources on the horizon seem to shift relative to one another in the sensor's two-dimensional image, with no depth. That the radar did not detect them is consistent with surface heat sources rather than solid objects in flight. The flares hypothesis is not universally accepted —part of the crew described motions it considers incompatible with fixed sources— but it economically explains the thermal signature, the radar absence and the apparent geometry. The case stood as what it is: an official military sensor record, with a strong though not unanimous mundane reading.

Why this case moved the needle
It matters because it is one of the few cases in the corpus where a state hands over military sensor data of its own accord and puts it into public circulation —an unusual act of transparency that, paradoxically, ended up favoring a prosaic explanation. Its pedigree is first-rate: military aircraft, calibrated sensor (FLIR StarSAFIRE II), institutional chain of custody, release by the Secretary of Defense himself. That places it in Tier A for evidence quality, entirely independent of what the lights were. And it is a notable chronological precedent: it happened in March 2004, months before the Nimitz incident, and prefigured the pattern that would dominate the following decade —military infrared images of 'objects' the sensor sees but the radar does not.
Its second lesson is the most valuable for the corpus's method: it shows that military sensor data, by itself, resolves nothing. Campeche is the perfect counterexample to the idea that 'if a military FLIR recorded it, it must be real and anomalous'. The Cantarell flares hypothesis —fixed heat sources on oil platforms, seen in a depthless image— economically explains the thermal signature, the radar absence and the apparent motion through parallax, and is the most probable reading. It is not certain: part of the crew insists on motions incompatible with fixed sources, and without the full telemetry the closure is not definitive. But the weight falls on the prosaic. For a catalogue that separates the strength of the evidence from the nature of the object, Campeche is a Tier A whose object was probably mundane: impeccable institutional evidence about a phenomenon that technical analysis explains without anything exotic —exactly the kind of case an honest corpus must record with its strongest explanation in view, not hide.
