El Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (SENASA) realizó necropsias y un estudio de campo. Su conclusión oficial fue que no había nada anómalo: los cuerpos mostraban una secuencia normal de muerte (por diversas causas) seguida de carroñeo por fauna. El informe señaló a depredadores y carroñeros —y, de forma célebre, al 'ratón hocicudo rojizo' (una comadrejita)— como responsables de los cortes 'quirúrgicos', que en realidad son el resultado de animales que comen primero los tejidos blandos, dejando bordes que la putrefacción y la deshidratación vuelven netos.

From April 2002, in central Argentine provinces (La Pampa, Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Córdoba, among others), hundreds of dead cows appeared with a striking pattern: clean, precise-looking cuts, a notable absence of blood, and missing soft tissues —eyes, tongue, ears, anus, genitals—. The phenomenon, matching the international 'cattle mutilation' pattern, caused public alarm and was quickly linked to UFOs; some residents also reported strange lights in the affected areas.
The National Service of Agri-Food Health and Quality (SENASA) carried out necropsies and a field study. Its official conclusion was that there was nothing anomalous: the carcasses showed a normal sequence of death (from various causes) followed by scavenging by wildlife. The report pointed to predators and scavengers —and, famously, to the 'red mouse opossum' (a small marsupial)— as responsible for the 'surgical' cuts, which are actually the result of animals eating the soft tissues first, leaving edges that putrefaction and dehydration make clean.
